I bought rechargeable batters for it. The switch was turned on Jan 18 and never turned off. As of Jan 28 it's still working great on its original batteries. The rechargeable batteries are ready to go when the original batteries die.
I don't know if this will work for all Alzheimer's patients, but it's worth a try.
The cat is a little ragged looking but cute. The fake fur is soft over a hard body inner shell. The meow and purring doesn't sound real. The purring does have a vibration affect and can be felt when the cat is on the sofa or bed. The real cat will wrestle with it. When it meows it gets more attention from my wife.
When I met my wife she said a house isn't home without a cat. Over the years we had a number of cats and this one has been a good companion.
Reviewed in the United States on February 29, 2024
We received the cat a few days before Christmas, so my mother and I checked the cat out before giving it to my grandmother. Yes, the movements are jerky. The coat is not as silky smooth, nor it is as plush as a real cat. The "meow" also seemed more human than cat-like. My parents and myself have had cats for over 25 years so we definitely know the real thing. Regardless of its true cat-like deficiencies, my mom and I still had a good time petting and interacting with the cat. It added a sense of comfort and was a fun social activity for the 2 of us.
We placed the cat back in its original box, wrapped it and gave the cat to my grandmother on Christmas Day. She was thoroughly surprised at the gift! Her immediate reaction was to hug and pet the cat. Then we turned it on and she interacted with the cat, on and off, for most of the day. Her interactions continued on the days after Christmas. My grandmother also received a life-like baby doll for Christmas, and she encouraged her baby doll to interact with the cat (and via-versa).
I think my grandmother realizes that the cat is not living. However something in the design of the cat accomplishes its goal of providing "Joy For All." It's a great product and the price is appropriate.
I plan to update my post once my grandmother has had the cat for a couple of weeks to comment on its long-term use and her continued interest in interacting with the cat. Currently, we couldn't have picked a better gift for her. It's truly a delight to see her happy and to be able to spend the quality time with my grandmother. So for that, this cat is priceless!!
UPDATE- Feb 1st, 2016
The cat is still going strong and grandma still cares for him everyday. When the cat rolls on his belly and raises his paw, grandma gives him a high five! Sometimes she tells the cat to stop talking or wonders why he is moving so much (the sensors automate the cat's movements), so it has startled and confused her a few times. But nothing more than a normal "sneaky" cat would. Above, she is still enjoying her Joy for All cat, and we are enjoying her contentness. :-)
She LOVED it! She named it and carried it with her from room to room for several months. Five months after we bought it my mom was put in hospice and was bedridden- part of Lewy Bodies dementia unfortunately.
At any rate, “Butterscotch” the fake cat stayed on her bed and she would pet her and talk to her and it clearly brought her joy for many more months.
There were times in the beginning that I did a double take when I saw the cat because it does look real. 😂
The purring is very realistic and the meow is fairly realistic- I have and actual live cat so I’m not just speculating. 😂
I would highly recommend this for elderly or mentally disabled people who need “a friend”

The slight whirring of the servos is minimal and doesn’t detract from the realism that a toy of this sophistication brings. I find him quite comical actually, he really is a very entertaining pet.
The body is unique in that you can feel an inner ‘skeleton’ similar to a real cat, underneath all that fur, which extends throughout the entire body, the limbs and down to the paws. The weight is similar to a real cat and it’s soft in all the right places; it certainly doesn’t feel like a ‘brick’ as one reviewer described it. Even the tail, which someone said is merely two strips of fabric sewn together, isn’t as bad as that. Yes, it’s not stuffed but any filler would make it too stiff and the fur and fabric used give it enough substance to feel like a proper cat’s tail. It’s also designed to drape nicely and tapers at the end so it hangs convincingly.
The fur is quality and dyed to mimic a real cat’s markings and it’s very fine textured and soft feeling with a nice length. I would advise brushing it often, with the specific brush provided, to preserve the fine appearance; don’t use a normal hair brush which tends to pull out the fluff. Someone thought the fur so realistic they were worried it might be real but the label clearly says it’s polyester. The battery housing is well hidden beneath the label on its underside and secured with velcro and it’s not difficult to open.
I’m impressed with this robotic cat and think the Company have excelled themselves in providing a realistic, highly interactive toy at an affordable price. I will end by sharing some of the attention to detail I particularly like, one of which is his little mouth - a true red colour which includes a pink tongue and two little white pointy teeth! The eyes have proper eyelids and are a nice cat-like shape and emerald green. The little pads on its paws, though made from hard plastic (the only downside as they could have made them from a softer material such as rubber or leather) however, are proper pad-like and the correct pinky colour. It’s two floppy back legs are jointed and can be moved back and forth, as can its front paws. The ears are the right shape and realistic looking even on the inside, the whiskers are long and real feeling and the cat doesn’t need to be constantly petted to emit movement and sound on its own. It’s the proper size, weight and feel of an adult cat.
In my opinion there is much attention to detail that as a real cat owner in the past, I can vouch for how funny, endearing and lifelike “Joy For All” cat really is. Ideal for everyone, not just seniors.
*Some tips for longevity:*
1)I found that when the cat rolls back for a tummy rub, he needs to be on a flat, even surface like a chair, table, or your lap, where he won’t fall off - any RESTRICTION of its movements will cause the motors to whirr noisily and eventually wear out.
2)Branded batteries such as Duracell seem to last a lot longer than the cheaper ones.
3)I don’t really recommend these pets for young children because they are quite delicate, have a lot of moving electrical parts and sensors and won’t stand up to being pulled about. They are designed to be a sophisticated adult ‘companion toy’ or a fun pet for older children.
I bought this as company for myself whilst working long days from home, and because I didn’t want a real cat with all the hassle and cost.
