The Bold Beauty Trend You’re About to See Everywhere

Maybe it’s the bright colors that remind us of destinations around the world. Maybe it’s the glimmer of sparkle that brightens up the most boring days. Or maybe it’s the playful, can’t-go-wrong application that makes it easy for even the most makeup-challenged to pull off. But there’s something about this season’s biggest beauty trend—colorful, shimmering, bright eye shadows—that we just can’t resist. Here, see how our editors tested out the looks, and pick up some tricks to try yourself.

What Inspired My Look: Tokyo! I traveled there this year and was so blown away by the city’s energy and intensity. I just thought purple, all shades of purple.

How I Did It: I started with the deepest shade in the inner corner of my eyelid, then extended it out, adding a slight wing at the end. I used this color to rim my lower lashline, too. I then layered the lighter shades on top of each other in the crease and blended it out.

Where I’d Wear It: Honestly, almost anywhere. It’s a given for a night out dancing, but I’m sporting this look for brunch the next day, too, and even for work. I think colorful shadows are fun to incorporate into everyday life, especially now that they’re gaining popularity.

Why I Love It: I grew up figure skating, and glittery makeup totally transports me back to those days. It’s that sense of nostalgia, along with the playful nature of these looks, that has me so in love with this trend.

What Inspired My Look: This look was inspired by the subtle yet in-your-face styles from Euphoria. I love how the actors sport bold makeup looks so casually onscreen—it’s an impressive way to incorporate an artistic side in everyday life.

Where I’d Wear It: Though I’d love to wear a look like this walking down the streets of the city, I truthfully don’t know if I have the confidence to pull it off. BUT if you ever catch me at some odd underground club in Brooklyn, see me like this x10.

What Inspired My Look: Green shadow is something I never thought would work for me, but then I saw how Emma Stone and Man Repeller styled it with a touch of yellow and thought, why not?! They’re the perfect shades for fall.

How I Did It: I have really fair skin, so a full lid of green would have been too much. Instead, I kept the darker hues to the outer corners and lash line and lightened the look with a layer of gold at the crease and inner eyelid.

What Inspired My Look: Red eye makeup can be a risky move, as red eyes are often associated with tiredness, allergies, and general illness, but I have also seen it look very chic. As soon as I saw the Morocco-inspired clay-reds and oranges in this Nomad palette I had to give it a try!

How I Did It: I generally stick to natural shades that don’t require much precision to apply, so using brighter shades was a bit intimidating. For this look I embraced the smudged style that is popular right now. I used a medium sized brush to swipe a clay-red shade over my eyelid, and then used a finer brush to add a bright orangey-red powder along my upper lash line, extending it out past my eye for a dramatic winged effect.
