About Fishlock's Cottage

Fishlock’s Cottage is like a child’s drawing of a house. It appears on a 1724 drawing of Avebury, so we know it’s been here since at least the early 18th century. It’s in a quiet spot on the edge of the village, with its own enclosed garden, yet still within the gigantic bank and ditch of Avebury henge.

Avebury is one of the wonders of the British Isles: the focal point of a vast ceremonial landscape of monuments, stones and trackways dating from the Neolithic (late Stone Age) and Bronze Age, now a World Heritage Site.

Set off from Fishlock’s garden gate in any direction and you’ll find yourself somewhere extraordinary. The mighty stones of Avebury’s circles are all around you. Not far away are enigmatic Silbury Hill (Europe’s largest man-made mound), West Kennet Long Barrow and the Ridgeway with its clusters of burial mounds. Turn left out of the gate, and the ancient track called Green Street will lead you all the way over the downs to Marlborough.

Further afield, the World Heritage city of Bath is just an hour’s drive away. Enjoy wandering around this stunning spa city with its award-winning restaurants and cosy cafes.
