Review
"Urban Tantra is the most pleasurable, fun, meaningful, and liberating book on sex ever! Thank you, Barbara!" --Christiane Northrup
"Urban Tantra gives me hope that the world will become a more sexually satisfied, ecstatic, enlightened, and inclusive place." --Annie Sprinkle
"This handy how-to promises mind-blowing, toe-curling, highly spiritual sex for humble beginners, BDSM aficionados and everyone in between. Sex educator Carrellas is on a mission to bring Tantra-the ancient practice of sacred sex, in which interpersonal connection and transformative ecstasy are the norm-to the modern world, to reclaim sex from "messed-up, sexually-dysfunctional, judgmental, and ignorant culture," and to shift the urban sex paradigm from recreational activity to a sumptuous, impassioned way of life. Not that one necessarily needs that kind of ambition: Carrellas offers ways to enhance any old sexual encounter (with techniques like breathing, stroking, prodding and piercing), techniques for solo play and countless uses for a trunk full of toys. Same sex, transgender, and multi-partner play is encouraged (if not highly recommended), and the text is peppered with illuminating, try-this-at-home anecdotes. Pictures and diagrams are whimsical but instructive, making Carrellas's cheerful descriptions of unusual concepts-"gigglegasms," "rainbow rubs" and "the mushy puss" among them-easy to grasp. A final chapter, on "Sex Magic," examines the power of Tantra to achieve a number of effects, from backpain relief to a happier office to world peace; however far you'd like to take your sex life, this friendly guide will likely show the way."--Publishers Weekly

Tantra is such a vast, ancient, and mysterious subject that it’s difficult to find any two people who can completely agree on what it is. Happily, you do not have to spend the rest of your life studying the history and many philosophies of Tantra to receive its many benefits and pleasures. Nor will you need to go out and buy a lot of expensive stuff or change your wardrobe or learn to speak Sanskrit.
Tantra is a Sanskrit word that means “loom” or “weaving.” Tantra can also mean “a continuous process,” “the carrying out of a ceremony,” a system, a theory, a doctrine, a technology, or a section of a book. As such, the word Tantra can simply refer to a treatise on any subject at all. So you’ll often see it used in the titles of books that have nothing to do with the kind of Tantra we’re talking about.
Even when we use the word Tantra to refer to the spiritual practice that embraces sex, we’re likely to find many different opinions and interpretations of that as well. Countless Tantric texts were lost during the numerous times that Tantra was driven underground over the centuries. Many other teachings were never committed to writing at all. They were transmitted by word of mouth—from guru to disciple, often conditionally upon the disciple’s promise of compete secrecy.
No one knows exactly when Tantra began. Many scholars believe the seeds of Tantra were planted in shamanic, matriarchal societies three to five thousand years ago. The Tantra from which the modern form of Tantra that we’ll be exploring is descended began in sixth-century India during a period of cultural wealth, renewal, and intellectual advancement. Buddhism, Jainism, and the various Vedic traditions we now call Hinduism were the dominant religions in India at the time, and they were all segregated by gender and caste. Tantra appealed to the burgeoning middle class that was unwelcome in these religions precisely because of gender and caste. In this sense, Tantra was a personal spiritual pursuit that functioned as a sort of sociopolitical revolt. Unlike the established religions of the day, Tantra provided the spiritual seeker with a direct relationship to a guru/teacher, powerful rituals, an absence (and sometimes a deliberate flaunting) of traditional religious and cultural rules, acceptance of people of most castes and genders, direct participation with—or embodiment of—the divine, and a belief that the sensual experiences of the body were an effective and legitimate path to enlightenment. In addition, Tantra held the fundamental belief that enlightenment was possible in one’s current lifetime, without the need for reincarnation.
Today, Tantra is most often thought of in the context of sex. Historically, the role of sex in Tantric practice appears only occasionally and quite briefly in original texts. There were many different Tantric sects, and only some practiced the days-long maithuna ritual featuring sexual intercourse, drugs, and forbidden foods. More important than ceremonial intercourse with highly initiated partners (dakinis, or “vessels of divine energy”) were the intensive ritual programs involving ecstatic meditations, chanting of mantras, complex yogic postures, mental visions (yantras), and eventually gaining the ability to practice divine intercourse with oneself.
