About

Melissa Manchester’s career is remarkable not only for its longevity and accomplishments, but for its versatility.  Following her stint as a founding member of Bette Midler’s Harlettes, Manchester’s tremendously successful solo career brought her critical and commercial acclaim.  The “Midnight Blue” singer received her first Grammy nomination for Best Pop Female Vocal Performance in 1979 for the Peter Allen/Carole Bayer Sager-penned “Don’t Cry Out Loud,” winning the Grammy in that category four years later for “You Should Hear How She Talks About You.”  Manchester has also had her songs recorded by Barbra Streisand, Roberta Flack, Dusty Springfield, Alison Krauss, Kenny Loggins and many others.  Two songs she performed, “Through The Eyes Of Love” and “The Promise,” were nominated for Oscars in the same year.  She has written tunes for several other films including The Great Mouse Detective, Lady and the Tramp II, Dirty Girl, and Tyler Perry’s For Colored Girls.

    Amazing performer

    by Valentina on 7/12/23

I got the pleasure of seeing Melissa Manchester at the Pageant of the masters in Laguna beach. It was an afternoon outdoor venue and I was amazed how wonderful she still is. Still has that beautiful voice and such a great story teller and performer she was. After her concert she was available to talk to and she was so kind and personable. I was so happy to have the chance to meet My idol!

    Great show

by JacM on 5/8/23The Vogel at Count Basie Center for the Arts - Red Bank

Melissa has put together a beautiful show featuring video and prerecorded audio backing tracks, as well as two additional musicians who handled keys and percussion. That allowed us to enjoy the exquisite music from throughout her career as we remember it. Her voice remains as strong and gorgeous as ever. She’s also quite funny as she shares the stories behind the music.

    Melissa Manchester is a Gem

by Rmorbious on 2/28/23American Theatre - Hampton

We went to Melissa Manchester's concert in Sellersville, PA last year and quickly ordered tickets for this concert in Hampton, VA. The shows were nearly identical and intimate. These were small venues which allowed for a very personal experience. Melissa's voice is as powerful and moving as the days of her peak popularity. Midnight Blue will likely remain her most beautiful song, but there are many gems in this set. It would have been nice to hear her sing For The Working Girl which is nearly equal to Midnight Blue, however there are many hits here such as Don't Cry Out Loud. She performs these songs with artistic passion. After the show she met with her fans signing autographs and exchanging pleasant words. Melissa is more than a singer, she has a beautiful heart and while we do not know her personally, it was wonderful to be touched by her magic.

    Just okay

by CFFF on 2/28/23American Theatre - Hampton

Nice selections. Brought back memories. Energetic, but candidly, the whole performance was so-so, a bit tired. Sound seemed poor quality. Loud and overbearing.

    Terrific Performance

by Reg on 8/8/22Resorts Atlantic City - Atlantic City

Melissa Manchester was so engaging and gave a terrific performance. It’s a shame that the seating in a theater was arranged for high school lunch time. HALF the chairs in that Mega Star theater faced away from the stage!!! Do disappointed…NO respect for the “Mega Star” or paying customers.

    The one and only Melissa

by Broadway Betty on 2/13/19Aventura Arts & Cultural Center - Aventura

She is warm, natural and expressive. She curates an intelligent, savvy show with interesting musical choices, combined with inside stories of other, well known performers. Melissa is bursting with warmth and wit and a desire to share it all. A Bentley of a show.

Melissa Manchester gets better and better and better

by Rube on 2/11/19Aventura Arts & Cultural Center - Aventura

I first saw Melissa Manchester about 30 years ago at the Tropicana in Atlantic City. She totally blew me away with her enormous talent. 8 years ago I saw her again in Palm Springs and she was still excellent. But, like the best wines, with age she is even better. How she does it, I do not know. She had that audience wrapped around her finger due to her depth of feelings, her superior voice and her true sincerity. Miss Manchester does more than merely sing....she totally entertains. There was not one false step in the entire performance. When I did get a brief chance to speak to her, her genuine kindness was clear and warming. One of the GREAT ones!

    Not What We Hoped For

by A&J on 2/11/19Aventura Arts & Cultural Center - Aventura

Melissa Manchester still has a good voice and it was nice to see her in person. What we found disappointing was that she sang very few of her "greatest hits" which is what we came to hear. Instead, she sang songs to promote her new album of songs from famous "boys". Also, we found her background videos distracting. It was often hard to focus on her with old clips of her singing with Barry Manilow and others in the background. The highlight of her brief (1 hour) show was when she sat at the piano and sang Midnight Blue. Oh, and the warm-up comedian's material was best suited to a nursing home crowd.
