Newer style of shelves are not greatLauraI have several iterations of these shelves as I add through the years. I bought the bulk of my shelving second hand which I think speaks to the longevity of the product. While I understand and appreciate the latest style has metal attachments and no adhesive for sustainability reasons, the metal pieces pry out of the shelf quite easily. In the first batch of the new shelves I bought I returned one because the metal bracket was in the bottom of the box and off the shelf. I have one new shelf in my current system that I wanted to adjust but can’t yet because when I try to remove the wood separates from the metal and I haven’t been able to figure out how to get the metal to separate from the metal pegs. The new shelves will not be able to last, please review this style of attachment! 1
IVAR is a great system - I miss the corner shelvingAnneThe IVAR system's offering has been dramatically paired down which I miss even though I didn't buy most of the fancy upgrades. This is very utilitarian and affordable. Make sure you hear the "click" when installing a shelf. 5
Good productRamonGood product5
VERY HAPPY WITH THE QUALITYAngelaHAPPY WITH THE QUALITY OF THE IVAR SHELVES AND THE QUALITY IS ON POINT HOWEVER THEY ARE ON EXPENSIVE SIDE NOT SO HAPPY WITH THE PRICE OF THE IVAR SHELF'S HOWEVER IT IS STILL A VERY NICE SHELVING UNIT5
Great quality and styleAlysonWe are so happy with our IVAR purchase! We bought two shelf units for our garage to organize toys, plant materials, etc. The wood is beautiful and all the storage options make it incredibly functional.5
Works, but …TeresaThe metal bracket has a tendency of coming unset. Make sure you know where you want it because, if you try to undo it, you are most likely going to pull out the metal bracket from the wood. 3
Great SystemJimWe had to wait a little while for the product to come back in stock, but we are using the system for pantry shelves...and it is fantastic. Just clear coated the the beautiful wood and put it together!5
IVAR shelfJanetteI love Ivar products, but some metal trims came off easily. I have returned them to the IKEA Return Dept. Got another IVAR shelves. 4
Pine storage shelves JeanneVery sturdy. Perfect for storage shelves. The unit itself needs to be supported or wobbles. But very affordable, and certainly worth the money.5
Great shelving PatI really like the smooth surface of the wood, great for storage and easy to put together 5
Shelves break due to really bad bracket designMarkAs many others have noted, the metal brackets on these shelves are awful. Please bring back the old reliable plastic brackets or redesign the metal brackets. Just the act of pulling the metal pegs out of the brackets (where they are stored before assembly) can cause the bracket to pull out of the wood, permanently damaging the shelf. And if you want to re-arrange the shelves, you are even more likely to cause damage. Furthermore, the new shelf design makes it much more difficult, if not impossible, to customize the shelf width and reuse the brackets.1
Very Functional - All Pieces Used TogetherKimI really love this product. I assembled it with the help of a YouTube video (I refer to YouTube for all assemblies). At first I thought it would be wobbly but once I added the crossbar it is very stable. I use it in my pantry to house my small kitchen appliances to keep the my small counter top clear. Perfect, inexpensive solution!5

Really miss the old shelves with the gray plastic fastenersJenniferI've broken so many of the new shelves with the metal fasteners. Probably 5-6 in the past couple years. Even after I've learned to be more delicate with removing the shelf from the pegs, I always --without fail-- break one of the new shelves when I move things around. Ikea - please bring back the old shelves! I am now incredibly hesitant to buy IVAR components new; and when I need more shelves, I'm actively scouring Facebook Marketplace rather than paying full price for a shelf that WILL undoubtedly break in the future.1
IVAR MagicKimIvar is an outstanding shelving solution. I need more sides and hope they are back in stock soon.5
Look nice, hardware leaves a lot to be desiredJessieHave to install these shelves very gently but with force if that makes any sense. The metal brackets attached to the shelves are held on with metal spikes and good intentions. If you push it down too hard or try to move the shelf the bracket will come loose and its near impossible to reattach. If you don't push hard enough it will not clip to the shelf pin. There was a 3 shelf learning curve to get it just right. Not cost effective to ship the broken shelves back so we are using them as pine boards for other projects. 2
ShelvingJaniceThis shelving is very sturdy and is a great alternative to the pre-made bookcases that are available.5
Add on PurchaseL.I have used this product before and been happy with it. Some of the earlier shelves had plastic instead of metal supports. The current shelves are much better.5
IVAR is my go to for shelvingMelissaI have Ivar shelving units in my home and at my Yoga Studio. I have been using them for many years (at least 13). They are strong, hold up well, easy to put together and change as needed. At the studio we painted them to match our decor! Such a fantastic product!!! could you please bring back the corner unit though?5
Ivar Shelf System needs instructions.CraigThe Ivar Shelf/Drawer System is affordable and after a few coats of Polyurethane is protected from stains and looks great. The only thing that is needed are instructions on how to assemble the Shelves to the Side Frames.4

