About Mean Girls

"Mean Girls" is now a ferociously funny new musical from director Casey Nicholaw (Aladdin, The Book of Mormon), composer Jeff Richmond (“30 Rock,” “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt”), lyricist Nell Benjamin (Legally Blonde) and book writer Tina Fey (“30 Rock,” Bossypants).

Cady Heron may have grown up on an African savanna, but nothing prepared her for the wild and vicious ways of her strange new home: suburban Illinois. How will this naïve newbie rise to the top of the popularity pecking order? By taking on The Plastics, a trio of lionized frenemies led by the charming but ruthless Regina George. But when Cady devises a plan to end Regina’s reign, she learns the hard way that you can’t cross a Queen Bee without getting stung.

Produced by Lorne Michaels, Stuart Thompson, Sonia Friedman, and Paramount Pictures, "Mean Girls" gets to the hilarious heart of what it means to be a true friend, a worthy nemesis, and above all, a human being.

More information about Mean Girls

Get in, loser — you’re going to the theater. In Tina Fey’s Tony Award-nominated stage adaptation of her smash hit film, “Mean Girls” rule the school at North Shore High. And Cady Heron, the new girl in town, learns that the hard way. When her zoologist parents pick up from Africa to settle down in Evanston, Ill., a culture-shocked Cady befriends Janis Sarkisian and Damian Hubbard — who persuade Cady to take down the trio of Plastics, led by Queen Bee Regina George. But their plan to uproot the “Apex Predator” suddenly backfires when Cady ventures to the dark side.

Get ready for the ultimate world burn when Regina George finds herself compromised by Cady and must do whatever it takes to get herself back on top. Oh, and don’t forget to wear pink — or else you totally can’t sit with us.

What to watch for

Tina Fey wanted to be the one to adapt “Mean Girls” for the stage, but she wasn’t exactly sure what a book writer did at first. She even researched the qualities of a second-act opening number on Wikipedia.

Tina Fey is married to the show’s songwriter Jeff Richmond, who says they’ve always wanted to do Broadway. “We’re theater people who got detoured,” he admits.

Following the musical’s out-of-town tryouts in Washington, DC, the creative team reconvened to make changes and additions, including adding Damian’s show-stopping tap number “Stop” as the second act opener.

Though some aspects of the story were updated for 2018, most of the iconic “Mean Girls” moments remain. October 3 is still our favorite day, and don’t worry, Gretchen is still trying to make “fetch” happen.