Ritual sex—whether acted out or visualized in meditations—was a physical embodiment of the Tantric view of the creation of the world: Shiva (the god of pure consciousness) joining in sexual love with Shakti (the goddess of pure power and energy) gives birth to the world. I love this image—it is the most erotic beginning-of-the-world story I have ever heard. But its implications are far greater than that. Tantra views life itself as an ongoing process of creation, an ongoing marriage of consciousness and energy at every level of existence. The very essence of Tantra is contained in a few words—an excerpt from the Vishvasara Tantra:
What is Here is Elsewhere.
What is not Here is Nowhere.
This is one of those statements about which volumes have been written, but I think there’s sufficient power in its simplicity: what is spiritual is physical, and what is physical is spiritual. That being the case, if consciousness exists in my mind, it also exists in my body. If energy exists in my body, it also exists in my mind. Thus, at the heart of Tantra is the elimination of duality. In Tantra, we don’t divide mind and body, good and evil, matter and spirit, or male and female into opposing camps. In fact, Tantra is the only spiritual path I know of that has always acknowledged all genders as equally powerful, everywhere, all the time.
Western culture’s emphasis on Tantric sexual practices began in the nineteenth-century colonial period in India. Victorian-era Christian missionaries singled out sex as the most alarming aspect of the Tantras. This equation of Tantra with sex was further complicated by the Western discovery of the Kama Sutra, even though the Kama Sutra was never a Tantric text. The Victorians were fascinated by both sexual secrets and the mysticism of India, the combination of which made the emphasis on the erotic elements of Tantra inevitable and enduring. Since then, this Westernized interpretation of Tantra has been combined with other philosophies and practices (such as sex magic) to create the many modern schools of Tantra practiced around the world today. Tantra changes with the times and the cultures in which it’s practiced and is influenced by the intentions of both teachers and practitioners. Still, some root principles remain constant:
- Tantra is first and foremost a personal practice of liberation.
- Tantra views both the human body and earthly life as concrete manifestations of divine energy.
- The Tantric belief that to experience sexual excitement is a taste of divine energy is a profound and revolutionary thought, as relevant today as it was in the past.
When I use the word Tantra throughout this book, I am talking about my own modern school of Tantra that I call Urban Tantra. This school is founded on the basic Tantric practices and principles that recognize that (1) sexual energy can be a powerful path to spiritual progress, (2) sex can be sacred, and (3) all of life can be included and celebrated on the path to enlightenment.

The essence of her work is the inseparable connection between your sex life and the rest of your life, and the happy integration of body, mind, and spirit.
Barbara brings a holistic, metaphysical, practical, humorous, entertaining and gender-fluid approach to conscious sexuality and to all her work. She began her work in metaphysics and conscious sexuality during the AIDS crisis in the late 1980’s—a time when the connections between sex, spirit and healing were at their most strained. Barbara has facilitated countless healing circles and support groups for women, men, transgender people, artists, people with life-threatening illnesses and people with HIV/AIDS. For four years she was a facilitator for and on the Board of Directors of the New York Healing Circle, which was founded in response to the AIDS crisis and incorporated the principles of Louise Hay's work. As her workshops grew in popularity and in attendance, her work expanded to include people from all walks of life and in all stages of sexual evolution.
The more Barbara explored sex and consciousness, the more she saw the possibilities for healing and expanded consciousness in all forms of “sacred” practices, including Tantra, Tao, Quodoushka, Reiki, breathwork, metaphysics, performance, ritual, herbal medicine, bodywork, erotic massage, commercial sex work and BDSM. Her books and her workshops are an eclectic mix of sexual and spiritual practices designed to encourage readers and participants of all sexual preferences and genders to expand their capacity for both pleasure and spiritual fulfillment.
