If you're into engineering/architectural wonders you will likely enjoy this. If you like walking down and then up uneven, downward tilting spiral stairs you will enjoy this. I have no idea where the reviewer who says there was a handrail was, as we did not find any handrails on our walk and occasionally one of the lights on the staircase were out . As a middle aged woman with her senior aged friend I was just worried one of us would sprain an ankle. Still, we got some serious exercise in and the way the stairs go in a helix is pretty great. We were drenched in sweat by the end of this experience, asking ourselves what the point was.

Orvieto was a lovely surprise, up on the funicular railway a group of us decided to go down the well.€5 and 250 steps later, we were at the bottom. I'm not the fittest person, but you can go at your own pace It's not a race. The steps were wide and people could get pass you easily. Views were amazing, I'll not kid you the return journey was tough but my friends got me there, in all it took me around an hour but so glad I did it.....

Very cool in many ways. You get nice photos and a break from the heat since the temperature is quite a bit lower underground. We went there in the evening and had no waiting at all and plenty of space for taking the pictures. Tickets are bought at an office side by side withe the funicular. Groups of six get a discount, so team up.

This shaft is a fascinating work of engineering. The visit is also suitable for children (as long as you keep them away from the gratings). This very deep shaft has a particularity that, in times of COVID, is excellent: the descent ramps and the ascent ramps never meet, so it is difficult to create crowds during the visit.

Don't ask me why nearby pocket-sized, papal bolt-hole Pienza has been given World heritage status and Orvieto has not?

This tubular photo opportunity is an architectural wonder and along with the one, if not, THE most beautiful cathedrals in Italy should have guaranteed Orvieto protected status. A must see.

The well is 175 feet - and 495 steps (each way) - deep. The path was built with two spiral stairways - one going up and one going down so traffic did not intersect. The path was built wide enough for donkeys to transport the water - back in the day.

Things get a little "hairy" as you looked over the edge in to the bottom of the well because there were no railings. Just be careful.

The entrance fee was covered in our Orvieto Carta Unica ticket.

The well is no doubt a super bit of engineering and features a stairway down and one up running alongside each other but not meeting, I think it's some form of helix. If you are interested in civil engineering its probably worth giving it a run. As a layman with no engineering background it's a long trek down to a pool of water followed by a log trek back to the surface.

I would recommend the Unica Card which will give you access to this and many other sights, but I did not purchase and paid the 5 Euros for the trip. The engineering is amazing to see first hand. The water at the bottom of the well was so still and clear that I didn’t think it was real.

A cool well in the shape of a double helix so that those going down don't meet up with those climbing back up the well. Cool photo opportunities from the top and bottom. My DSLR was able to capture the blue pool at the bottom midway down. The audio guide is only 1 euro and the only source of information you will get, so my husband listened to that during our descent and filled me in on the neat history afterwards. The well is directly to the right of the funivia station once you reach the top. Only take 30 minutes of your time. Although there are many stairs, they are not steep with a gentle slope as if going downhill or uphill in my opinion.

..yes I counted! But so worth it! What a cool experience. It's part of the city pass, so if you're up for it, do it! There is also a bus to/from the well from the Duomo (also included in the city pass). I was the only person in the well, so it was a bit eerie. It felt like something out of the Zelda video games! Not recommended for people with asthma, claustrophobia, or heart problems (and I would also say not for people who suffer from vertigo, too, like me--just don't look down!)
