Cons: it has 2 USB C ports for charging, but they're right next to each other. It would be much better if there one on each side so you could plug in the cord wherever it's easier that session. There is nothing to keep he pen with the computer (Lenovo has models where it goes inside the computer and even charges while "docked" and the Microsoft Surface Book holds the pen to the side with a magnet). The weight feels heavier than I expected based on the specs. I think anything over 3 lbs sees like too much these days.
Personally, I don't like the 16:9 aspect ratio and wish they went with 3:2 like the Surface Book, but that's personal preference and in the specs, so I can't really hold that against the Spectre. For the price and other strengths of the x360, I'll settle for the poor aspect ratio.
The laptop is snappy and responsive, haven't run into any lags or chops, but video and Google street view do need longer to buffer and load because of the 4k resolution. The screen is gorgeous and one big and welcome advantage is that it has a large viewing angle vertically (as well as horizontally). Most laptops need you to look at them dead-straight on, but I can tilt the screen on this one without change in brightness or colors. The glare on its fully glossy screen, however, prevents you from using it with anything bright behind you. Screen brightness is very good, though, brighter than needed indoors, good for lighter (but shaded) outdoors.
This being a touch screen causes programs to launch, others to exit and weird effects on web pages when you pick the laptop up on its screen (without actually touching the screen portion, just the rim), because the flexing is interpreted as a click on whatever is near the touch. Could be stiffer than it is.
The keyboard is spacious, but the arrow and pgup/pgdn/home/end arrangement really needs getting used to, they are just not in a convenient place. I keep hitting the CTRL key for left arrow etc, because there is no space between the two. And the up/dwn keys are simply too small. The function keys are configured incorrectly to only access the special keys (volume, screen brightness etc), which simply doesn't work for someone used to using F1 to F12. That, however, was an easy fix in the BIOS.
The touchpad is very large, which is good. Although it has lots of options for easier clicks, the single click (push down where you are) needs too much pressure, which strains the wrist. And the single tab as click often moves the cursor instead of staying put, that does not work well.
Tablet mode is iffy at best, but that is more of a Windoze 10 problem, not a laptop problem. If used in vertical mode, everything resizes to that width, but doesn't size back when moving to horizontal mode. Very annoying. More importantly, getting it to work intuitively is a nightmare, but again, that is a Microsoft issue, the laptop handles it well from a hardware perspective.
One note to everyone who isn't familiar with 4k screens: whereas the resolution is fantastic, images that were exported for other screens now appear very small. They did a good job adjusting icon and text size to appear normal, but many other things and websites or older software controls (like Window media player!) are now too small. I also wish there was a function to only turn off the keyboard, but otherwise keep functioning as a laptop when I fold it over and have it angled on my lap to use with touch.
Another thing that cause aggravation is the crapware that HP loads with the laptop. Everyone does it, I know, but it still is useless shit that doesn't serve any other purpose than spying on you and inundating you with ads and more offers. And 3 month trialware also just needlessly requires to be uninstalled (McAffee antivirus).
I wish the keyboard backlight would autoturn off when not used to save battery, but it is either full on or full off, no other option.
And, of course, the laptop is heavy. At 4.4 pounds, the 15 inch screen comes at a weight cost. Whereas the left and right has a minimal 1/4" bezel, there is a good inch and a half of space on top and bottom that is unnecessary and which could have made that laptop as much smaller and lighter if better designed.
Oh, and the touchpen that came with it stopped working after a day! it also uses very uncommon AAAA batteries.
All in all, a good solution for editing photos, for which I got it, but it is large, heavy and needs getting used to it.
1) Speakers buzz when headphones are plugged in, or sometimes they buzz just for fun. You know, the kind of buzzing where you can hear the electronics inside buzz and whir and it sounds like an old 56k modem.
2) Screen is not bright enough to sit outside. The touchscreen had inaccurate touches and the pen would go wild -- they released a fix for it and it settled down -- for 2 months -- it is now sliding back to its previous, malfunctioning state.
3) Processor was OK -- then the spectre/meltdown fixes slowed it down beneath "OK" and I regret not getting AMD now. I thought a new 8th gen i7 would perform incredibly well, but its turning out to be mediocre.
4) The "NVME" drive is an odd Toshiba variety that (like everything else on this craptop) doesn't quite cut the price tag of $1,700! (Again, rounding up... because it's seventeen hundred frickin' dollars).
5) Keyboard? Sucks. Spacebar became sticky and depending on the temperature of my room or the outside, it becomes unusuable.
6) The BIOS? LAUGHABLE. You can configure maybe 5 things, but you can't even choose whether you want hyperthreading on or off (granted, I'm assuming that is an option on other i7-8550u boards).
7) There are many other smaller things that piss me off about this laptop, but I'll skip them because writing this review is filling me with more dread and regret than is worth 1,700 frickin' dollars. I received this laptop in January 2018... I had sat and researched and planned on buying myself a new laptop for about 2 months. I had an old HP 8440p, small, durable, and at that point was chuggin' along its 8th year. I LOVED that HP. I figured that my new laptop should be an HP with the best and newest processor! So I bought this Spectre. It's pretty! It's shiny! The girls walk up and say "Wow what a pretty computer!" But man, I wanted performance and stability. Its looks were a mere consequence to THAT promise. Well... Here I am in July, 6 months later, a very angry man. Because now the TOUCHPAD HAS STOPPED WORKING. I CAN'T USE THE MOUSE! I'm not one to type in all caps, trust me, it has been a long long time since I've typed more than 1 word in all caps. (At least I hope so...) but... F&*@^!!!!!!!!!! Thankfully I have USB mice laying around (that fill up the 1 non-C USB on this thing).
8) Oh, and one more thing, one of the most important! (How could I forget?) This laptop runs hot ALL THE TIME. I dusted out all the vents several times and it's just hot all the time. Here's the problem --> When your CPU runs hot, your system "throttles" the CPU (meaning, it turns down its speed) so that the processor cools down a bit. So.. if this hunk of crap is running hot 24/7, that means your system is tuning your processor down 24/7... Meaning --> You (and I) never get to see 4.0ghz. So... because of the TERRIBLE DESIGN of this PACKARD CRAP the people who pay $1,700 can NOT experience the full potential of what might otherwise be good hardware. So... so.. mad.... Argh.
So... I'm in the market for another laptop now. Not an HP unless its some ugly business model, and not an Intel unless it has 6 cores or more. I jumped and giggled like a little child when I received my spectre, but now... I am filled with pure HATRED.
P.S. I've used this laptop on Windows 10 when I received it, but.. the processor/NVME were beginning to disappoint me, so I moved to my usual home -- Linux land! So, just so y'all know -- I used this laptop under Windows, various Linux distro's (ranging from Ubuntu to Arch to source-based Gentoo and Sabayon), and even BSD. The problems I speak of persisted throughout ALL of these systems. Thus, I believe it is the hardware and not merely some driver issue or poor configuration. I should mention, however, as usual, this laptop was faster with a linux system :)
