Tower of Power on Tour
When Tower of Power took the stage at The Fillmore in San Francisco for their 40th anniversary show in 2008, it was as full circle as live music moments get. A recorded introduction by the dearly departed, legendary promoter Bill Graham — who gave the band their big break and signed them to his label in the late '60s — kicked off the energetic musical explosion that Tower of Power have never stopped bringing to the stage. The Tower of Power five-piece horn section, led by founding members Emilio Castillo on tenor sax and Stephen "Doc" Kupka on baritone sax, has been the driving force behind a group with over 60 touring members in its history. The R&B funk and soul revue also features furious percussionists, guitar, keys and more vocal blends than you can imagine. The elite collection of musicians have never stopped touring, and whether at a casino theater or a classic concert hall, a Tower of Power show is always gonna be a kickin' good time. Their Oakland-born sound emerged in 1968, and even after 50 years their shows still manage to feel contemporary.
Tower of Power in Concert
In 1968, Oakland's Emilio Castillo and Stephen "Doc" Kupka formed a band with the goal of playing at San Francisco's iconic Fillmore theater. By 1970, Tower of Power were not only on the stage, but signed to Bill Graham's San Francisco Records for their debut album East Bay Grease. When they moved over to Warner Bros Records in 1972, they started to leave a timeless mark beyond the Bay Area with the release of now-classic albums — Bump City, Tower of Power, Urban Renewal and more. Throughout their 19 albums, including 2018's Soul Side of Town, the band have covered every inch of R&B, soul and funk, constantly evolving and paving the way for many other artists.
Another great show by these soul musc8 legends! My first time at the Factory and what a great venue!
TOP is simply the best funk and soul band ever! So tight. They pin your ears back with high quality high energy sound. They've been in existence and touring for 56 years. These guys are like energizer bunnies! You can't help but get up and start groovin in the aisles! I think this is my 10th time seeing them live. They never disappoint! Another awesome show, guys!!
TOP was great….the first song performed was “We Came To Play” and boy did they ever!! Lots of soul & funk….still going strong at 56 years….wow! I glad we had a chance to be there!!
I was disappointed at first. Rocco had died. Girarbaldi just retired. Jordan tentative. His vocal mike was too low. Mix not good. Couldn't hear rhythm guitar or ride cymbal. Barely heard crash cymbals. Bass not clean enough. But Jordan got more comfortable and that helped immensely.
We have seen almost 40 TOP shows and 7 different singers. Jordan John is fantastic. This was his third show and he did an awesome job. Improving from here will be amazing.
The group sounded great. The venue might have indicated you were not permitted to bring a handbag in advance. Whoever manned the spotlight was not on their game, didn’t know the band, or both. Jordan John’s was a great singer, but very different than their singers in the past. It took a while to get used to him, but I think he is a great compliment to the band.
Tower of Power played at the Factory 3/14 and they were outstanding. The band was great, the music was tight and the interaction with the audience was wonderful. We had a great evening listening to the music and the stories. We can't wait for them return already.
We braved tornado warnings, sideways rain, and spectacular lightning to enjoy a band that was formed 56 years ago and still have 2 of the founding members! If you haven’t listened to their music prepare your ears for the sounds of old school soul accompanied by a pounding rhythm section and a multi-talented horn section. Did I mention it was their singers debut tonight?! It was definitely with the trip to St Louis!
Amazing band! Wow! Just your run of the mill 10 piece Funk/Soul band with the world’s greatest horn section that has 56 years of practice. New lead singer was fabulous. Where else do you hear a couple James Brown songs live! Love TOP!!!
We are huge fans of Tower of Power and they were better than ever Thursday night! Please come back to St Louis soon! First time at The Factory and we loved it. Parking is awesome and seats were great. Lots of bathrooms and places to get drinks on both floors! Great time!
