The Wailin' Jennys on Tour

The Wailin' Jennys Instagram description reads "Purveyors of fine harmony," and it's certainly an apt description. You'd be hard-pressed to find a finer trio of birdsong-like, sweet harmony talent than The Wailin' Jennys.

Officially forming in January of 2002, The Wailin' Jennys celebrated their 20th anniversary in January 2022, and they've never sounded better.

In those 20 years, they've released five albums, with the last two, Bright Morning Stars (2011) and Fifteen (2017), reaching No. 1 on Billboard's Bluegrass chart. The cover album Fifteen houses one of their most requested songs during live performances, a remake of Tom Petty's "Wildflowers."

Their renowned live performances are filled with humor, show-stopping harmony, and a wealth of instrumental skills. Everyone should see The Wailin' Jennys in concert at least once. You won't hear harmony done this well anywhere else.

The original trio of Ruth Moody, Nicky Mehta and Cara Luft came together as The Wailin' Jennys after guitar shop owner John Sharples suggested they get together for what was meant to be a one-time-only performance at his guitar shop in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Sharples is also responsible for suggesting the group's name -- a funny take on country star Waylon Jennings.

Heather Masse joined Mehta and Moody in 2007, and the band became known for the trio of talent they are today.

They have varied backgrounds in music and interests, each contributing songs that form the band's unique folk/alt-country/pop sound.

The Wailin' Jennys have amassed two Juno Awards -- one for Roots and Traditional Album of the Year in 2005 for their debut album 40 Days and the next in the same category for Bright Morning Stars in 2012. Their sophomore album, Firecracker, won the Folk Alliance Award for Contemporary Release of the Year in 2007.

They've been popular guests on Garrison Keillor's public radio show A Prairie Home Companion and have played sold-out venues for adoring fans across the U.S., Canada, and internationally.