Barbara taught Caitlyn Jenner and her friends how to have gender-free orgasms on the E! reality series I Am Cait and was featured in the Learning Channel’s Unusual Orgasms segment of the series Strange Sex. She collaborated with Annie Sprinkle to present a new/ancient vision of female sexuality in theatrical form in MetamorphoSex, a week-long workshop for women culminating in ritual-performances. She also directed the Australian premiere of Annie’s renowned one-woman show, Post Porn Modernist. - Reviewed in the United States on September 16, 2010I've been familiar with Tantra for over a decade mow, both as a philosopher and a practitioner, and as a cultural analyst too. I've greatly enjoyed reading this book and I'd like to share what I found very valuable. Sooooo many people out there still think of Tantra as one of those esoteric schools where, if you're a 'person with a penis' you learn to 'last longer' so that a 'person with a pussy' will want to have sex with you again, and if you're a 'person with a pussy,' you want to take your mate so he can figure out how not to leave you high and dry in the middle of things. This seems a caricature, yet, when you exit the circle of the initiated, it it not too far from the truth. So, many people approach Tantra as a small luxury, the treat you can give yourself when you've been really good. Others don't get near it at all, lest it feel altogether tooooooo good. All think it's a sort of mainstream luxury, like shining up your car with bees wax. Very few really know that Tantra is and always has been a countercultural tradition: a vein that runs parallel to the mainstream ideology of things, in its original cultures where Hinduism prevails. The many become one in Vendanta Hinduism, the one becomes many in Tantra. At least, this is how I put it in Gaia and the New Politics of Love, an ecosexual theory book.
Barbara Carrellas is one who understands this only too well. And has written a book that transfers Tantra into a Western cultural context without betraying its original countercultural attitude, without reducing it to a soporific way to get your typical hets happier in their ideologically-correct married bliss.
Yes, Tantra is countercultural to begin with. Can you imagine in caste-ridden Hinduism, claiming that when the one goes to the many and not vice-versa, this is good? Like making religion democratic, making the sacred run its erotic energy into the fabric of life as it is! Woooooooooow! That's heretical, the Pope would say if he were a Hindu guru!
And that's why Carrellas is so skillful and successful too in showing what Tantra can do for all the queers, the bis, the gender-queers, the singles, the polys, the BDSM people who also seek sex as a way to access the sacred and not quite sure how to get there yet.
To use a metaphor from the theater, one might say that her adaptation of Tantra to the urban landscapes of our post-modern world is what Brecht would have called 'political theater.' A period piece is a show where all the characteristics of the original setting are reproduced seamlessly, yet the essence of what's relevant about the piece to the new viewers can be lost in the process, and often is. A Brechtian adaptation re-situates the piece in the experiential present of those who view it. This process of re-situation the real re-vitalizes the piece with what's relevant to them. As in, for example, a Romeo and Juliet where we see a picture perfect Medieval Balcony Scene, and a West Side Story adaptation where we see the ethnic strife that crushes their passion in.
And the most interesting part is that Carrellas's book doesn't even try to engage the terrain of critical theory, or even be literary. It is just presented as a manual (a very effective one at that) of orgasmic breathing techniques for those who wish to put their sexual energy to good use for a more balanced, more holistic and healthier way to be related to our surroundings and those who accompany us in life's journeys. That's where the deconstruction of what we take for granted begins. For example, in teaching Erotic Awakening Massage techniques, she refuses to divide humans as 'men' and 'women,' and opts for the neologisms 'persons with penises,' and 'persons with pussies' I have also adopted in the opening of this. This deconstruction aligned with practical teaching is exactly what we need.
It is very important to re-sacralize all forms and agents of erotic expression in our age if we want to muster the creativity, the respect, and the sensitivity to the needs of the ecosystems we are embedded with and without whose generous hosting we can easily become just another extinct species. Tantra is just a way to bring ritual, spirit (in the Romnance language sense of air/breath/soul), ceremony, and magic into the way we choose to actualize the already always existing relatedness that runs among all of the living. Obviously, bis, polys, queers, gender-queers, BDSMs, swingers, and people in other practices and communities are integral parts of today's erotic landscapes. Urban Tantra embraces the complexity, the diversity of this landscape, and presents tantra as a pervasive element of it, with practices that emphasize the ritualistic aspects of eroticism with its elements of balance, safety, kindness, beauty, peace, sacredness, and community. When we get to Tantra as a countercultural tradition, we can't be too surprised that it applies so well to practices of love that emphasize participation and inclusiveness.
