About

A groundbreaking, musically adventurous group, Stereolab formed in the early '90s when Tim Gane (leader of the London-based band McCarthy) met French singer Laetitia Sadier. The group's earliest output consisted of three singles, collected on Switched On in 1992. That same year Stereolab released their debut full-length album, Peng!—an experimental take on pop music featuring singsong melodies, choral vocals and droning keyboards. The '50s-pop-influenced The Groop Played "Space Age Batchelor Pad Music" appeared in early 1993, followed by the band's first U.S. release, Transient Random-Noise Bursts With Announcements, later in the year. The group explored more dance- and jazz-influenced territory on 1996's Emperor Tomato Ketchup. Jan St. Werner of Mouse on Mars and John McEntire of Tortoise joined Stereolab for their 1997 release, Dots and Loops. 1999 saw the release of Cobra and Phases Group Play Voltage in the Milky Night, produced by John McEntire and Jim O'Rourke (Sonic Youth, Gastr Del Sol). The mellow, lounge-music-inspired Sound-Dust followed in 2001. Tragedy struck the group in late 2002 when longtime band member Mary Hansen was hit by a truck and killed while bicycling. Stereolab reemerged in 2004 with Margerine Eclipse, another polished album full of bubbly melodies and synth-heavy music. Oscillons from the Anti-Sun, a box set collecting previously unreleased tracks and a DVD of videos and TV appearances, was released in 2005. The prolific group issued Fab Four Suture in 2006.

    Doesn't get any better

by Nardac on 10/19/22The Observatory North Park - San Diego

This was my second time seeing Stereolab live and it was again a magical experience. This is such an iconic band and has been around for decades, so their fans always receive them with joy and eagerness. Their delivery reciprocates the energy of the audience. This was such an amazing show to attend at the Observatory San Diego, and Laetitia came afterward to talk to the fans and take pictures with them. Such an absolute pleasure to see that after all these years, they are grounded and grateful for the people who love them. Must see!

10pm doors were more like 10:45 doors. A/C fans were blowing constantly. Music was great because it was Stereolab

    Stereolab is Superb

by Anna B on 9/23/22The Fillmore - San Francisco

This epic band layers their sounds and delivers an amazing performance. To hear them live was an unforgettable. The sound was so much more intense and lush than you could ever get from a recording. To see and hear the band members effortlessly navigate their complex songs was worth attending in person as well. Often artists can’t deliver live what you hear on a recorded track. A live Stereolab performance is an experience to behold and so worth attending.

    Great night out

by MeetingPikey on 9/23/22The Fillmore - San Francisco

I love this band and have been following them since I heard "Pack Yer Romantic Mind" in 1993. So right there I'm gonna give them a good review. But it was more than that. I like the venue, The Fillmore, and the crowd was great. The sound was exceptional as was the lighting. But the way Stereolab performs is the best of all with their ability to plant a groove into their music and build it to a crescendo that borders on the ecstatic, banging the audience into raves and roars, screams and hollers, all the while people dance to this powerful rhythm that's such a part of Stereolab's music. And to top it all off, when they do encores, they don't play one song and quit, they give the audience a rich dessert of melodies, both old and new, in this case from their most recent release "Switched On Vol. 5," and let the audience immerse itself into their music one more time. They seemed to be having fun and so was the audience. Laeticia Sadier chatted with the audience as if she was performing in a living room, she seemed that sincere. And it never detracted from the show itself. It was dreamy fun for me and is why I tend to see them for as many shows they might book while in San Francisco.
