Frankly, prom is a ridiculous concept. People at school treat it like its a test run for a wedding, complete with ‘promposals’. That’s not even mentioning the dresses, which look like Disney vomited tulle and sparkles onto the nearest mannequin. Sam wants nothing to do with it.
Except for the tiny fact that she’s been in love with her best friend Tash since they were ten years old, and Tash dreams of a perfect, romantic prom. Sam had given up hope, until she spotted The Suit in a shop window. Sleek, androgynous, and flat out cool—but also way out of Sam's price range.
But if she can earn the money for the suit, then surely the suit is all she needs to finally admit how she feels and see they both enjoy the perfect prom.
im actually crying!!! this book might only be 36 pages long but its 36 pages of perfection!!!! wlw friends to lovers, with a bi love interest, and the ABSOLUTE CUTEST CONFESSION IM DYING!!!!!!!! my only wish is that this had been longer
i could do w/o the slight i'm not like other girls from sam but im gonna chalk it up to her being a butch lesbian and anyway SAPPHIC BEST FRIENDS TO LOVERS
Any story that starts with “will you GOAT to prom with me” has got me hooked. The main character may think that’s an awful pickup line, but I’m all over that shit :P This was a totally approachable piece of contemporary YA f/f with a happy ending, relatable and familiar characters, and girls in formal wear looking stunning.
The main character of Prom and Other Hazards has been in love with her best friend for years. She doesn’t come out when the best friend comes out as bi, because it’s in the context of the friend telling her about the great time she had kissing…. some other girl, on vacation. We still need stories where teens are afraid to come out to their crushes because it’s a super common and relatable experience but it’s nice to read a YA where the fear is just “what if she doesn’t like me that way” instead of “what if she doesn’t like girls that way.” Sometimes it’s nice when the stressors in an LGBTQ+ character’s life are things that happen to straight people, too.
In order to afford a suit rental for prom, the protagonist ends up working for the rental place, and I loved the zany depictions of her teenage male customers. I wonder if it’s really like that during prom season at a suit rental shop? The author made it sound totally believable.
It’s a well-structured short story, with a plot twist that threw me for a loop exactly where it would have if this was a teen movie. Luckily, I knew this was from a LGBTQ+ publisher and I was therefore guaranteed a happy ending! I enjoyed watching the girls conquer the plot.

okay I just have one problem with this short story it's that's it's too short 😂 I would have loved to read more of it, bi MC which is not so often that I see it, best friends to lovers and it was really cute. Definitely don't regret reading this one 🙂
I thought this was sweet. Sam has been in love with her best friend Tash for years. She wants to ask Tash to the prom but is scared to and she's not out, although Tash has told Sam that Tash is bi. This story goes through the teen torment of prom and dating while lesbian and in the closet. Told from Sam's perspective, we see all her turmoil and her realization about what and who she is. Even though I liked it, or maybe because I did, I was disappointed when the story ended at around 65% of the book. I was really hoping for the next day after the prom. It lost a star for the 35% or so of ads at the end of the ebook because it felt misleading.
This is a really cute, sweet story. It's mainly pretty fluffy, just a nice little story about a girl finding the right way to ask her best friend out and give her the most magical prom night ever.
Although the premise isn't anything really new, it's the writing style which made me love this story. It's funny and smart and features an excellent main character. Sam is a delightful narrator, and it's easy to see why the girls like each other so much. They're a perfect pair.
There's really no angst or drama to be found. The side characters are fun, even Tash's "date of convenience," who ends up being a bit of a surprise. Kieran, the tux shop employee, is a fun replacement for the typical fairy godmother. Even the girls' classmates are a nice bunch, if a bit idealistic.
If you're looking for a fun, sweet book that will make you smile and say, "aww," this is the one for you. Very cute!

Prom and Other Hazards is about Sam, who wants to ask out her best friend Tasha. Sam has liked Tasha for a number of years now but is afraid to reveal her feelings. She then comes across a suit that she thinks is perfect for her to wear to prom. Problem is Sam can't afford it and she doesn't know how she's going to ask Tasha to prom.
This was a sweet short story of a teenager learning to be comfortable in her own skin. I always enjoy a story where it involves best friends, at least one of them liking the other, and they end up together. I thought the author wrote a satisfying ending.
This was such a cute short story. I am so happy that I read Prom and Other Hazards. It's about prom (duh haha) and it's so !!! because it's prom season or it was but either way - it's so great to see more prom stories and I especially enjoyed this one because it had an f/f couple!
Keep your eye out for this story and I think this is part of an anthology of other short stories? I'm not sure if every single one is a prom story but!! I'm hoping I get to read the others too because this one left a good impression *Wink*
The friends to lovers angle is beautifully played out. The author manages to convey a wealth of experience and shared memories in a story less than fifty pages long, and builds a sweet, lovely romance between the two girls. Sam’s entrance at the prom was romantic without being cheesy, and the only thing Sam changed in the whole book was her outfit. Not her personality, not who she was. She stayed true to herself from page one to the end, and Tash was delightfully patient through the whole thing.
This is an adorable YA romance well worth the read. And while it isn’t exactly a holiday romance, it still has that happy, sugary, and cheerful atmosphere that suits the season for those needing a quick pick-me-up of fluff.
Such a cute little YA story about a girl trying to take her best friend to prom! Also, the most relatable quote ever:
Pizza was simple. Pizza was all she could handle in that moment.
The story itself wasn't that special, but since it's only 35 pages and it's cute and it will fill your (sapphic) heart with joy you really don't have an excuse not to read it, imho.
4.5 stars I enjoyed this sweet story of teenager Sam and her secret love for best friend Tash. As she makes plans for prom night she is a mix of hope and fear and I felt that along with her. It is well written and kept my attention, as Sam was a likeable character dealing with a universal dilemma. Should she come out to her friend and confess her feelings thus risking their existing friendship? This lovely romance was the perfect way to while away an afternoon, dreaming of happy ever afters. I was given this ARC free by Inked Rainbow Reads in return for an honest review.
It's cute the writing at the start is a bit teenager tries too hard but she eases into it later yes I'm adding a short novella to my gr yes it will count towards my challenge
Loved this short FF teen romance! Read in one sitting in a couple hours (1-2hrs.) >.< Sam has been in love with Tash since they met as kids. Now older, and prom approaching, will Sam "prompose" to Tash, asking her to be her prom date/go to prom with her as a date & not as friends? Are daffodils as lucky as Tash says, and the 2 friends become more & change their relationship status? 5 ★s (5 stars)! Short romance. Clean read suitable for pre-teens & teens (and adults too!)
