About

Johnny Marr found worldwide fame in the 80s with cult British band The Smiths. One of Britain's most famous guitarists, Marr has played in a number of successful bands such as Modest Mouse and The Cribs as well as becoming a renowned session musician.

After playing in a few bands and performing the odd solo gig in his mid-teens, Marr formed The Smiths with a poet and singer called Morrissey at the age of 18. They wrote the songs together and the band that formed in 1982 went on to become one of the truly iconic British acts of the 80s. Hit albums such as the self-titled The Smiths in 1984, Meat is Murder in 1985, The Queen is Dead in 1986 and finally Strangeways - Here We Come in 1987 became albums that helped define the era. Their music helped bring the guitar sound back to the mainstream, and their songs proudly stood as a musical backlash against the synth-pop chart music of the time. In 1987, creative differences led to the band splitting up, but thankfully their five-year run of huge success and critically acclaimed albums had already established Johnny Marr as one of the most influential songwriters and performers of the decade.

Marr stayed incredibly busy after The Smiths' time was up, playing sessions with the likes of Sir Paul McCartney and both recording and touring with established bands such as The Pretenders and The The. Essentially, from 1987 until 2002 Johnny Marr worked with everyone who was anyone in the UK music industry. Collaborations included working with Billy Bragg, Talking Heads, The Pet Shop Boys, Kirsty MacColl and Black Grape. He also made a special one-off appearance playing with Oasis in 2001, as well as working with them on some album tracks in the studio.

In more recent years he has toured and played with Modest Mouse extensively, including supporting R.E.M. on their US tour. Johnny is also a member of occasional super-group Seven Worlds Collide, which is made up from members of Radiohead, Crowded House and Pearl Jam. Together they have recorded a number of tracks to raise money for Oxfam. He also plays with The Healers and The Cribs, touring whenever he can. His solo album, The Messenger, was released through Warner Brothers in 2013 and Marr continues to be one of the very best live and studio artists.

Great time with a musical storyteller

by Jerbob on 10/28/23The Regent Theater - Los Angeles

I didn't know what to expect at this event. Just wanted to see Johnny in person. Ended up being a hell of a fun time. He talked about the book and his guitars, but he also gave us a glimpse into his songwriting style, his playing technique, his legendary tone, and much more. It was really special just to sit in a room with one of the greats while he told stories and played many of his most well known riffs, as well as some more obscure stuff. Q&A was nice, too. He really took the time to give honest answers and even played some tunes based on the questions he was asked.

    Amazing Show

by Daring Rant on 10/28/23The Regent Theater - Los Angeles

Johnny was charming, sharp, and the right balance of sweet (asked a boy that asked him to play How Soon is Now if he played because he was going to bring him on stage) and biting ("is that really the question you want to ask?")

    Johnny Marr is a Genius!

by Jervis Bullwinkle on 10/28/23The Regent Theater - Los Angeles

As a huge fan of Johnny Marr and his magical guitar playing, this evening was everything I hoped for. Even though this was a book talk for Marr’s Guitars, there was plenty of guitar playing. He is also a completely charming and engaging storyteller. Came out an even bigger fan! Also the book is gorgeous!

Perfect venue, lovely book, and amazing artist

by DetailJunkie on 10/27/23Warsaw - Brooklyn

We have always loved seeing shows at the Warsaw, and this In Conversation event with Johnny Marr did not disappoint! We had excellent seats with unobstructed views, and it was truly an amazing experience to hear Johnny Marr talk about the book, his life, and of course his guitars. The book is beautifully done, and I highly recommend it to any fans or guitar enthusiasts.

Johnny Marr @ The Ford Theater Hollywood, CA

by HollywoodRocker55 on 6/1/19Ford Theatres - Los Angeles

What a great night! Venue was beautiful, a very intimate place to see a guitar legend and his amazing band. Easy parking, great food options, and the staff could not have been friendlier or more helpful. The theater itself was a castle-themed outdoor venue with excellent sight-lines from anywhere. Lighting and sound/acoustics were excellent. Johnny and his band were at the top of their game. I had seen them earlier this year at the Theater at the Ace Hotel in downtown LA. Setlist was great, all the big hits and music from the new album Call The Comet. Johnny's playing and interaction with his very devoted audience was superb. His backing band are all highly-skilled musicians and an extremely "tight" unit.It was the last show of his US tour, so he brought out his lifelong friend Billy Duffy from The Cult to play the final cuple of encore songs. A fantastic experience. I can't wait to see Johnny on his next tour and I will definitely be back to the Ford Theater.

Johnny Marr is a Living Legend

by Vic on 5/24/19Ford Theatres - Los Angeles

From the moment he confidently swaggers on stage, you know the audience is in for an amazing, life-affirming show from this Guitar God. He’s also got the voice, charisma, showmanship, and most importantly the songs to make his concerts a must-see, brag-to-your-friends (and eventually your kids and grandkids) experience!!
