Review
Overflowing with hard-won wisdom and compassionate insight, Charlie Craggs' To My Trans Sisters is a love letter to our community from the women who understand, better than anyone, what our world is like. An invaluable resource for any trans person - and those that love us. -- Jennifer Finney Boylan, author of She's Not There and Long Black Veil
This inspiring collection of letters is essential reading for anyone thinking about transitioning and feels alone, or who wants to understand the diverse experiences trans women have. The messages of hope, humour and triumph over adversity make this book a powerful tool, regardless of where the reader is on the gender spectrum. -- Sarah Savage, co-founder of the Trans Pride Brighton charity and author of Are You a Boy or Are You a Girl?
This invigorating anthology, written by trans women for trans women, is a welcome departure from the established genre of texts about trans individuals that seek to explain their lives and experiences for a presumed audience of primarily cisgendered individuals. Editor Craggs, a trans activist and founder of Nail Transphobia, assembles over 70 letters written by trans women, sharing the advice they wish they had been given earlier in life. Rather than documenting the psychological or physiological steps of self-discovery and transition, these letters discuss transness as embedded in fully individual lives. 'Don't get lost in the transition!' writes Kate Stone, founder of Novalia, a groundbreaking printing company. Fashion designer Gogo Graham's advice is more sobering: alluding to the threat of violence many trans people face, she writes, 'Find shoes in which you feel able to run.' Contributors are predominantly from the United States and Britain, though a scattering of letters, such as entries by Audrey Mbugua, a transgender activists based in Kenya, and Miss SaHHara, a singer-songwriter from Thailand, provide global context. The impressive professional and activist credentials of the letter writers, who include the creator of the transgender pride flag and the first transgender officer to serve openly in the U.K. military, might leave the reader wishing for a few unexceptional voices. Yet these women's success stories help counteract media narratives of tragedy without glossing over the pervasive discrimination and violence trans women, particularly trans women of color, face daily. While this book is written for a trans audience, cis readers will find value in reading a work not written primarily for them. (Nov.) -- Publishers Weekly
A touching and inspiring anthology of letters edited by Craggs (founder of Nail Transphobia),this offering collects missives of advice for transgender women. Brief biographies precede each letter, allowing readers to get a sense of the background of the writer. Letters come in different formats: traditional letters, letters to the writer's self, poetry, single sentences, and more. Craggs gathers an astonishingly diverse cadre of contributors, who offer both practical and emotional advice. A full range of emotions are represented in the raw, allowing for celebration, anger, and beyond. The work is appropriate for reading straight through or for picking up at different points, delivering the experience of transgender women, nonbinary individuals, and more. Cisgender readers will get a sincere look into the lives of many trans individuals and glean excellent guidance for embarking on any personal journey, while trans readers will find a range of strengthening reflections. VERDICT A triumph in topics of gender and women's studies, this anthology is unlike anything available today and is a must-have for those seeking to understand the trans community on a myriad of levels. -- Library Journal, Starred Review

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 31 October 2017A little gem of a book. Any collection of open letters will be uneven, but there's plenty of hard-won wisdom here from an impressively diverse selection of trans women. It occasionally stalls - for example India Willoughby's letter to herself is short on insight and big on how brilliant India Willoughby is - but overall it’s powerful, thought provoking and sometimes laugh out loud funny.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 19 October 2017Mandatory disclosure first: I contributed to this book. To that extent I have a stake. But trust me, the advice from the other trans people who contributed is priceless. This is the motherload. If you’re trans and just at the start of your journey the advice in this book is priceless. It’s like visiting your fantasy support group and staying for a month. If you’re a trans veteran (like me) then the letters from these other trans veterans are something to reflect upon, providing perhaps new perspectives on your own experience. And if you’re not trans then this is one of the best ways to understand the essence of who we are. This isn’t about the shocking fact (to you) that people like us take this path. No. This is a privileged insight into the souls of people who’ve travelled places 99% of humans will never get to go. As trans people we are required to go to the edge to be comfortable in ourselves, and we bring back gifts.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 4 December 2017I'd consider this essential reading, not just for women like me at the start of their journey but for for folks who'd like to understand what it can feel like to walk in our shoes. For someone such as me who's occasionally filled with doubts that i'll ever get "there" this book has been a wonderfully affirming message to stay strong and be proud of who I am.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 18 April 2018An inspirational book for those at any stage of your journey, full of magical quotes and beautiful stories. I especially found it useful for those days when things are particularly hard, it was great to pick this up and read the stories/quotes and it gave me a breath of fresh air and motivation to continue. A must read!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 28 November 2019As a cis woman, it’s such a good book to read to understand and support trans friends and young people. Written by such a range of voices.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 20 September 2019If you're transitioning (or just trying to understand what it's like) - this collection of short letters by Charlie Craggs from a range of trans women gives some valuable insight and advice. Really helped me along with my first steps at a time where I felt nobody understood what I was going through - it turns out plenty of trans women have come before me and DO understand - and have come through stronger.
Obviously this is very much aimed at those who are transitioning MtF, not FtM - I'd love to see a sibling book for trans guys at some point as this was so helpful to me... Hopefully Charlie is thinking of doing this!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 9 June 2019As an older person in the early stages of personal acceptance and transition, I found this book to be one of the best, most engaging and supportive texts written on the issue. Well worth reading and well done Charlie Craggs!!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 26 April 2018A must have for any transwoman or would-be transwoman, or trans ally. Or just a reader wishing to hear more of the way transwomen exist in this world, Very humane, I liked the brevity of contributions, and the range of contributors.

5.0 out of 5 stars An important powerful read for all trans women
I ordered this book on a Friday morning, got it Saturday afternoon, and tore into it, finishing midday Sunday. This book was inspirational, listening to these successful trans women tell their stories and give their advice put me in such a good mood, even if many of the stories do have their ups and downs. Honestly, I felt changed after reading this book, and I was caught off guard by seeing essays from many of the trans women who are already inspirations to me.
