Sep 2013 • Solo
I hiked this solo September 17, 2013. It is a mile one way with a 700 foot elevation gain. First, I have to say this was a big day for hiking. I had already done Virginia and St. Mary and Barring Falls earlier in the morning. Now it was 2:30 p.m. in the afternoon and overcast but I really wanted to do this hike so I went on. The parking lot is tiny – maybe 10 cars – and hardly any signage. It was nippy starting out so I wore a long sleeve with my fleece jacket. This combination is great for this time of year in Glacier. I had a lightweight rain jacket in my daypack.

The trail starts out open but quickly enters into a wooded section. This provided much against wind and sun (yes it came out – the weather changes quickly here). I eventually took my jacket off because the middle layer of air was very warm. I mention this middle layer a lot in my reviews because this happens all over the park. It will start out cold then get warm then gets cold again at the top. The path is narrow and very rocky. You need to be sure of foot on this path. Coming down was worse in my opinion as I slid and almost fell twice. Going up is just a little grueling but I mentioned my previous hikes for a reason. I could have been more tired than I thought . It took me 50 minutes to reach the top. There is not much scenery on the way up as you are enclosed by trees. Bears frequent this area a lot and I saw scat in a couple of places but to be honest it could have another animals. It had berries in it and was a lot so I assumed it could have been bear. Also, Many Glacier Hotel is just down the road and every day the two days I stayed there I saw both black and grizzly grazing on the side of the mountain just down from the Appikuny parking lot.

Let’s talk about the end of the trail. You can see well in advance when you are approaching the falls as I got some really great pictures through the trees. When you exit out of the trees, there is a big rocky wall area and that is where the path gets interesting. You have to turn left and go down. You cross a small stream or at least small in the fall as spring could post a bit more of a challenge. Then, UP and when I say UP I mean using your hands to climb up. I had rock climbing in college and had not used those skills again until now. Now, there is no scaling a rock wall but I had to grab several rocks as did the people in front of me to go up the trail. It is not too far to climb like this. Coming down the trail I sat on my butt and slid down a few places. It was just safer.

The falls is really high and still quite nice even in the fall. I bet spring time would be incredible. There is a flat area which would be great for snacking or resting right in front of the falls. It took 40 minutes coming down the trail – as I said - very rocky. I might do this one again, but if I did it would be with trekking poles and in the spring. Obviously being a mostly shaded hike, this makes for a great hike in hot weather. The scenery is nice from the top but not as grand as some others in the park.

I don’t consider this a family hike. There are too many bears and it is a grueling hike. I came across some younger adults and we talked and they even said how hard they thought it was. Then there is the rocky area at the end to climb (or fall down).

OK not really but be prepared for a trail where the elevation increases rapidly. It can be tiring if not in good shape--my age begins to challenge me more each year--but boy is the payoff worth it once one reaches the falls which may be the most beautiful of all the ones in the park!

It's only a mile, but it's a mile uphill the whole way. We had already hiked about 10 miles before we hit this trail. We figured it would be an easy 1 mile hike to some falls. The falls were pretty, but the hike was kind of rough on the way up. We had to take a lot of breaks during that one mile trek. Coming down was easy!

I hiked this solo on September 26, 2018. Didn’t have a lot of time and it had been on my list for a while. As others have said, steady uphill almost the whole way but not ridiculously so. Poles would help many. It was windy, which is not unusual for the area. I climbed all the way to the end, right to the bottom of the falls. Amazing how close you can get to them without actually getting wet! You wouldn’t call this a flashy hike, but it’s my kind of hike: not too long, not too short, not too hard, not too easy.

I don’t know why, but I seem to meet the nicest people whenever I’m in Glacier. It wasn’t too crowded today, but to those reading: if you’re the family with two young kids who stopped to eat near the end (at mid afternoon) while I climbed all the way up to the falls and then offered me a huckleberry licorice out of the blue when I came back down, thank you again! It was a simple yet unexpectedly kind gesture that, to be honest, will long remain in my memory. I don’t know if there’s much chance you’ll see this, but if you do, please post back. I wish I’d asked you where you were from. Happy hiking!

Another short hike ending in nice waterfall. Fair amount of gain over a short time. Trekking poles were nice to have. Saw few chipmunks, a wiley grouse, no four legged creatures. Shaded mostly. Small parking lot, maybe 10-12 spots.

This is a short but 100% uphill walk to this waterfall. Well worth the effort. Very beautiful spot in a spectacular, somewhat out of the way part of Glacier National Park. If you go in June, take your insect repellent. The black flies were out and looking for blood!!

Before you get your hiking legs back Apikuni Falls is a must to.

Lots of bang for the buck at the falls proper for this warmup short starter.

The hike 1st park of the hike is a rather boring walk through the woods and gets increasingly steeper as you approach the falls.

Don't let this deter you as the Falls are spectacular. In 2017 we were treated to several very active American Dippers (formerly Water Ouzel) feeding. These small birds make their living by swimming underwater in clear free running streams such as the one below Apikuni Falls. See my included photos.

Half way up I wasn't sure if I would continue, but I'm glad I did, it was beautiful all the way! Saw a huge snowshoe rabbit, never saw one before. The walk starts out in a wildflower meadow, once you get to the trees it goes up. It's hard but I'm a 57 year old out of shape woman so don't worry you won't make it.

This was a short hike up but it’s steep. There weren’t that many hikers on this trail. You can climb to the actual falls. The water is extremely cold, but you can go in. It’s quite refreshing.
