Sh#t Your Ego Says: Strategies to Overthrow Your Ego and Become the Hero of Your Story Paperback – February 21, 2017
Purchase options and add-ons
“Your life could change. And that scares me.”
Sometimes our worst failures lead to our greatest transformation.
In 2012, James McCrae left behind a comfortable life in Minnesota and a successful career in advertising to move to New York City and pursue his dreams of being a writer. Soon after he arrived, Hurricane Sandy ripped through the eastern seaboard. New York City was underwater, and James —jobless and running out of money—was suddenly homeless. Fleeing to the island of Culebra for refuge, James sat alone on Flamenco Beach while his greatest doubts and insecurities rose to the surface. What he discovered was his Ego—and it had a lot of sh#t to say.
This story of adventure, redemption, and transformation reminds us that we all have two voices inside us: the Ego and the Higher Self. The Ego is our reactive, attached mind that tells us we’re victims of circumstance. The Higher Self is our source of intuition and imagination that reminds us we’re the creators of our reality. Sh#t Your Ego Says exposes the battle between these voices.
With arresting honesty and candid, compelling prose, James takes you through practical strategies for overthrowing your Ego and reclaiming a life of creativity and freedom. Whether you’re looking to achieve meaningful career success, improve your relationships, or unlock your imagination, this book provides a no-nonsense roadmap to living with purpose.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 19, 2017On occasion, you open a book where you read the first chapter and you can't seem to put it down; This is this S#it Your Ego Says! Ladies and Gents, this page turner of a book will inspire you to change how you think and let go of your ego. Grab a highlighter and get ready to be inspired by a masterful wordsmith! A great quote from the book, "Outer reality is a projection of inner reality. Don't worry about changing your world; instead change your focus. All places are filled with light. When you shine light on the darkness within yourself, the light around you becomes visible." We all want to create a meaningful life but we are human and our ego gets in the way. At times, life is a turbulent tornado and James McRae reminds us with poignant humor, art, and imagination we can take our life into our hands and navigate our thoughts. This book helps you connect with your higher self, creating a pathway to live your best life possible. I took countless notes and revisit them again and again. We are constantly inundated with information and it is so easy to get caught up in social media, the judgements others, and most importantly the judgements we have of ourselves. "Greatness cannot be obtained, it is already within us. We must simply strip away the ego and stand naked in our power." I have shared this with countless people and it has been one of my favorite reads all year. We have a choice in how we live our lives and this book provides countless solutions to live our best life possible. If you feel this books warrants a negative review, I challenge you to read between the lines and look at your own ego. Perhaps it has overtaken you so much that you are afraid go within and see the light!

He’s very articulate and has always been quite the motivational speaker. Give this book a shot! It will teach you how to oppress your ego and take control of what really matters in life - reality! I struggle with PTSD from fighting in both Iraq and Afghanistan. This book helped me put some issues that I thought were influenced from outside forces into a perspective where I quickly realized they were actually self inflicted. Thank you James! You helped me in ways trained professionals couldn’t. Semper Fidelis Mr. Mad Hatter!

- Reviewed in the United States on December 23, 2017When I found this book, I was mid existential crisis in Barnes and Noble, desperately looking for anything that could offer some clarity in my life. I had just been laid off from a job I hated and inside I was crumbling at the thought of going through another cycle of job hunting and interviews for jobs I knew I would hate. I knew I needed a change but I didn't know what or how to find it. Fortunately, this book jumped out at me and I was able to leave the store a little less panicked.
Armed with this book and a determination to find myself, I boarded a plane to Australia (a spontaneous trip fueled mostly by the aforementioned crisis), and prayed that life would be better on the other side of the 2 weeks.
And fortunately, they were and I did. Sh#t Your Ego Says helped put into words what I knew I needed but didn't know how to find. Purpose. It helped to describe the voice in me that had always been gentle, kind, and loving. Higher Self. And the thoughts that had been unkind and driven by fear. Ego. The day I finished the book is the day I realized what my purpose is, and I cannot thank James McCrae and the country of Australia enough for providing insight and inspiration that helped guide the way. This book was a catalyst to big changes in my life and I would highly recommend it to everyone. In fact, when I got home I bought 3 copies from here to give as Christmas gifts. It is well worth the read!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 5, 2022The first thing that I want to say that is a real breath of fresh air (especially if you read any number of e-books, or e-books turned to print)- is that this is a well written book. Easy read but not dumbed down, and well proofed and edited. You really can sense that he has been a writer really working at it. It is completely autobiographical focused on a hugely transitional point in the author's life and the story is written with keeping the reader's interest in mind which often seems to be missing often in autobiographic (or even fiction) writing sometimes. I was only slightly put off by the way it jumped the timeline- not that it did, this device is perfectly fine- but in sometimes the place or manner it did it sometimes seemed confusing- but that could be just my perception. The reason I fell short of the 5 stars in my rating is- partially because it didn't fully match how it was marketed, and much of that material, when referenced (this meaning the strategies to overthrow your ego, or the critic's praise of being "eckhart tolle for the internet generation") were a bit underwhelming. Don't get me wrong- if you are new to mindfulness, and the thoughts on the inner journey there are a lot of take aways here and you will get a great primer for it here. Maybe because the experience was also new to the author....but I felt most of the concepts were presented in the same way as it has been many times. (with this type of information, as well as so much more- the information is available everywhere- it is in how you present it in a new way, or add a new perspective that is important). This of course is also from the point of life in which I sit. someone else it may be all new and strike them differently.
Which is why I do recommend this book- maybe those parts will speak to you differently- and even if not- it is a good read for the story itself and he is a masterful writer. I plan to purchase his other book in the near future.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book for anyone who struggles with 'negative mind talk'
Wow! For anyone looking for strategies to eliminate that negative voice of self doubt in your head, this book is for you. There is something on almost every page that resonates. James Mccrae's style is down to earth, honest and humorous, making this book a lot more readable and relatable than other Hay House books that deal with similar subjects. Would thoroughly recommend!

5.0 out of 5 stars Book that changed my life
Last year amidst covid, I ordered this book thinking that it will help me control my temper. Looking at the title I thought it had something to do with remaining calm. But what I was not expecting was a book that opened me to a completely new perspective on how the life works. The book flows brilliantly and every idea presented in the book is very original. It subtly and wonderfully answered me questions I had always had about different aspects of life.
There are so many authors around preaching about life, telling people to live life a certain way and advertising all this on such a large scale. On the contrary, the book away from all mumbo-jumbo and gibberish talk, will actually benefit you. It refreshes your life's perspective without any big ideas and hard self investments.
It is and will always be one of the most treasured book of mine.
