THE SUFFERS IN CONCERT:
Gulf Coast soul band The Suffers lights up the stage with a red-hot mix of vintage R&B and funk that showcases the powerful pipes of modern day diva Kam Franklin. Buzzfeed called the Houston-based outfit one of “25 New Artists You Need in Your Life in 2015”, and it’s easy to see why as the dynamic Franklin whispers, croons, and belts her way through the group’s jazz and reggae-influenced songs. At their live shows The Suffers’ 10 members sound off roll call-style before launching into their set, and their confident, unhurried performances allow time for each instrument -- trumpet, trombone, sax, organ, bass, guitar, percussion, and drums – to shine. Holding it all together is Franklin, a down-to-earth performer with a sultry, soulful voice that perfectly matches the virtuosic musicianship on display every time The Suffers perform.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
The Suffers was formed in Houston, TX in 2011 by bassist Adam Castaneda and keyboardist Pat Kelly. The two originally envisioned the project as a reggae jam band, but after teaming up with a crew of virtuoso musicians and singer Kam Franklin they fell into a neo-soul groove. The band’s razor-sharp musicianship and dynamic live shows helped build a strong local fanbase, and before long they were raking in praise and awards from the Texas press. Hometown fame soon gave way to national acclaim, and in 2013 the The Suffers released their debut EP Slow it Down b/w Step Aside. They followed up in 2014 with the EP Make Some Room, which they supported with high-profile performances at SXSW and the Late Show with David Letterman. On tour The Suffers get ticket buyers begging for more, drumming up big expectations for their full-length debut album and future shows.

The writing and performance of this groups music is fantastic. The musicianship was incredible. You can see the love they have for one another on the stage. And the genuine care and regard for the audience was palpable. You could feel the love in the room lol. The band clearly was having fun, the audience was having fun. Kam Franklin is a phenomenal performant AND a beautiful human. Go see this band. Get up to the front of the room. Listen to the songs. Dance, enjoy, buy the albums, and repeat!
The Suffers are one of the most consistently fun bands I've ever seen. My brother and I make sure to see them every time they come near. The Carver is a cool venue to watch a show!
Love the verzus format with two bands battling it out on separate stages on opposiite sides of the room. Tank and The Bangas killed it!
This was an excellent return to live music! We had so much fun. The Sound Clash concept, with The Suffers and Tank and The Bangas did not disappoint.
This show was EPIC! The Suffers are already amazing on their own, but seeing them with Tank & the Bangas, plus all the other special guests, felt like a once in a lifetime event. Everyone on stage was on spectacular, the crowd was energized, but respectful, & I felt happier than I have in a long time. I try to make sure I never miss a Suffers show in houston & I’m so glad I was able to attend this incredible “showdown” between these 2 bands. I can’t wait to see what comes next.
Wow! This concert let us have it. Two stages! One for 713, the other for 504. Delightful rival between two amazing sounding bands. Audience respected each other, and no issue with crowd control. Some had masks, some vaped and some had drinks. It was a fantastic concert from both bands and MCs. Thanks for a flawless show!
Love the organization, health check for Covid. The set inside the building for both performances, and ease of use exiting the building. Both performers were in excellent. Love the ease of paid parking.
Well I had to leave early but I got to hear a song that I don’t think they have recorded yet 🤔 but I’m fiening for that song so bad it’s not even funny. It’s true soulful music, Gulf Coast Soul baby!!!
The band was great, lots of funny banter during the show and they stayed after to spend time with the fans.