Thanks Barbara, for this. My practice of Tantra arose spontaneously from being sexual with consciously loving out-of-the-box people. But I always asked myself, 'is this queer enough for me?' Now I can learn Tantra formally (maybe in one of your workshops) without feeling at risk of being 'cured.' As you revisit the past to invent a new future, you create a Tantra that is post-modern and pre-modern too!
Gaia and the New Politics of Love: Notes for a Poly Planet
- Reviewed in the United States on November 24, 2015I just read all the negative reviews for this book, and I totally understand the fundamental reason behind the unfavorable perspective on this beautiful piece of art, Urban Tantra. It is simply that these people can't see themselves being open to the experience, let go and even picture themselves in such against - society's norms "acts." The way Barbara perceives sex and its aspect of all sexes and genders being able to share the love freely with no attachments and only all the love in the world for each other, could be looked as totally out of this world concept of hippies.
I personally love the book and it is changing my life on a really quick pace. She is truly a beautiful woman, who's message to the people does mainly one thing - she's trying to open people's mind to let go of the old ways we perceive sexuality and face it the way it truly is, the way it runs naturally in the depths of our DNA. She tried to help the human psyche let go in the moment, live fully in it. If you are into spirituality, if you familiarize with Buddhism, hinduism, Taoism, and are exploring deeper into the world of love and interconnection of all there is, look no further, because Tantra guides you the way to it through ecstasy, through the vessels of your own body. Barbara is the perfect projectionist/translator of the ancient Asian philosophy to the Western masses of the 21 Century. If you are open minded or are curious in exploring deeper into your psyche and soul through you body. Buy It now!!! I'd pay 100$ for this book. After successfully having the craziest orgasm I've ever had from merely breathing (from the second try ever), I can't stop but rave about this book and the author endlessly. I want everyone to truly experience ecstasy at its best.
Thank You Barbara. Can't wait for your workshop in New York in the Winter.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 14, 2019Barbara Carrellas provides a wonderfully practical and readable introduction to how to integrate kundalini energy into your health and sex life. She is careful to stress the core of tradition, providing an in-depth look at what chakras are and how they work, while intentionally targeting a 21st century audience. Carrellas’ book is especially valuable in its inclusion of queer and nonbinary people into what is traditionally a two-gendered area of spirituality, as well as including BDSM and group tantra. Best of all, this is not just a theoretical book but a practical one chock full of exercises and instructions. Carellas includes guides to breathing and meditation; awakening your chakras and your kundalini energy; tantric rituals for yourself, for you and a partner, and even ritual sex ideas for healing various ailments and blocks in your life. Having just had a recent (and unexpected!) kundalini awakening, I was eager to find more information on how to implement this new spirituality into every area of my life. This book was the perfect introduction.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 1, 2018This is an essential text for expanding yourself, your interactions, your sensuality, and your spirituality. Very accessibly written, Barbara opens truths that can benefit us all - however you might identify. She comes from a place of love. You can feel her encouragement, and her insights are helpful. Her stories resonate, and some of her early attitudes and experiences have similarities to my own growth - that is reassuring. Love and connection starts with our selves, and her book is very well organized to help us connect with ourselves before starting to improve our interactions with others. If you only ready the first parts of this book, it would be worth the time and money!
Particularly helpful are the tools she provides to help communication with your partner(s). I felt like I had a mentor to help me grow.
Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great reef for you and your partner and Improvement and the bedroom
I highly recommend reading this book if you're into the Tantra readings of Eastern philosophy when it comes to relationship building. We both enjoyed the process and we are highly energetic from each other. It also helps with our meditation between each other when it comes to intimacy and energy transfer between two partners. If you're into meditation at Eastern philosophy in connecting with your partner I highly recommend it. Also please consult with your doctor if needed.
