In the New York Times bestseller that the Washington Post called “Lean In for misfits,” Sophia Amoruso shares how she went from dumpster diving to founding one of the fastest-growing retailers in the world.

Amoruso spent her teens hitchhiking, committing petty theft, and scrounging in dumpsters for leftover bagels. By age twenty-two she had dropped out of school, and was broke, directionless, and checking IDs in the lobby of an art school—a job she’d taken for the health insurance. It was in that lobby that Sophia decided to start selling vintage clothes on eBay.

Flash forward to today, and she’s the founder of Nasty Gal and the founder and CEO of Girlboss. Sophia was never a typical CEO, or a typical anything, and she’s written
#GIRLBOSS for other girls like her: outsiders (and insiders) seeking a unique path to success, even when that path is windy as all hell and lined with naysayers.

#GIRLBOSS proves that being successful isn’t about where you went to college or how popular you were in high school. It’s about trusting your instincts and following your gut; knowing which rules to follow and which to break; when to button up and when to let your freak flag fly.

“A witty and cleverly told account . . . It’s this kind of honest advice, plus the humorous ups and downs of her rise in online retail, that make the book so appealing.” —
Los Angeles Times

“Amoruso teaches the innovative and entrepreneurial among us to play to our strengths, learn from our mistakes, and know when to break a few of the traditional rules.” —
Vanity Fair

“#GIRLBOSS is more than a book . . . #GIRLBOSS is a movement.” —Lena Dunham

Left me feeling inspired.
If you’re lacking motivation in your life right now, this is the book you want to be picking up next. Full of inspiration from the very start, #GIRLBOSS will leave you wanting to go out there and prove to the world you can achieve anything you set your mind on.Although #GIRLBOSS isn’t a biography, we get to know Sophia throughout the book and hear how she became the badass lady that she is today. Her hilarious writing and her encouraging enthusiasm for the business she runs make this book delightful and inspiring to read.Sophia Amoruso is the founder of Nasty Gal, a hugely successful online clothing store that originally started out on eBay. From humble beginnings, Sophia worked tirelessly on her business, adding a personal touch to everything she did, from photographing the clothes models to arranging the most eye-catching thumbnails, to even making sure the labels were placed neatly on the packaging when she sent the item to its new owner.Through her endless passion for the work she did and the effort she put into focusing on her customers, making sure she paid close attention to every bit of feedback she received, Sophia transformed Nasty Gal into the success story that it is today. This book is all about empowerment, encouraging women to go out and kick ass at everything they do. It’s also got fantastic attitude injected into the writing that makes every chapter sharp and witty. What really works about this book is how wonderfully honest Sophia is about herself and about business. Her life and her journey to where she is now makes for some interesting and entertaining reading. She is able to admit where she has gone wrong in the past, and how some of her mistakes have helped her to get where she is now.#GIRLBOSS isn’t a book that is going to lecture you on what you’re doing wrong. It’s there to tell it as it is, and to prove to you that you can deal with it. Sophia isn’t going to tell you what you should do, but she offers advice as to what can help you based on her experiences and the knowledge she has gained in business. This book is all about creativity, being driven, and stepping up to be the boss that you are. With its quirky design and witty writing, #GIRLBOSS is a fun read that will hopefully leave you feeling inspired to go out there and make your dreams a reality.

Absolutely loved the crap out of this book. Been a big fan of Nasty Gal since the days of when their now-website address used to direct to a porn site -- Kind of miss it (It was funny). Sophia is straight up, blunt, and honest, but also hilarious, down-to-earth, and encouraging. Unless you already have your s*** straight, then congrats, but for the rest of us, whether you're straight out of high school or middle-aged, this book reminds us that it's never too late to chase after what we want.

This book isn't about fashion; it's not a how-to for those curious about pursuing the industry or Amoruso's opinions and comments on today's trends. Instead, it's a book of strength, confidence, and humility. It's a comforting address and honor to those of us who feel and have always felt separated from the majority of society and what their conventions, standards, and expectations tell us to do. Dress how you want, do what inspires/ignites a flame in you, always ask questions, take risks, make mistakes, etc. Invest in yourself and create good habits because that extra hard work and personal dedication will only make you a better person. Ultimately, we are not only capable of pursuing our own dreams, but with the right attitude, work ethic, and just being true to ourselves, we can make a difference in this world and in other people's lives.

As a twenty-something working with many hats within a fast-growing restaurant startup in what is pretty much an entirely male-dominated team, I can't say enough good things about how #GIRLBOSS gave me that snap back into reality. I've delayed graduating from college to pursue work experience and much of my current skills and talents have been self taught. Though it's been nowhere close to easy and I've contemplated quitting probably at least once a week for the past two years, I've stuck with it and even stuck my own footprints along the way -- even if I had to scheme around some things to get my way ;) The world may tell you there is one straight path to success, but that isn't true, and Sophia is a stellar example of that.

Bought this for my kindle, but it was so great, I think I'm going to buy the physical copy for my own personal library. Anyways, thanks to #GIRLBOSS I'm going to go do awesome s*** now... and fix my credit score. Yikes.

    Me:
Guy who loves to read, is fascinated by business and as a result has read his share of business and professional development books. While I do love fashion, this is also not a fashion book either.
(aka Probably not the target demographic of this book)

I was initially skeptical of this book and incorrectly assumed it was another "teen readers" book with size 12 font. Nevertheless, I am glad my friend Anthoula recommended it to me as it is one of the most refreshing reads of 2014.

Ms. Amoruso has done a service for Millenials and future ambitious young professionals. She knows her audience and her success with this book comes from her authenticity. She writes like a #GIRLBOSS --she appeals because she writes with a consistent sense of confidence and humility, and her successes and failures only serve to support this. Ms. Amoruso is like a good friend who's having that deep chat with you in the car or over coffee. No surprise her book is a New York Times Bestseller.

As much as I laud #GIRLBOSS, I think one gets the most of it by reading it with an open mind.

    #GIRLBOSS the book is NOT:

*an encyclopedic book on job hunting, career development
*the answer to all of life's problems, especially if you are a millenial
*a "get rich quick" scheme (Ms. Amoruso makes this very clear early on)

    #GIRLBOSS is:
*an authentic voice and foundation for becoming a strong, successful professional (you still have to do the work, she did)

*a springboard for future reading/research in business, professional development and indirectly so, fashion

*advertisement of Nasty Gal (this is not a bad thing, it just shows that she truly represents her brand and company beyond the $$$, even though she recognizes $$$ is a big component of business)

*great, quick read for girls AND guys. You can be a #dudeboss too

I admit, I own a copy (read it twice, again quick read) and am proud to say I've gifted two copies this past holiday season.

Great job Ms. Amoruso. Very inspirational!

5.0 out of 5 stars I bought the book after watching the Netflix series
Reviewed in India on August 25, 2019
I watched the Girlboss series on Netflix and was intrigued enough to buy the book. If you are really interested in Sophia Amoruso's journey, skip the Netflix show and read this book.

She is brutally honest about her past, and journey, and dispense a few tips that helped her build her company, compared to the TV show, she is a far more likeable person, no offense but in the Netflix show they portrayed her as a bratty millennial drama queen instead of a intensely driven woman.

Do not expect this book to teach you how to build your own business, it's essentially a biography, but a nice one that is quick and easy to read.
