- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 18 February 2009This volume has been in print now for a number of years and the recipes still feel fresh and challenging as well. It is not a book designed for those who don't already have some basic cooking skill - it is not a 'method' cookbook so if you need to know how to reduce a sauce properly etc then I should get something else to accompany this one e.g.Mastering the Art of French Cooking: Vol 1 for example. However, the recipes in themselves are largely uncomplicated with a focus on the very best of ingredients. There are a wide variety of vegetarian recipes such as Ribollita and Ricotta al forno (a wonderful green souffle), as well as a number of more unusual meat dishes too. Particularly good was the fascinating Pork Roasted with Balsamic Vinegar - one would expect this to be far too acidic and sharp, but with slow cooking, the meat (which is grilled first) is complimented by a rich thick treacle-like goo, not too sweet and with only a hint of acidity - an excellent dish especially for a large group as you can simply leave it to cook. Their game dishes are also very good and the timings of most recipes are pretty accurate for the average household oven. If you want to impress your friends and yourself with fabulous Italian dishes, then this is the book for you.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 24 May 2022I bought this on offer as an ebook for 99p and it’s a snip, I prefer hard copy for cookery books, but I’m using an old iPad mini as a reader for cookery books. With the kindle App, I can download the book and browse in much the same way as a hard copy. The colour photos come out really well and the hperlinjs make it easy to navigate from one part to another. It works on a kindle too, but is quite dull.
As expected, it’s packed with inventive recipes, Italian themed and each recipe has a little background about it. There are no weird ingredients and it’s set out well with clear list of ingredients, then preparation instructions. Most dishes have a colour photo showing the end plate. It’s inventive and makes cooking pasta dishes a real joy. Loads of inspiration and a valuable addition to my collection.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 12 September 2013Real Italian food - I know a lot of cookbooks claim that but I genuinely believe in this case.
Brilliant recipes that are so easy and simple but deliver great results.
I've seen these two girls on the telly and you know they know what they're talking about. SO passionate.
So sad one of them died early. Makes the book more important I think.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 September 2023Amazing to see how far British food has come since this book was written. Revolutionary at the time but maybe less inspirational and inspiring today.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 27 May 2021I bought this book described as in ' very good condition by seller, as I collect cook books. It came in poor to good condition, with outer pages filthy with god knows what ( some food from previous owner?) Great little book with great recipes but condition exaggerated.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 1 November 2018An absolute classic, must-have for any home cook.

4.0 out of 5 stars Comida italiana tradicional

5.0 out of 5 stars You can understand why Jamie Oliver is the fantastic cook he's become based on this book alone
You can understand why Jamie Oliver is the fantastic cook he's become based on this book alone.
Pros: tons of *great* never complicated recipes, carefully detailed instructions. The slow cooked sausage pasta is hands down the best pasta I've ever had.
Cons: no picture, which was all the fashion back then, but I don't like it. I tend to pick what I will make based on what it will look like, so it's a bit of a deterrent when it comes to this particular book.

5.0 out of 5 stars The River Cafe Cook Book
I was very pleased with the book. It was sent in secure packaging and the book is in very good condition, nearly like new. Different formatting of very uncomplicated recipes. Surprised me in their simplicity of prep and ingredients and therefore turn out to be rewarding in taste and reasonable time for prep.
