REUBEN AND THE DARK IN CONCERT:
Reuben and the Dark are spirited folk-rock outfit who recently released a new album, Arms of a Dream, out now on Arts & Crafts. The record finds songwriter/vocalist Reuben Bullock working outside his comfort zone, both musically and lyrically. The result is Bullock's most vivid and transformative music to date: an intimate exploration of the inversion of imagination and reality in dreams.

I cannot believe this band does not sell out bigger venues, but this was a bonus for the audience, as the Azrieli theatre at the NAC is a comfortable and intimate setting, with no bad seats. Why oh why can’t Ottawa book more acts as good as this one in this venue?! An added bonus and very pleasant surprise was the one-man opening performance by Faux Prix (ex of the band Black English), who also has a wonderful voice and original material. Special props also to the large group of indigenous drummers/singers from Matewan, Quebec, who were brought out near the end of the concert to provide some amazing backup for a few of the band’s songs, as well as perform one of their own.
