The National Foundation for Celiac Awareness estimates that as many as one in 133 Americans has celiac disease. Unfortunately, 83 percent of people who have this terrible disease are undiagnosed or misdiagnosed—suffering through years of pain and misunderstanding. Award-winning actress Jennifer Esposito was one of those 83 percent, receiving an accurate diagnosis only after decades of mysterious illnesses and myriad misdiagnoses.

Now Jennifer shares her riveting personal journey—from her earliest memories of her childhood in Brooklyn to her years as a young actress, all the while suffering from unexplained, devastating ailments. Jennifer's struggle to finally receive an accurate diagnosis is one that anyone who has a chronic disease will share. But this is more than a story of suffering. It is the story of one woman's valiant journey to take charge of her health and rebuild her life.

Not only will you learn from Jennifer's personal story, the book also guides you through early diagnosis, sharing the steps that helped Jennifer heal. Plus, you'll find recipes she uses at home, along with recipes for some of the delicious treats she offers at her own gluten-free bakery, Jennifer's Way, in New York.

For anyone struggling with a chronic illness,

I bought this on a whim and found it exceeded my expectations. It's a well written account of Jennifer's life. To call it a struggle doesn't even come close to what her health situation has been, thus her life. Her words are moving, and lessons helpful. Celiac is a Very Real Disease not a fad diet. It's a life that can lead to death sooner than imagined, by the damage it does to the gut. Ever hear, our gut is our life, well no disease make this clearer than Celiac. But Jennifer offers hope, and food choices to steer towards. As well as anti-inflammatory supplements she's found helpful (not her brand so not shilling). Her follow up Cookbook, Jennifer's Way is Excellent and Highly recommend too. My only disappointment is the the links; GlutenFreeMall, Vitacost, Shoporganic, are all No more when searched. But the. book was released in 2014 so ten years later it's understandable, but unfortunate. Also Lydia's Organics Sprouted Cereals are Unavailable everywhere. Her site is there but for wholesale only.

Last noted on pg 180 she attempts an answer, what the Hell is Celiac Disease. "... very common autoimmune disease, which means for some unknown reason (probably part; genetics, part immunological, part environmental)." Yes these can be contributors. I would also add to this, vaccines play a role in developing autoimmune diseases. Today we are seeing a concerning high uptick in our populations IgG4 values from a recent medical flu injectable intervention received. This IgG4 signals an overly reactive immune response, of which we are unsure just how it will manifest in one's health in the months, years ahead. It's worth considering as a possible contributing factor in What the Hell is Celiac Disease. Or even
a lesser reaction of, Gluten Sensitivity. Buy the book, it's a good one. God Bless you Jen for sharing every uncomfortable detail of the reality you've lived. Thank you

This book has been crucial to my understanding of Celiac Disease and Wheat Allergy. I know, I know, don't start yelling yet! Celiac Disease is not an allergy. You are preaching to the choir. I love this book because of the clarity of thought and the well presented information in it.

Anyone who has a life threatening disease or allergy can learn from Jennifer's horrendous journey through our medical system. A system that is all too eager to dismiss symptoms and problems that doctors can't immediately or easily resolve. If it can't be diagnosed in a 15 minute visit, it must be all in your head. I've been there and so have some of my friends.

I was told after 59 years of symptoms that doctor's said were contradictory or unrelated (I must be imagining it or lying!), that I have a wheat allergy, verified by testing. I've had many allergy tests and other tests over the decades, but it's the first time anyone told me I was allergic to wheat. The doctor was dismissive to my questions of why is it only showing up now, what do I need to do, etc. You can imagine the rest of my questions. His only advice was "avoid wheat" and he left the room. As far as he was concerned his job was done. I no longer see him.

After removing wheat from my life, no easy task as you already know, my health improved exponentially. I wondered why I still became so ill with nausea, vomiting, joint pain (the list of complaints goes on) for days or weeks and then feel healthy only to start the cycle over again. This book gave me the answer, along with so many other answers. Those Gluten Free isles at the grocery store are not necessarily Gluten Free! I don't know why I was shocked to learn this. I should have known that companies will misuse labels to make money, not caring if people are hurt in the process. Some of the products I was using which proudly displayed "GLUTEN FREE" in huge letters on the front of the package, hid a disclaimer in tiny print on the back, " This product may have been manufactured in a plant which processes wheat products". If it says "May have", you know that it means it definitely was. I hope you find this as disgusting I do. I also understand why I'd start vomiting at 2:00 a.m. (after eating a Gluten Free meal at a restaurant) and have to sleep curled up around the toilet when I'd briefly stop vomiting and keep getting sick all night. Many thanks to all you restaurants who don't care about cross-contamination, or the health of your customers. I have encouraged my friends to not patronize you anymore, you don't get a second chance at trying to destroy my health.

I have one piece of advice for those of you who have "friends" or relatives who feel compelled to try to get you to eat things that they like, but which will make you so very ill. Ask them, "How much arsenic would you like in your coffee or tea? I only used 1/8 of a teaspoon when I made it, but you might like the taste better if you add more". If this doesn't put it in perspective for them, you need to drop them out of your life. Anyone who is comfortable with trying to force you to eat something that makes you ill, is not someone who cares about you.

I eat Gluten Free though I don't have Celiac Disease and only a verified Wheat Allergy because if I don't, I get very sick for a very long time. I have so much respect for all of you who cope with this disease. I have zero respect for anyone who tries to minimize or sabotage your ability to do so.

Jennifer - I don't know if you get to read these reviews or not, just in case you do, I want to tell you how much this book touched me. I have been going to doctors for the past 15 YEARS trying to figure out what is going on with me, my brain, and my body only to be told there is nothing wrong. When I turned 45, I went in for a routine colonoscopy and we talked a bit and he said I think you have celiac. I was like what is celiac?? Your book was one of the first books I read about celiac and I cried reading your story because I related so much to the 'Am I crazy??' feeling you described so well in your book. Yesterday I was officially diagnosed with Celiac and having a better understanding of what my new relationship with food can look like, through your wisdom in this book, makes me feel much more confident about the changes that I have to make for myself. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who is in process of getting diagnosed, newly diagnosed, or has someone they love that has been diagnosed. Excellent voice, visualizations and emotion used throughout the entirety.

Highly recommend!

I am newly diagnosed at age 59. This book made me smile, made me cry (more than once), made me nod my head in agreement and finally, has made me realise that this is my new normal whether I like it or not.
Fantastic book for anyone recently diagnosed, and anyone who isn't coping so well.

I read this book in 24 hours... just couldn't stop reading it as it it was so good to be reading about Coeliac Disease from the perspective of someone who has lived with it, and has a fantastic knowledge of it. This book should be read by everyone who has Coeliac or thinks they may have it, anyone who is related to, friends or colleagues with, or in a relationship with someone who has this disease. I have Coeliac and I find it so difficult - getting friends and colleagues to comprehend the seriousness of the illness and the fact that a tiny bit of gluten will do me harm... it's soul destroying... I may not have an anaphylactic reaction but the harm is being done and the effects are very real. You are made to feel like a fussy, faddy eater and basically a nuisance. Coeliacs should not be made to feel this way simply for wanting to be well. Jennifer Esposito puts this so well in her story and I thank her for all she is doing to promote awareness of Coeliac Disease. I can't wait to return to New York to visit her bakery.
