Product description

About the Author

Raymond Carver was born in Clatskanie, Oregon, in 1938. His first short stories appeared in Esquire during Gordon Lish's tenure as fiction editor in the 1970s. Carver's work began to reach a wider audience with the 1976 publication of Will You Please be Quiet, Please, but it was not until the 1981 publication of What We Talk About When We Talk About Love under Gordon Lish, then at Knopf, that he began to achieve real literary fame. This collection was edited by more than 40 per cent before publication, and Carver dedicated it to his fellow writer and future wife, Tess Gallagher, with the promise that he would one day republish his stories at full length. He went on to write two more collections of stories, Cathedral and Elephant, which moved away from the earlier minimalist style into a new expansiveness, as well as several collections of poetry. He died in 1988, aged fifty.

Raymond Carver was born in Clatskanie, Oregon, in 1938. His father was a saw-mill worker and his mother was a waitress and clerk. He married early and for years writing had to come second to earning a living for his young family. Despite, small-press publication, it was not until Will You Please Be Quiet Please? appeared in 1976 that his work began to reach a wider audience. This was the year in which he gave up alcohol, which had contributed to the collapse of his marriage. In 1977 he met the writer Tess Gallagher, with whom he shared the last eleven years of his life. During this prolific period he wrote three collections of stories, What We Talk About When We Talk About Love, Cathedral and Elephant. Fires, a collection of essays, poems and stories, appeared in 1985, followed by three further collections of poetry. In 1988 he completed the poetry collection A New Path to the Waterfall.

I got this after reading a story of his (Collectors) in a compilation. I love how he can establish the story in a paragraph and how they can be open to interpretation. There were only 2 or 3 that didn't resonate massively but even they were readable. I didn't realise the main themes would be predominately relationships, alcohol. What a short story compilation. A specialist in relationships, alcohol, dead end jobs, financial worries and love mostly ending in despair. And can hook you with a paragraph. Sad it's over but it will always have pride of place in my bookshelf and I'll be re-reading it for sure. There were so many highlights and although bleak there were some buts later on that made me laugh out loud. Brilliant with dialogue too. When he introduced tension and unease he can be very scary and got me hooked turning the page, especially in the terrifying 'So Much Water so Close to Home' story that has stayed with me. Highlights for me: What Do You Do in San Francisco, Collectors, What We Talk about When We Talk about Love, Where I'm Calling From, Blackbird Pie and the monumental So Much Water So Close to Home. One of the best short story compilations I've read

This is a book of short stories for grown-ups who are looking for an understanding of elements of society they would not otherwise come into contact with. Raymond Carver, along with Denis Johnson, is one of the few writers who have produced writing that gets to the heart of its subjects without feeling a need to append some artificial ending. Life is seldom tied up neatly, and nor are the events that go to make it up. Carver writes with great simplicity, but his work seems deeper with every reading.

Short stories tend to stop just as you get into the yarn and feel for the characters. This collection is however of such a high quality that while some stop abruptly, what went before is certainly worth while.
The best of this genre I’ve read so far.

Exceptional value, a used copy that hasn’t been. As new.

This is a great collection of Carver's work. It shows how his themes developed through his working life from stressful marriage, through alcoholism, to self-acceptance. The stories themselves are small masterpieces. The emotional detail is at times uncanny, creating a shiver of truth. Reading these accounts, one sometimes feels that not just one's reading mind but one's whole self has been carried off: that one has been there, lived these events for oneself.

I am aware that Raymond Carver is one of the most respected authors ever, and I'm not arguing about his writing. It's the subject matter! So gloomy and depressing! Story after story about miserable couples tearing each other apart, alcoholics and an atmosphere of repressed violence. My favourite story was "Errand" about the death of Chekhov, because it was such a relief to discover a different subject matter. Yes, this is a great book, supremely American in content, and to be learned from - Carver quotes V S Pritchett's definition of a short story as "something glimpsed from the corner of the eye, in passing." But perhaps these short stories are better dipped in to rather than read in one sitting.

5.0 out of 5 stars La realidad inquietante de lo cotidiano prosaico
Reviewed in Spain on 31 January 2021

    5.0 out of 5 stars
