Marcus King faces heartache, addiction, and mental health head-on in his music. Pain quakes below the vibrato of his voice, and his delivery weighs heavy with booze-drenched regrets and mistakes in lonely hotels. The GRAMMY® nominated fourth generation musician from Greenville, SC, started playing guitar at 8-years-old following in the footsteps of his guitarist Father and Grandpa. Logging thousands of miles on the road as "The Marcus King Band," he established himself with unparalleled performance prowess. During 2020, he linked up with Dan Auerbach and cut his solo debut El Dorado, garnering a GRAMMY® Award nomination for "Best Americana Album." Between headlining venues, he performed alongside Chris Stapleton, Greta Van Fleet, and Nathanial Rateliff in addition to gracing the bills of Stagecoach and more. He has launched various mental health initiatives, including a guitar auction collaboration with MusiCares. Now, his 2024 album Mood Swings feels like the moment of baptism when water washes away a life's worth of sins and degradation and all that's left is a revived, yet still real-as-hell primal scream. It's as if King strained raw soul straight from his gut up through that broken heart and on to the record under the watchful eye of Rick Rubin. Emphasizing his vocals front-and-center more than ever before, the trusty guitar he's so often associated with plays the sideman this time around (though there's no shortage of impressive shredding). For as dark as everything seemed, you can't help but feel a sense of hope in the power of Marcus's voice.
Marcus king is incredible! Amazing guitar player, singer, and song writer. His live shows are a 10!
One of the best rock guitarists out there right now. Great energy. Wonderful musicianship. Wide diversity of style and sound. Sound wasn't great. We had problems hearing the keys most times. Guitars were sometimes way too loud. Looked like there were some equipment problems throughout the night. Overall, a great time.
Yes, Marcus is a great guitar player, but he is also an amazing musician, songwriter and showman who seamlessly crosses genres and his passion for music bleeds out of every pore. If you love music you need to see him live.
This was the third time we've seen Marcus and it was the best yet! The Blue Note is a great venue and the Marcus King Band was excellent.
Marcus King is a terrific guitar player without a doubt. This show definitely showcased his chops and those of his co-lead guitarist. They delved into jazz several times. which really kept things interesting. The only reason I felt this wasn't up to the level of I expected was the quality of his band when they got their chance to solo. The keyboard player shined on the B3 but didn't seem up to the same skill level when tasked with a call and response solo with Marcus. Similar weakness seemed to be displayed during the saxophone and flute solos. It was as if the musicians were unsure of where to go with their time to shine and it tended to drag the performance down. Highlights were definitely the dual lead harmony on Whipping Post and the audience participation he elicited during his own well known tunes. I look forward to seeing him and his band again but I hope they are a little more on next time.
Awesome Show - Going to Second Show in 4 Days!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
One of the best shows I’ve ever been too. Marcus is the man.
Marcus King is a huge talent! He has a great voice and is a fantastic guitar player too. The band is awesome too. All this made for a really enjoyable concert! I’ll go see him again next time around no doubt.
The performances were great! The venue is smaller but really nice.
They say "If it's too loud you're too old"I and others must be too old. Just about the entire row in front of us left because of the sound mix. It was LOUD. My ears were ringing two days later. Most of the time when Markus was talking into the microphone it sounded garbled and couldn't understand anything he was saying. I've been to a lot of concerts that have had different quality sound. I know Markus King is great and his band is great. I listen to them a lot. This sound mix sounded like loud sound confusion.
