Meets all the basic needs of a Grad Student
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I went with Dell because my previous laptop was of the same brand and it did not trouble me and helped me sail through undergrad. This time it was a Mac vs Windows choice for me but I went with Windows because of its better compatibility with enterprise software which would come handy in Grad School. My initial purchase from Best Buy turned out to be faulty and had to be replaced, a process which was smooth overall. Been using the machine for over few days and it does all the basic stuff well. Even though it is i7 8th Gen and 16GB RAM, I don't think the processing and speed machine justifies it. Even the battery life is a bit disappointing. Nonetheless, it is bang for the buck just over 1000 bucks with the features it provides. Detailed review after extensive review after a month or so will be posted.

Beware of the battery drainage after 1.5 years
||Posted . Owned for 1 year when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I bought this laptop in September of 2018 for my college use. I would say this laptop is amazing, the specs, only if you can have power connected to it 24/7. No issues for the whole 1 year but after the warranty expired the battery capacity dropped rapidly. My battery charge capacity has dropped from 35,105mWh to 16,963 mWh in just a 1.5-year time frame with moderate use. I have bought two of these models, and both facing the same problem at the same time. The battery drains in about 15 minutes if I'm using it in a classroom. A friend of mine has a laptop (different brand) which he bought at about the same time I did and has no issue with it, whereas I'm sitting close to the wall ports all the time with my charger out. I expected the battery to perform a little better and not dying this soon. I don't expect it to be the best, but at least get me through my classes.

tiny item, big storage
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.two terabyte hard drive, very portable and light and comes in bright colors so it's easy to find on a messy desk. carrying case is high quality and durable, has elastic straps that keep it from opening all the way so when you unzip it, the hard drive doesn't tumble out. Big enough to fit the actual hard drive along with the cable and an extra USB thumb drive too. I now have reliable and portable data backup. very happy with my purchase.

Very Fast!!!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I was looking to buy a powerful windows laptop and was considering a 8 gen cpu Dell XPS 13 with 512 PCI-e SSD and 16 gigs of ram. The XPS quickly jumps into the $1700 price range with those specs but a Inspiron 7000 with those exact specs (was on sale at the time also) was only $1170 after taxes, so I figured could try this out and if it was not as good as the XPS just would exchange, well quality build and performance wise it is just as good. This laptop has a very steady aluminium build that is not slippery on the surface like some others, the hinges are rock solid, very stiff with no movement while typing. Screen is good also but no way near like a XPS 13 infinty or MacBook when it comes to the color dept, touch screen is very responsive along with the touch pad. Speakers are average, I just keep it on 100% while watching YouTube vids, typing experience is good and is back-lighted. Decent amount of ports for a ultrabook, 2 type A USB and SD card reader are getting tough to find these days!. Boot time are 3-5 secs with Windows Hello face recognition enabled, very fast machine that outperforms 7th gen cpu by 40%. I video edited, photo edit and compiled code all were done very fast, even tried some gaming with the Doom and Dota 2, both can run on med settings. fan noise is acceptable while doing heavy loads. Con: Only getting around 6-7 hours realistic battery life (that's why only 4 stars) and no way to turn off adaptive dimming, bloatware program called SmartByte will reduce your WiFi speed if you choose to enable it. In conclusion, if you need a powerful system then this is the best bang for your buck.

