Editorial Reviews
Review
"Julia Turshen’s new book is a rich compendium of recipes that are reassuringly do-able, full of inviting flavour, designed to make life easier and bring pleasure to the kitchen as much as to the table. This would be quite enough, but added to this, Turshen elaborates on the recipes, adding advice as to how the various components of a recipe can be tweaked and turned into other dishes and - this is always a joy to the home cook - how leftovers can be refashioned into further meals."—Nigella Lawson, author of At My Table
A Washington Post Best cookbook of 2018!
“Julia invites us to broaden our taste buds with her fresh, approachable, never-fussy cooking. Now Again leaves no dish and no one behind: garlicky shrimp with tequila and lime will turn the next day to shrimp and kimchi pancakes; cucumbers with sumac and warm pita are a no-brainer for even the most novice of cooks; matzo ball soup and Passover tradition aren’t abandoned; and a wife’s birthday cake will leave no spouse unsatisfied.” -YOTAM OTTOLENGHI
“Now Again is a kitchen essential tool. Julia Turshen shares a definitive plan to help you think differently about leftovers with delicious recipes the first time and second time around.”-CARLA HALL
“Let’s be honest. If all you’re looking for is a recipe, the internet’s got you covered. But if like me you read a cookbook to make friends over food with the person who wrote it, then Now Again is perfect. Julia’s personal stories, approachable recipes, and conversational tone suggest that you’re sitting at her kitchen counter shelling peas or peeling carrots. She makes you feel like you’re a part of things. Plus Julia sheds light on two skills I need to hone: reinventing leftovers and delegating.” -VIVIAN HOWARD
“I am so excited about this book because Julia is very, very good at throwing unpretentious, cozy meals together and I know this because I’ve been shamelessly stalking her plates and picnics on social media for years, hoping to glean ideas. This book will save me a lot of snooping in the future and I don’t care that it’s only August, I’m making the Not-Kosher Jewish Christmas menu first.” -DEB PERELMAN
A Goodreads Choice Award nominee for Best Cookbook 2018

- Reviewed in the United States on September 8, 2018I will admit that I am a fan of Julia Turshen. I have her other books and appreciate her food activism.
This book is a delight! The quality of the book—the photos, the paper it’s printed on—are all fantastic. It’s a joy just to flip through the book and look at the recipes and photos.
I really appreciate how the book is designed, first by season and then grouped by meals. For home cooks who struggle to put together a cohesive meal, this book is a great place to start if you want to develop that skill. And I love the fact that each meal grouping includes followup recipes to give you ideas for new ways to use leftovers, which is so helpful if you have picky eaters who don’t like leftovers.
Buy this book! In addition to everything else I mentioned, Julia Turshen writes great recipes. You can’t go wrong with this book regardless of your level of cooking experience. I own a lot of cookbooks, but in less than a week I can tell this is going to be one of my favorites.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 13, 2018To me, a sign of a great cookbook is one where you really get a feel for the author, not just of their cooking style, but of their warmth, values, and personality. This book is a testament and tribute to her friends, her wife (can they pls adopt me), family, and cultural heritage. I've tried several recipes all ready, and all were great. The picture is the applesauce cake. I had to substitute with a blend of whole wheat flour and grated fresh ginger, but the batter was very forgiving. Other great recipes have been the lamb burgers and broccoli rabe sandwiches. I really like the section on how to repurpose leftovers as I usually cook for myself and the ideas are so creative, simple, and delicious. No recipe is really difficult or ingredients obscure.
I was a little worried that this book would be too similar to her first, "Small Victories", as often times cookbook authors re-hash their recipes to rush their second release after their successful debut. This is definitely not the case. "Now and Again" complements "Small Victories". They have the same ethos of simple yet carefully thought out recipes that are mostly healthy for the body (and wallet!). I consider myself to be a fairly competent cook, but these recipes get me to think about ingredients in ways that I had never thought before. For instance, left over broccoli rabe from the sandwiches gets turned into a quick pesto. Highly recommend this cookbook. 2 years ago I bought copies of "Small Victories" for all of my relatives for Christmas. 1 year ago, I bought copies of "Feed the Resistance" for gifts. I'm probably going to do the same this year.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 17, 2018This is not a book about leftovers as much as it is about entertaining. Now and Again is structured by entire meal - about 3-4 dishes that can work for groups of 4-6. Worry not if you're only two, because the book also includes extremely clever tips for using leftovers.
I made an Italian lunch from the book, which included a baked ziti with ground turkey and creamy spinach mixed in, toasts with anchovy/garlic butter, and an arugula salad with pine nuts and lemon. The combination was a huge crowd pleaser, and the recipes were a joy - simple, no fuss, and no crazed steps. Very difficult to screw up.
At the end, about half the salad was leftover. Each meal has tips for leftovers, and in this case the author suggested I blend the arugula salad with garlic, olive oil, and salt to make pesto. And, well, it made a delicious pesto. From soggy salad to delicious pesto with hardly any effort - genius.
This book is brilliant in its simplicity. Easy to make yet impressive meals with no waste at the end. No need to think about what dishes to combine to form a meal - it's all planned out for you. I own about 30 cookbooks and this is my new favorite.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 2, 2021I was disappointed with this cookbook. It is very attractive, it's clever to arrange recipes by season and the recipes look delicious. So, the NOW part is great. HOWEVER, the AGAIN portion falls far short of expectations with only a few hints at the end of each section on using leftovers.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 6, 2018Appealing recipes & many good ideas
- Reviewed in the United States on October 12, 2020Finally! A cookbook elevates the leftovers that are inevitable (and often intentional!) from any big meal. Thank you Julia T, for addressing this so important topic with numerous new recipes for a wide range of leftovers — even wine! Would that every cookbook writer included info on how to transform leftovers, as well as proper storage and reheating tips. It's time to eat up ALL of our leftovers, people!!!
Also... this cook book is my new FAVORITE, because, in addition to the leftover recipes (Did I gush enough above??), it contains many wonderful recipes that I'm dying to try, with really readable writing, and gorgeous photos. This cookbook has it all. Thank you, Julia Turshen, I hope this book gets the attention it deserves. - J.O.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 17, 2018I am a huge fan of Julia's first cookbook, Small Victories, and it's now a go-to present for friends and family members of all cooking levels. I pre-ordered Now and Again and am once again thrilled. As always, her recipes are well-written and include thoughtful attention to detail for cooks who want to feed themselves and the folks they love without wasting food or money. I appreciated her creative interpretations of leftovers (e.g., the cauliflower and leftover salad soup) that encourage us to think a little differently or deliberately about what we cook. It's also always nice to know I'm not the only one who makes meatloaf just so she can have meatloaf sandwiches the next day!
Everything I have made so far (including the kale and pepita salad, the applesauce cake, Italian flag pasta bake, confetti meatloaf, eggs with coconut cilantro sauce, beef and zucchini meatballs) will stay in rotation for our household, and I'm looking forward to cooking through the rest of the book!

4.0 out of 5 stars Lovely book with some great recipes and an engaging tone of voice
I love the concept of reinventing leftovers to assemble another meal and have been enjoying dipping into this book regularly since I bought it. The recipes are simple but delicious and a good springboard for inspiration for other dishes

3.0 out of 5 stars The portions are huge
As an American based book the menus gave me new ideas to try something different. I have to say though that the portions are huge if you stick rigidly to the recipes. I had to adapt the recipes, though of course she wants leftovers in order to do the”again” bit

2.0 out of 5 stars Hmmmm
The recipes aren’t bad but may require some serious shopping to get everything you need to make the majority of them.