Our take on wood

Wood is the material most commonly associated with IKEA furniture, and for good reasons. It’s renewable, recyclable, durable, ages beautifully and it is an important part of our Scandinavian design heritage. At IKEA, we believe that sourced in responsible way, wood is a key change driver for climate mitigation. In 2012, we set a goal that by 2020 our wood would be from more sustainable sources. We are happy to announce that we have reached this goal and today, more than 98% of the wood used for IKEA products is either FSC-certified or recycled.

Forests are critical for life on earth

Forests contribute to maintaining balance in the atmosphere, purify the air that we breathe and are part of the water cycle. They nourish wildlife biodiversity and provide homes for indigenous communities who depend on forests for their livelihoods. 90% of plant and animal species living on the planet need forests to survive. They provide sources of food, fuel, timber and many other ecosystem services that we rely upon. Sourcing approximately 19 million m3 of roundwood per year from some 50 countries, IKEA has a significant impact on the world’s forests and the timber industry and a huge responsibility to positively influence how wood is sourced. Responsible wood sourcing and forest management ensure that the needs of people dependent on forests are met, that businesses can work sustainably, that forest ecosystems are protected and biodiversity is enhanced.

100% wood from more sustainable sources

At IKEA, we work with strict industry standards to promote responsible forestry. We don’t allow any wood in our supply chain from forest areas that are illegal or contain high conservation values or from forest areas with social conflict. Before starting to work with IKEA, suppliers must demonstrate that they meet IKEA critical requirements on wood sourcing. IKEA requires all suppliers to source wood from more sustainable sources (FSC-certified or recycled wood). All suppliers are audited regularly and non-compliant suppliers are required to implement immediate corrective actions. By working together with our suppliers, we are proud to announce that we have reached our more sustainable sources goal, which we set out to achieve by 2020. Today more than 98% of the wood used for IKEA products is either FSC-certified or recycled.

IKEA Forest Positive Agenda for 2030

As pressure on the world’s forests and the surrounding eco-systems increases due to unsustainable agriculture, the expansion of infrastructure and illegal logging, it is time to take an even more holistic approach to protect and support these important resources for generations to come. The IKEA Forest Positive Agenda for 2030 set out to improve forest management, enhance biodiversity, mitigate climate change and support the rights and needs of people who depend on forests across the whole supply chain and drive innovation to use wood in even smarter ways. The agenda focuses on three key areas: • Making responsible forest management the norm across the world. • Halting deforestation and reforesting degraded landscapes. • Driving innovation to use wood in smarter ways by designing all products from the very beginning to be reused, refurbished, remanufactured, and eventually recycled.

We accomplish more by working together

For many years, IKEA has partnered with businesses, governments, social groups and non-governmental organisations to fight forest degradation and deforestation and increase the volume and availability of wood from responsibly managed forests both for our own supply chain and beyond. We are on a journey to improve global forest management and make responsible wood sourcing the industry standard, contributing to building resilient forest landscapes and improve biodiversity.

Material

What is solid wood?

Solid wood is one of our favorite materials and is part of our Scandinavian heritage. It is also a timeless material with many uses. Regardless of the tree species, it is durable, beautiful and renewable. We strive to use this raw material as smartly and efficiently as possible to avoid waste – and we also invest in facilities and logistics so that we can increase the use of recycled wood.
