Visit Christchurch on the 5th year anniversary of the earthquake. Right next to Cathedral Square and on the tram route you will find this strange looking outdoor mall. It is made completely of containers, painted up, set atop each other and given a new life. That's a fantastic way showing the spirits to build a new future and keep going! What a great idea to have found a way to keep life going and to create new beginnings from where everything was destroyed. A touching stament to a city trying to get back on it's feet. Inspiring to a see projects such as this Re-Start Mall. You will see a whole bunch of brightly colored shipping containers congregated together acting as stores. put in all the service one needed: SMART ATMS for cash deposits, bank, food stands, cafes, clothing, shoe - at the end a mini mall.
Take your time to walk around, look at the shops and the nice art pieces on display, definitely worth a walk.

A vibrant eclectic mix of art, enthusiasm, and care, healing the heartache that losing a city centre brought.

Rekindling the city retail hub.
Its all here
Coffee..most important and money!
Cash points to withdraw from and plenty to tempt you to spend on.

Enjoy😀
Visit and be inspired, it is still vital life support, whilst the healing continues.
The art alone is
Caring and sharing

We had been given advice by several people not to bother with Christchurch, the common misconception being that there was nothing to see post-earthquake. Nothing could be further from the truth. Re:Start alone, a maze of containers converted to shops and cafes, is only a small part of what central Christchurch has to offer. Ballantyne's, a very attractive department store, remains in business at one end of the mall. Then, in the middle, there is Quake City (with a modest entrance fee) which gives the visitor a very thorough and graphic picture of the causes and the aftermath of the earthquake. The most compelling part (which can bring you to tears) is the film of the individuals telling their stories of their experience and survival through the earthquake. There are more lighthearted bits as well showing the resilience and the humour of Christchurch residents. Within easy walking distance of Re:Start you can find the Avon, with punting, on the edge of the magnificent Botanic Gardens, which were left largely untouched by the earthquake; the trolley tour with explanations of what buildings remain and what still have to come down because of massive internal structural damage; and the Cardboard Cathedral, the new home of Christchurch Cathedral while the debate continues to rage about whether the heavily damaged stone cathedral should be restored or demolished. All in all, a day very well spent!

This small container city is a cool idea to bring life back to the city. Great food variety. Small beergarden and some nice shops.

The Re:start project gives colour, hope and joy in the reconstructive City of Christchurch. It is the perfect place to get a cup of coffee or go shoping for some while. Although that the re:start project is said to be limited and will be removed in the near future, I sincerely hope that it will remain.

Lots of food outlets from sit down menus to fast foods.

Lots of specialist shops in containers but flashed up.

Popped up after the Christchurch earthquake of 2011.

Worth a look.

Take a day pass on the city tour tram and you can hop on and off at any one of the 17 stops.

One of the stops is right there - number 3.

To have a segment of the city being cordoned off due to maintenance work that takes a very long time, this temporary shopping place seems to be a good place to visit for the locals.

A unique concept that encompass several f&b combined with retail, it was quite enough to satisfy most. Worth a visit and take a look as the shops really work hard to bring something new all the time. Food is great but a little expensive. Depends on what you're looking for.

We wanted to understand the alarming damage suffered by the Business district and were thrilled to discover such a vibrant spirit as retails and small restaurants against difficult conditions have reestablished themselves in containers. Go and experience good shopping a delicious food to support these people.
