The Philadelphia Phillies mascot, the “Phillie Phanatic” is considered one of the greatest mascots in all of sports and has been made a charter member of the National Baseball Hall of Fame. The Phanatic is the Phillies biggest fan and has been known to act a little crazy, creating mayhem on the field and taunting opposing teams since 1978. The Phantic was created by Bonnie Harrison and Wayde Erickson, who had ties to Jim Henson’s Muppets. The highly recognizable Phanatic is a big, green, flightless bird “from the Galapagos Islands”, with a megaphone-like snout and extendable tongue. He’s front and center at every Phillies game, zooming out on an ATV before the first pitch, hyping up the crowd and laying hexes on the visiting team. He gets under the opposing team’s skin sometimes (most famously, the 1988 Tommy LaSorda altercation) but most players and fans just have to laugh at the Phanatics joyful enthusiasm and inventive antics. He gives the visiting team a good-natured hard time, taunting them and dancing provocatively toward their dugout. He’s known for wandering the stadium greeting fans, buffing the heads of bald fans, pranking the broadcasters in their booths, and shooting hot dogs into the crowd using a pneumatic cannon. In the beginning, the Phillies didn't actually own the Phanatic trademark and as his popularity grew, they paid $215,000 to buy the rights to use his image in perpetuity. The Phillie Phanatic has become synonymous with the city of Philadelphia and he does a lot of great charity work in the City of Brotherly Love, bringing joy to hospitals, classrooms and other special appearances. The Phanatic’s favorite food is Philly cheesesteak and Rocky is listed as his favorite movie, which led to him making an appearance in the closing credits of the 2006 Rocky Balboa movie.
