- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 25 February 2020This is a useful book for an undisciplined cook like me. Helpful substitutions for many recipes so you don't have to stick slavishly to a list of ingredients. No long drawn out prep or multiple processes. If I'm hungry I don't have time to follow an elaborate recipe, if I'm not hungry I'm not motivated to do so, so the 30 minutes give or take is just about right. Everything I have cooked from the book so far has turned out at the very least tasty, and at best quite impressive. I need to avoid wheat and other grains, so this is ideal for me.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 June 2021Love this book! It has:
- the right balance of mains / sides
- lots of variety
- fantastic tips for preventing food waste
- beautiful photography
- ingredients (and substitutes) that are all easy to find
Plus, as a vegetarian I love the fact most meat recipes have veggie alternatives. Can’t wait to cook more from this book and make my way onto Melissa’s new one ‘Eat Green’!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 14 February 2024I’m a huge fan of both the Hemsley sisters. This is the 4th book of theirs I own (I know this is Melissa only, but the basis of the recipes is similar) and my current go-to for pretty much all meals. Gluten-free, no refined carbs and super healthy (for me, on the Zoe personalised health app, all their stuff scores 80% or more).
One of the things I love most about this is that it offers lots of options/alternatives if you don’t have a particular ingredient to hand, which is think is both useful and confidence-inspiring for less experienced cooks.
What I absolutely hate about it is the index. If I look up, say, “mushrooms “, I don’t just want to know every page number they’re on. I want the name of the recipe too. Otherwise finding new recipes is just a faff.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 1 February 2018As a busy mum I have to say this is an amazing book, its easy to read, the recipes are simple to follow and taste fab.
Quick to cook especially after a long day and in between driving the kids to various activities but the best part is that its nutritious!
Its always tricky to balance dinners that are healthy that the kids will like and this book ticks every box.
Our kids really loved the fish options (getting them to eat fish is like pulling teeth usually).
Would thoroughly recommend.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 January 2018Delighted to try my first Melissa recipe yesterday - Fish en papillote ! - Delicious and so simple, with virtually no washing up !. However, I did make a couple of small mistakes. I used Haddock, which was quite chunky and bought parchment that was foil backed and I didn't seal it properly, so it took a little longer than 12 minutes to cook!. I love the little "Use it Up" notes and "Tips". Can't wait to try some more
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 27 August 2020Positives... I liked a lot of the recipes and there were some really nice photos to accompany them. The meat and sweet section had some lovely recipes and photos. I felt these sections made the book.
Negatives.... This is a personal preference but I felt a little disappointed that not all recipes had photos. At times there could be 4/5 recipes at a time with no photo to accompany them. The pictures of half eaten food were not that appealing to be honest. The drinks (especially the vodka & blackberry mint sparkler or Grapefruit & cucumber fizz) at the end would have been great with some nice pictures. At the end of the day the first thing we see is the visual pictures and if it looks yummy then you will want to make it! Also for me seeing the finished meal helps me to see what it is mean't to look like. Personally again, although the random plate pics at the start of each section were nice, I would have preferred pictures of the food instead if there was a picture limit. The cover I felt was dull, boring and slighlty old fashioned. I thought when looking through the book that it was a shame the first picture next to the contents page wasn't used for the cover instead as it was vibrant and fun. For me a book is also art and something you want to look at and display as well. I will still make a lot of the recipes and my picture views are my personal opinion, it depends what you are after at the end of the day. I do still like the book a lot, I just don't love it, which is a shame.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 5 August 2023I bought this book as a birthday gift. My daughter has a copy which she says is amazing and I didn't know what to buy her friend for her birthday and this was what she requested. The item and service were excellent. Ordered and arrived within 24 hours . Perfect condition and great value for money. Highly recommend. Many thanks x
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 24 May 2022Great selection of recipes although I'm only interested in the plant based ones. Have tried making a few of the vegan ones already and all have turned out well.
