A Massively Underrated Shaman of Song
by Rudy on 7/1/22The Vogel at Count Basie Center for the Arts - Red BankMy friend and I knew we would enjoy Paula - we know her hits, and we have several friends who heartily recommended her - but if anything our friends undersold how truly mesmerizing and cathartic a performer she truly is. It was a spiritual experience for us in every sense of the word. I was speechless and my friend was shaken. Her voice is flawless and enchanting, her stage presence benevolent yet powerful, her musicianship impeccable, and the duo of musicians accompanying her were absolutely superb. There were several fans who obviously see her often - it was soon very clear to us why they do - and she managed to sweetly acknowledge their loyalty without making the rest of us feel excluded. The evening was like a musical therapy session, where you the listener derive pure emotional benefit without having to do any heavy lifting - Paula did that for us, and bared her heart and soul in a way that was generous and vulnerable, never self-interested or naval-gazing. The stories she told and observations she shared were just as enchanting as her songs, too. This concert happened the night Roe vs. Wade was overturned - an emotional day for all of us - and she managed to take us all in her arms and give us the emotional gut punch and catharsis we needed. What a privilege and pleasure to have been in her presence, especially on a night when we truly needed the mental and spiritual balm she had to offer with her art. She is coming again to our area in the fall, and there is no question of us not going. My friend and I see dozens of concerts, and very rarely are we left stunned with mouths agape. Paula Cole is extremely special and not to be missed. Don’t wait to see this incredible musician.
