1 / Prep

The better the wood prep, the better the final result. Minwax Preparation products are the first step to ensure your wood surfaces show their most beautiful colors and smoothest finishes. Start with Minwax Pre-Stain to prevent streaks and blotches by penetrating the wood to promote uniform acceptance of water-based stains and helps control the effects of grain raise.

2 / Stain

If desired, apply stain such as Minwax Wood Finish Oil-Based Penetrating Stain or Water- Based Color Stains to bare wood surfaces following label directions. Surface must be dry and free of wax, grease, polish, any foreign matter, or old finishes in poor condition. Sand to a smooth, uniform surface and remove dust. Let dry completely.

3 / Protect

Wait at least 24 hours before applying Polycrylic Finish over wood stain. Stir well before and regularly during use. Do not shake. Apply a thin coat of Polycrylic Finish with a high-quality synthetic bristle brush. Apply in one direction with the grain. Do not over brush. Let dry at least 2 hours then sand with very fine sandpaper (220 grit) to ensure an even finish and proper adhesion of additional coats. Remove all dust.

Smooth, consistent, but can be tricky

Smooth, consistent, but can be tricky
I am constructional professional and use a variety of application-driven finishes in my personal and professional life. I recently built a range-hood for a residential kitchen remodel that required a smooth, flat finish. Minmax's Ultra-Flat Polycrylic seems like a reasonable choice. The prep process is simple- dependent upon your substrate; in my case, right over latex paint that had been drying/curing for 2 days. Application was straight-forward with a note- water-based clear finishes afford very little working time before they tack. For a large surface- particularly a large, flat surface, you have to work quickly and methodically and know when to not over-brush/roll. Once the bristles or nap start to stick/resist, you're done! I find that Minwax finishes do a solid job of self-leveling/smoothing so once you feel the drag, stop and let the product lay itself down. You get some inherent assistance by formulation since it applies kind of cloudy/milky out of the can and turns more translucent, to ultimately transparent as curing/drying takes place. As you can ideally see in the project pictures, after three coats, the finish is smooth and homogenous (even though over intentionally semi-rustic surfaces). Polycrylic has some "build" to it, so if you like it to look like a coating as much as sheen, you're good to go- with more coats making for more of a film-feel. The film-build can present a challenge if you're tape-masking. Be careful not to peel your finish off by timing your pull correctly, or carefully scoring transition lines. Clean-up is super simple since its water-based; a little soap, water, and work and brushes/rollers/tools come perfectly clean. However- and the reason for the one star ding- as you can hopefully also see in the pictures, I am not sure I agree with "Ultra Flat." It generates more of a matte finish. A true flat clear- especially "ultra" flat- is exceedingly difficult to achieve and may require some mechanical abrasion/scuffing to really knock down sheen. All-in-all, I am pleased with the product and its performance thus far.

    Very quick drying 👍,
Everyone recommends foam brush? I understand that comments need to work with the propensity of failure by those lacking deductive reasoning! To use a cheap brush would give undesirable results, but a high quality soft tip, 3” brush is the best for application. The trick is to put enough on quickly, and never go back over a previously brushed area, even if it’s been only a minute. Slow brush speed! Light pressure (don’t try to bend the bristles past the softened tips). I must say that this is my recommendation for horizontal applications. For vertical you will be mandated to apply many thin coats! If you apply thin coats and sand between, you will need to force yourself to SAND LIGHTLY, else you will be taking two steps forward and one back. After your project is dry. You can sand any little high spots that the hand can feel, with a flat pad sander with 1000 grit paper, without affecting the visual appearance on satin finish. This finish will continue to cure for weeks, so be patient and wait a month before polishing with 2000 grit 3M and a buffer if that’s what your planning to do. If you have the self control to use this product correctly, it will provide a clear, hard and unbelievably smooth finish that is very nice. I use it on cornhole boards and it proved to be the perfect finish for slide. The cornhole association gives instruction for establishing appropriate bag slide by placing a bag at end of finished board, lift the end of board until the bag begins to slide on its own, and measure how high the board was raised to initiate the movement. This finish provided perfect results as the bag began to move at 22”.

I’m incredibly impressed with the Clear Polycrylic Water-Based Protective Finish in Satin! It gave my cabinets a beautiful, professional-looking finish that really enhanced their appearance. The satin sheen is just the right amount of gloss, giving them a smooth, elegant look.

Not only does it make the cabinets look fantastic, but it also provides a hard, durable protective finish that can stand up to the abuse I put on them daily. It resists scratches and wear, keeping everything looking great. Easy to apply and dries quickly too. Highly recommend this product for anyone looking to protect and elevate their wood projects!
