Buying a CPU for your computer

What is a CPU?

Your computer’s central processing unit holds the billions of transistors that are responsible for reading and carrying out the instructions of the various inputs and software programs in your computer. In other words, the CPU is what makes your computer run.

Like many of the components in a computer, it is seated in the motherboard. It fits into a socket from which it can connect with other parts of the computer through what are called “buses”.

Importantly, the CPU works in tandem with many other components. For instance, while the CPU has some limited internal memory, it needs access to a memory card to keep track of complex tasks, like running simultaneous programs. Additionally, some CPUs can handle processing basic graphics, but more intense graphics, like those used in PC gaming and virtual reality, will need to utilize a second processing unit called the GPU (graphics processing unit).

Finding the best CPU for you

If you are building a desktop computer, you will need to ensure that you choose computer components that are compatible with one another. The best desktop CPU won’t do you any good if you don’t have a compatible motherboard to put it in while assembling everything. You need to make sure your motherboard has a socket that is compatible with your new CPU. Keep in mind that, you will also need to install a CPU fan or heatsink.

In terms of the specs for your new CPU, you will want to base them around the activities you intend to enjoy on your new computer. So, if you are building a gaming PC, consider looking at what CPUs are used in pre-made gaming PCs, or talk to gamers who are experienced in building gaming PCs.

If you have your eye on an expensive computer processor and you have time, wait for an opportunity to find the computer CPU for sale through a promotional discount.
