Compact size works great
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is my fourth Canon printer since about 2009, all of them still work well. They perform with Mac and Windows equally and printing off an iPhone while attached to a PC is seamless. No settings adjustments os hiccups. I haven’t tried printing from a droid yet. Side note: The 1st Canon I got was free with a computer purchase. I told the salesman to keep it. I had a “better” printer and didn’t need the clutter. He insisted so I put it in a work shop and ended up using it more than the “better” one at home.

Love the print quality and the style
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Very clear printing and looks sharp sitting on my desk. Also like the way it prints on printable DVDs & CDs, since we produce a lot of "home movies" that I burn to DVD. Canon has always made great products, and this printer is no exception.

Just can't stay connected to our network
||Posted . Owned for 4 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Something about Canon printers they just for the life of them can't stay connected to any network which is a pain in the you know what. So sort of defeats the point of a wifi network printer unless you like struggling ever time you go to print one page for hours to get it to print. One job to do and it just can't do it. Going to recycle this printer tomorrow it's not worth the frustration.

Great value on sale
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. At standard retail price I likely would skip this but it was at a third of retail out the door. I heavily studied reviews for a quality photo printer that could print work documents also. I wanted decent ink prices but I have used 3rd party ink with great results in past. I didn’t care by what means I could get the ink prices down. Photo quality, borderless printing, and ability for multiple paper sizes were required. I struggled with max size but I’ve had a tabloid size photo printer before and never printed over an 8x10. I only cared about printing - not scanning etc. Paper tray feeding for 4x6 was a plus. Ink tanks are what I researched first but I couldn’t make sense of it since refilling a cartridge isn’t scary to me. The convenience would be great but the nearest comparable canon ink tank would be about ten times the price. For that price difference I can buy about 6 ink refill kits. Also, the quality of photos take a hit although there are likely some soon to hit market that will be at same level. The price sounds crazy high though. Epson prices are a bit lower but the last $300 Epson lasted about 18 months before the heads started clogging. Time will tell, but canons have a better reputation for hardware longevity. Oddly enough, this printer has lower print resolution against comparable Inkjets but higher ratings for photo output quality. It’s cost per page is average to higher than average at pricepoint but with the sale it’ll be much better upfront. Canons ink cartridges have chips that present errors of refilled but the error is easily removed so refilling with 3rd party is easy without a chip resetter. It does lose the ability to track cartridge ink levels once the error is bypassed. I’m completely fine with that since this scores near highest picture print quality for the tier printer it is. Brother reviews show a step behind the pack. In comparisons, canon photos are not as water resistant as Epson ink on Epson paper. I am not testing that, but reviews online have shown that on other models. Personally I don’t get why that matters - I’ll print a new photo if one gets wet. For low volume printing this makes sense in every aspect. If it dies in a year, I’ll be extremely happy it was so cheap - a big concern with ink tanks since I’ve not had great longevity thus far. If 3rd party ink is an option and letter size max is okay, I could find no better options for anywhere close to the price.

Decent printer but not Canon's best
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. After a number of reliable years of service a Canon MG5220 A-I-O we owned failed on boot. The TS8220 was Canon's recommended replacement. Sadly, no current Canon printer uses the same ink as the 5220, so our remaining ink stock was wasted. I might have been more accepting of this had the TS8220 even used the same number of ink tanks, but it requires even one more than our earlier model. Since Canon printers charge all ink tanks at once, including color ones even when you are printing entirely in black, this just increases the waste required to keep the printer in service. Apart from the operational expense, this printer was not terribly expensive for the feature set. It will handle most of the tasks we used our previous printer for (except for transferring scanned images directly to a USB thumb drive, since this printer lacks a USB port for this purpose). It does offer one additional feature the 5220 lacked, namely Air Print for printing wirelessly from our Apple devices. Air Print does work, but the quality is not always as might be expected, with some differences observed between the image on screen, and the image on paper. Build quality is admittedly a bit disappointing in light of the more robust quality of our previous Canon. The paper tray was reduced in capacity by one-third, and has a separate rather thin and flimsy cover that must be removed to properly seat the paper, and can sometimes be difficult to replace. This design change alone, while only slightly annoying, will be an ongoing source of frustration because the 5220's paper tray had no such add-on cover, was more sturdy, and did not require refilling nearly as often as the 8220 will. Otherwise, the technology is somewhat improved, with a slightly larger color LCD display that also features touch screen capability, something lacking on the 5220. Of course, this eliminates the need for function buttons, so the screen is your control panel. There is a power On/Off button, and a glaring white LED (far too bright for its purpose and location) power status light. A darker color and dimmer LED would have been more suitable, and I find myself turning the printer on and off with each use, just to avoid the glare of the LED. On power off, the display will ask if you wish the printer to automatically retract the paper output tray, and the proper response will result in a bit of saved space in front of the printer, and a more streamlined overall appearance when the printer is not in use, but that space will again be needed for the next print job, at which time the output tray will automatically extend. On the default Standard print quality setting, the 8220 is somewhat faster than the equivalent setting on our previous model, but also suffers from light line banding in areas with wide ink coverage, a problem the 5220 was able to avoid. On high quality, this issue is resolved on the 8220, but the speed is greatly reduced, and my impression is that it may even be a bit slower than the 5220. This printer will make a competent addition to a home setup, or even perhaps to a small home office, but for higher print demands, especially where quality is a factor, you might be better served by a more capable system. All things considered, this is an average printer, competent, with decent features at a reasonable price, but with lower than expected build quality and higher than expected printing costs.

Q: QuestionWhat is typical print cartridge life and replacement costs?
Asked by CautiousBuyer.
- A:Answer It depends on what you are printing and how much you are printing. If your documents are B&W then your black cartridge will run out first. If you do color documents then depending on color selection, those cartridges will run out. If you are printing color photos, you will use up ink more quickly. The cost for replacement cartridges are $70+ for a full set. They do sell the cartridges separately in groups also.
