Customers find the stencil cutting kit works well, cutting stencils like a hot knife on butter, particularly on lightweight plastic sheets, and appreciate its speed and value for money. However, the heat transfer and ease of use receive mixed feedback - while it heats quickly and makes the job easier, some customers report it becomes too hot and find it hard to control. Moreover, the edge quality and tip bending are problematic, with customers reporting uneven, burnt edges and missing curved tips.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 16, 2013I'm new to using the tool, but it's working successfully. Luckily I had a nice thick piece of glass on hand, about 12" by 18". This has a lot to do with good cuts because it's very hard, very flat, and also fairly cold, which means the plastic cools quickly after the hot tip cuts thru, so if you're moving the tip at a constant not-too-fast speed, it works well. There is a tendency for the melted plastic to stick to the glass, but a gentle tug releases it. You could also slide a single-edge razor under the plastic, if necessary, to release the bond. Right now I'm using these clear sheets: Grafix Clear Craft Plastic .007 Thickness 12-Inch by 12-Inch, Pack of 25, bought here at Amazon. Notice these are pretty good sized, there are other ones available about the size of printer paper. I have a drawing underneath the glass, so I can easily cut the design with the hot tool, following my own artwork.
The tool comes with two tips. One of them is cone shaped, and straight, and the other one is hooked. So far I have only used the straight one, and I hold it perpendicular to the plastic sheet, not on an angle. The instructions on the package say hold it like a pencil, but I suggest some experiments before you find out which way gives you the results you want. If you hold it on an angle, it will melt a slightly wider swath, and this may give you blobs and messy edges. Keep an X-Acto knife handy to make tiny cuts where the design isn't separating from the sheet due to the melted cut re-sealing. This happens rarely, in my experience.
The directions suggest using either a glass surface or anodized aluminum. Keep in mind that the glass allows a pattern to be traced, whereas you cannot see thru the aluminum. If you don't have a piece of glass, stop everything and go to the hardware store first, and buy this important item. If the edges are not ground, tape them so you don't get any cuts on your fingers. The piece I'm using I found at the dump -- in fact, a whole pile of them -- and it's about twice the thickness of window glass. Don't worry about the heat from the tip touching the glass, nothing bad will happen. Just don't rest the hot tool on the glass for extended periods of time, there is a little stand to set it on. The tool is very hot.
One reviewer said the tool is not suitable for professional artists. I guess it depends on what you're going to do with it. I'm cutting stencils for use in my artwork, and it suits my purposes quite well. The price is great, too. The only thing that didn't work out, kind of funny really, is it comes with a little plastic cap, totally bad idea, so throw that away immediately because if you don't, you'll forget about it when you plug the tool in, and it gets very hot, very fast, and will melt that cap into a black stinking mess in about two seconds. Trust me on this, throw it out.
There were a couple of different plastics for sale at Amazon, and I bought two of them. The one I mentioned up above, and another one that is medium weight with a matte finish. The reason I got the matte finish is that later on I may wish to draw on the plastic, as opposed to looking at a drawing that I've positioned under my piece of glass. For my work I needed some stiffness, and next purchase will probably be for the heavy-weight which (I assume) flexes less.
And finally, melting plastic stinks and may be a little toxic. Since your face is pretty close to the work you're doing, setting up a small fan with gentle breeze will blow the vapors away, which is a good idea, regardless of whether you're doing this in the house or out in the garage. It's something that you do sitting down, generally, because you need some control of your arms and hands.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 8, 2009I have used this product for over a week and have cut out over 30 stencils already. This product works like a charm. It takes about 5 minutes to warm up to maximum heat but after that it cuts through stencil sheet material like butter. It is as easy to use as a pen. Previously I used an exacto knife set and let me tell you this product far exceeds that archaic method. It comes with 2 different tips but I have only found use for the straight tip as I don't see how the curved tip will improve on its ability. For stencil material I use Grafix Dura Lar "Matte" stencil sheets sold in a pad of 25. I originally purchased a thickness of .005 but would recommend a thicker medium such as .007. Make sure to get the matte version as it can be drawn on with pencil without smearing and you can erase any mistakes without so much as a smudge left. Also be sure to purchase the sheets in a pad and not a roll because the pad sheets will always lay flat and not curl like most stencil mediums. I purchased the stencil sheets from Jerry's Altarama but there are alternative sites that sell it as well. This is the first time I have used an electric cutter and I am more than satisfied. I have viewed similar electronic cutters, including the 5 in 1 tool but the reviews on those products were not appealing. This product will not disappoint! Enjoy and happy stenciling.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 19, 2012I recently became interested in using stencils for my ceramic work, and purchased this as I did not want to spend laborious hours cutting out an image with an x-acto knife (very difficult for curves, mind you). I was very happy with this product for the price, the only drawback is the difficulty of finding the perfect pressure and speed to use, as to not melt the mylar or stencil film. Make sure to cut on a piece of wood as to not melt your working table! I was able to get 5 or 6 small sized stencils done within an hour. Speeds up the process!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 1, 2012When I first started making stencils out of plastic sheet, I used an exacto knife to cut them. It was slow, tedious work, not terribly accurate, and a little dangerous. Then I got one of these tools - it's basically like a pen that gets really hot at the tip. Melts instantly thru plastic sheets - makings cutting quick, painless, and (for me) much more accurate.
It's a great tool so I can't say there are any real downsides. However there are a couple points of caution to keep in mind:
1. This thing melts/burns thru the plastic sheet. That process gives off a small amount of really nasty vapors. Be sure you have a small fan available to exhaust the fumes.
2. The box says do not use on a wooden surface - and yup, I tried, it, you really shouldn't use the tool on a wooden surface. It burned into the wood and left chunks of plastic melted onto it. I got a cheap glass palette from the local art store and it works just fine as a background when cutting.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 17, 2018This machine was suggested with the milar plastic I wanted to make some stencils. Upon purchase I realized how great and easy it cuts through the plastic.. It incluse 2 fine tips one is straight and the other is at a curved angle. I thought I could hold it like a pencils but ended up finding more use out of the angled tip as I could see where i was cutting with more ease.
My only dislike it that I do notice that the finest part of the tip is now bent slightly. It could be how much pressure I put on it as you need NONE. As soon as it touches a surface it will cut through. It could also have bent because its so hot maybe the metal tip bent throughout its use? I used a tool to bend the tip back while the machine was still hot but unplugged.
For the price I do recommend it and I do like it it includes a stand for the cutter to be placed while its heating up, which does not take long at all.
