Rent a Boyfriend Hardcover – 10 Nov. 2020

4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 153 ratings

To All the Boys I've Loved Before meets The Farewell in this incisive romantic comedy about a college student who hires a fake boyfriend to appease her traditional Taiwanese parents, to disastrous results, from the acclaimed author of American Panda.

Chloe Wang is nervous to introduce her parents to her boyfriend, because the truth is, she hasn't met him yet either. She hired him from Rent for Your 'Rents, a company specializing in providing fake boyfriends trained to impress even the most traditional Asian parents.

Drew Chan's passion is art, but after his parents cut him off for dropping out of college to pursue his dreams, he became a Rent for Your 'Rents employee to keep a roof over his head. Luckily, learning protocols like "Type C parents prefer quiet, kind, zero-PDA gestures" comes naturally to him.

When Chloe rents Drew, the mission is simple: convince her parents fake Drew is worthy of their approval so they'll stop pressuring her to accept a proposal from Hongbo, the wealthiest (and slimiest) young bachelor in their tight-knit Asian American community.

But when Chloe starts to fall for the real Drew--who, unlike his fake persona, is definitely not 'rent-worthy--her carefully curated life begins to unravel. Can she figure out what she wants before she loses everything?

5.0 out of 5 stars Really cool twist on "fake dating" trope
Reviewed in the United States on 22 March 2021
I love this book! It's funny and charming and heart breaking. I stayed up to 2am to finish this book and it's one of my favorite romances I've ever read. The writing is gorgeous. There is deep, deep emotion infused into every page. Everyone has clear motivations driving their actions. The conflict is intense up to the very end.

But I think my favorite thing about it is, while some people aren't big fans of the fake dating trope, this has a really fun twist on it. The "boyfriend" in question is an "operative" who has mastered a lot of skills (sort of a Master of Disguise Trope), and part of the story is unraveling who he really is--I LOVED THAT!

This book would make an excellent heartfelt holiday romcom movie, so if that's the sort of book you're looking for, this book would be perfect.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cute Fake Dating

For the most part this was a super cute fake dating romance. The book covers multiple holidays from Thanksgiving through Valentine’s Day which I loved.

However, be warned…everything wasn’t completely fluffy. It was uncomfortable and sad to read about the way Jing-Jing is treated by her parents - at times it felt like something that could never be overcome. Plus the book felt about 50 pages too long.

5.0 out of 5 stars I LOVED THIS BOOK!
Reviewed in the United States on 9 December 2020
It was funny and so freaking hard to put down (I spent way too many nights reading into the morning). Chloe and Drew's relationship is exactly what I think love should look like, both make the other better by supporting each other and encouraging each other to grow. This is easily one of the best books I've read all year.

3.0 out of 5 stars Super cute

I thought the plot of this book was super great and how they fell for each other.
Getting though this book was a bit tough. I knew very little of Chinese culture and traditions before this book and I think that's what slowed me down reading through this. Overall great read with some over explained parts in it that didn't need to be told.

5.0 out of 5 stars “This takes the moon cake”
Reviewed in the United States on 31 December 2020
Oh. My. Goodness. I LOVED this story. It took me a little bit to get into it, but once I did I devoured this story. I could relate to some of Chloe’s feelings and enjoyed watching as she worked through them. I adored Drew and how he was true to himself even when it was scary. I especially enjoyed watching them AND their relationship grow as the story progressed. I enjoyed all the Chinese culture throughout the story and find myself wanting to learn more about it.
