The best wines for summer drinking

We've rounded up the best supermarket white, reds and sparkling rose wines for bank holiday barbecues and beyond

We've tested refreshing white wines, summer reds and sparkling roses from a range of supermarkets to find the best wines for your bank holiday barbecue.

We asked leading wine experts to blind taste nine whites, nine reds and eight sparkling pinks.

We found great value, great tasting wines in each category, proving you don't have to splash out for a Best Buy bottle.

The best sparkling rose

Something to celebrate this summer? Kick things off with a bottle of sparkling rose wine.

Our experts particularly loved the floral and fruity hints of the Co-op Irresistible Sparkling Rose (£8) and also enjoyed M&S Graham Beck The Rhona Brut Rose (£10), which reminded one panellist of champagne.

Head to our list of the best sparkling roses to see which other supermarket fizz is worth a punt. Alternatively, go to our best Proseccos and sparkling wine if you're after some white Best Buy bubbly.

The best white wine

In a shortlist of mostly Italian whites, we were pleasantly surprised to find a Portuguese and Austrian wine nabbing the top spots.

Both our Best Buy white wines offer something a little out of the ordinary that's sure to impress your guests at your bank holiday barbecue.

Aldi's The Wine Foundry Avesso (£6.49) is a refreshing wine with fruity hints of lime, whereas Morrisons The Best Gru00fcner Veltliner (£8.25) has more subtle flavours of grapefruit and white jasmine.

The best red wine for summer 2019

Our best red wines are light enough to drink in the hot summer sun but with enough body and flavour to hold their own against rich chargrilled flavours - the perfect partner for your bank holiday barbecue.

And even if our Best Buys don't take your fancy, with a range of grapes from six different countries you're bound to find a wine that suits your personal taste.
