Big Sound, Extra Bass in a Compact Design

When I opened this tiny speaker, I didn’t expect much of a chromatic sound. But when I turned it on and paired it with my phone, I was surprised to hear rich sound waves of varying frequencies—and bass. It is very small at approximately 3 ¼” w x 2 3/8” d x 2 ¼”h and is boxed with a strap and a micro USB cable. The mono speaker is even smaller at 1 ½”; however, it still manages to deliver a full range of tones with very little harmonic distortion, and with way more clarity than one would expect from a speaker four times plus its size.
Main features of this product include Bluetooth, an Audio-In Stereo Mini Jack, a Long Battery Life, and the product’s Water-Resistant Design. Initially, a full charge was reached in a matter of minutes and subsequent repeated charging occurred quick. There also does not appear to be connection complications with the Bluetooth like I have experienced with other devices--it pairs almost instantly. I tried several different products by different manufacturers and in each case pairing the devices were effortless and the communication range extended over 30 feet. The speaker is also equipped with a microphone which allows it to be used as a speaker phone, and which also has great 2-way clarity within the communication range of up to 32’. When busy and needing to communicate on the phone, this is smaller and easier to carry from room to room than my phone.
I’ve held on to my original iPod because I burned decades of my CD collection to its 160 GB hard drive to not only store my music, but to have the data to listen to without the use of the internet. Sometimes earphones are an irritant when working and I wanted to see how the iPod would work with the mini speaker. I connected the speaker and the iPod with an audio cord and it works great. The volume is somewhat limited with this type of sound connection as opposed to a higher, greater volume when using the Bluetooth capabilities; still the music is very harmonious, balanced and pleasant. The speaker enables me to listen to all my favorites at my personal workstation or where ever I wish to listen to them without the use of ear pods or the internet.
The battery life almost doubles the battery life of any of my larger more dynamic sounding speakers. When using the speaker in the Bluetooth mode with all inputs sealed, the speaker’s design makes it water resistant. It is not completely waterproof, but water resistant enough to make it a great choice for the beach or pool side, especially when you wish to travel light. Weighing just under 6 ozs., this is a great little speaker for my workstation, office, kitchen, or on the go; and it surprises me that I like it as much as I do and that I have found so many uses for it that fit my lifestyle.

Lots of sound for such a little speaker. It was perfect for my son to stream his music. He loves the colors and the string handle.
I only wish there was a way to improve the charging port (on lots of electronics) to be more kids friendly.

Let me start by saying WOW, this little tiny speaker sounds this good! I was very impressed how rich the sound this little thing can produce and is pretty loud too. It is so small you can take it almost anywhere and it fits in your hand, it also comes with a lanyard that you can use to hang it. Speaker has 4 buttons on the top the Power/Paring, Play/Pause and the Up/Down volume buttons. On the side is a rubber cover that protects the micro USB socket for charging, and the AUX port. Paring is simple hold down the paring button, you will see the light bilking under the front grill, on your phone under you Bluetooth setting look for the speaker and pair it, once paired light will stay solid.
In the package it comes with small iconic instruction manual, the speaker, lanyard and the micro USB cable. The only downside that I found was that it did not come with an A/C adapter, I used the one that came with my S9+ so far so good. I also used a longer micro USB cable because the one included is too small for my taste. This speaker is rated IPX5 which is water splash not proof so don’t try to submerge this thing in the water. If you’re looking for small, portable, lightweight, good sound at a budget price this little thing at $35 would do the work I was very impressed, Sony did a good job on this one definitely recommend this.
Pros:
Sound quality
Size & Weight
Portability
Battery Life
Ease of Use
Cons:
Small Charging Cable
No A/C adapter

It’s another SONY musical magic trick

SONY SRS-XB01. Isn’t SONY supposed to play by the same rules of physics like everyone else? In my hand I’m holding a speaker that’s about the size (3.25” x 2.4” x2.25”) of my computer mouse. It’s filling up my family room with richly textured, loud, enjoyable, musical sound. This is nuts, but great fun.
Only four controls on the top of this 5.65 oz Boom Box. Yeah, looking at it and saying Boom Box is hysterical, but you aren’t hearing it like I am. It’s all real. The raised controls are POWER (hold for 3 seconds for BT connect), a music CONTROL button (various stop, play, pause, skip commands), and the two VOLUME buttons. On my black-on-black speaker, they are near impossible to see but easy to feel. There is nothing missing here but the size, weight, and, of course, the music, which you already have on your phone. Yep. It’s a Boom Box. A really, really small Boom Box.
Bluetooth connection was immediate. It reaches across a large room and is indicated by the only tiny LED visible under the speaker grill. Hidden under the rubberized door is a Stereo Mini Jack for devices that don’t have BT. Under that same door is a micro-USB port. SONY suggests a 6 hour battery life. The charge is provided with a micro-USB adapter cable (cable included, but without charging wart). It’s water-resistant (IPX5). Instructions are delivered by ICONS, only.
I don’t know how SONY accomplishes these sound tricks, but they do, and they are wonderful sounding. This XB01 has decent sound quality at all volume levels, but the bass doesn’t match the rest of the range until you get the volume louder. This is not unusual, and it’s why “loudness contour” was invented. You simply need to use an EQ setting on your phone to boost the bass at lower volumes. Music expands and blooms out of the SONY XBO1 as you increase the sound level. This is a very small speaker. Expectations need to be reasonable, but this sound is far above expectations. If it were only a trick, I wouldn’t be recommending this SONY so highly, but the XB01 does a nice job with music you want to share with friends at the party. I’m not sure whether they’ll laugh from surprise or just applaud.

A:Hi, leaving the speaker plugged-in all the time may affect the battery life of the speaker. Please refer to the links below for more information about charging the speaker. Thanks! ^Ron

A:There is a short beep when powered on but a not disruptive. If you connect it to your phone for a music app, there will be a louder tone when you receive a call...still not disruptive in an office atmosphere.
A:Hi, Muggs! The Bluetooth device has a transmission operating range of approximately 30 feet (10 meters) within a line of sight but will vary depending on the surrounding conditions.
NOTE: Communication range will vary according to whether walls or other obstacles are located between the devices, the material used in the intervening walls, the presence of Radio Frequency (RF) interference and other environmental conditions, and the type of software being used, if applicable.

A:Yes. By pressing the play/pause/call button twice quickly during playback, the XB01 will skip to the beginning of the next song. I found it necessary to wait a second or two until the next song began playing before skipping to the next song. If it registers your presses too close together (3 presses), it may think you want to go back to the beginning of the current song.
