When purchasing a chandelier, first consider the size of the room. A chandelier that’s too big or small will detract from the space and make a room feel off. A fail-proof way to choose the right size is to first measure the length and width of the room where the chandelier will go. Add the number of feet combined of the length and width to get a good idea of the recommended chandelier size for your space. For example, if a room is 10 feet by 12 feet, opt for a chandelier around 22 inches in width. When looking for a chandelier for your dining room, also be sure to consider the hanging height to avoid head bumps and accidents. A good rule of thumb for dining room chandeliers is to hang them so that the bottom of the chandelier will hang 30 inches to 36 inches above the table.

 

For bedroom chandeliers and foyer chandeliers, always hang the chandelier at a height that gives a 7-foot to 9-foot clearance between the floor and the bottom of the chandelier. If you have ceilings that are higher than 8 feet, mount the chandelier an extra 3 inches higher for each foot above 8 feet.