Love this computer overall
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I've had several major computer issues recently, so I have had a Macbook Pro, HP Spectre, and now this Dell Inspiron within the past 8 months. Without getting into the Apple/Windows debate, this has been my favorite of the three. Pros: great computer for the price - I got the specs I wanted for much cheaper than the other computers. You can use an SD card to increase storage if needed. The value was a priority for me, so this was a great fit. This computer is easy to use and very fast. I run a lot of applications at one time, and it hasn't slowed down a bit. I've had a few Microsoft related issues, but the computer itself has been great and I've had fewer software update/Microsoft compatibility issues than my HP had. Quieter than the Spectre. I have had no hardware or software issues with this computer and it seems to be very reliable so far (I've only had it about 2 months, however). Easy to use and the installed software support seems to be much better than HP. Cons: I have had horrible experience with Dell customer service (related to Microsoft update issues, not this computer itself), and it was particularly miserable to communicate with them. The other cons are all relatively small things - It's a bit bulkier than the HP Spectre, but I'm guessing this is the price you pay for still having most of the ports you would want (this is a pro for me). I also saw complaints about how loud this computer is when the fan is on, and it's louder than my Mac but I actually find it to be much quieter than the Spectre. The battery life is not ideal and definitely the worst of the 3 computers, although it hasn't been too limiting so far. Lastly, this is a small thing, but the power cord is 3-pronged and you can't add an extension to the power block. Overall, the pros are a much larger priority for me than the cons - would suggest this computer!

Q: QuestionWhat's the battery life? Is there fan noise or overheating? Is it fully upgradeable?
Asked by Kyron.
- A:Answer Battery life is super short. I got an average of 4 hours which is definitely not acceptable for an ultrabook. There is a fan and the noise is certainly noticeable.

Q: QuestionA customer at Best Buy suggested that the Dell laptops are not reliable and that many people have problems with them and was steering me toward the Lenovo 720 instead of this Dell. Thoughts?
Asked by Urbanxplorer.
- A:Answer I decided to go with this Dell instead of the Yoga. Better specs and aesthetics. Thanks

Q: QuestionHow does this unit compare to Dell Inspiron 7000? To XPS 13? I heard in BB store yesterday that the Xps has the mobile i7 - that is a drawbck for me
Asked by ChampagneSunset.
- A:Answer Watch the Mobile Tech Review reviews on YouTube. Lisa does a nice job of analyzing everything out there. The big difference between this and the 7000 is that the 7000’s case is plastic and the 7373 is aluminum. That and any CPU, RAM, SSD spec differences between specific configurations. If you are looking at the XPS with i7-7y75 processor you can compare the available benchmarks to see the difference. Passmark’s scores are 8290 for the inspirion’s cpu and 3789 for the XPS. If you need processing power in a 2-in-1 the Inspiron is the better bet. Of course you give up battery capacity and there is fan noise when it is working moderately to hard. The bios allows you to run fewer CPU cores and I would expect that would increase battery life and/or you have four power modes to choose from to adjust power/battery life balance.

Q: QuestionThe SSD interface is listed as SATA. Is that right? Dell web seems to say that is PCie.
Asked by AlexB.
- A:Answer Mine came with a SK Hynix SC311 SATA 256GB drive. It is definitely SATA. It fits into the M.2 slot on the motherboard, which also supports PCIe drives. I have another recent Dell laptop which also came with a SATA M.2 drive and I was able to swap it out for a 1TB PCIe NVMe drive with no problems. I plan on doing the same thing on this laptop as prices drop. From what I have read, the 512GB version of this laptop DOES have a PCIe drive, but the 256GB versions have SATA.

Q: QuestionHow good is the keyboard, does it bend and dip in? My current Lenovo does this and I would really like a new laptop without this defect.
Asked by Wyleam.
- A:Answer This is one of the better keyboards I have typed on. It's quiet and flat. The backlit keyboard has 3 settings like most backlit keyboards and the keys are black with white letters, not gray/white. The keyboard does not bend in. I had 2 Lenovo's and both boards died right after the warranty expired. They conveniently stopped making them...after 2 years.

Q: QuestionThe specs say: "Built-in card reader for simple photo transfer Supports SD and MMC memory card formats. Additional microSD card slot on the display." Any clue what that means? I've held one and don't see any mSD slot.
Asked by Nitpicky.
- A:Answer Unless it is really well hidden, there is no micro SD card slot on the display. There is a standard SD slot so that is accurate.
