PUSSY RIOT THEATRE – RIOT DAYS (RUS)

Russian feminist punk collective Pussy Riot was propelled into the global spotlight in 2012 when an unauthorised performance in a Moscow cathedral saw three of its members convicted for "hooliganism motivated by religious hatred". The group insisted that the spectacle was intended as a criticism of the Orthodox Church's support of Vladimir Putin, whom they consider a dictator, and the subsequent imprisonment and eventual release of the three women played out against an international backdrop of political and artistic furore.

Maria Alyokhina was one of the jailed Pussy Riot members, and after her stage debut in the critically acclaimed Belarus Free Theatre production Burning Doors, last year launched a new project, Pussy Riot Theatre, in collaboration with music producer Alexander Cheparukhin.

Pussy Riot Theatre's inaugural production is an adaptation of Alyokhina's own forthcoming book Riot Days, spinning her true story out into a maelstrom of aesthetic defiance in the face of an increasingly authoritarian climate. After a triumphant US tour the work will land in Melbourne with all of the visceral impact and incendiary passion that has driven Pussy Riot's expansion from unknown art collective to a force heard around the world.

"an action-packed autobiographical theatrical piece" - Daily Mail

    disapointed

    - badly structured interview - Mr. Goldman didn't seem prepared - prior to the interview was amazing (screen printing, soap box, zines and feminist library on wheels)

    Inspiring (and a little awkward)

It was fascinating to have two members of the Pussy Riot art collective talk about their experience over the past few years. The interviewer was a little awkward and did not go far off of her script. She has two punk activist icons and barely got below the surface, and therefore it would have been nice had there been more time for audience questions. Also, after two women tell their heart-wrenching stories about being beaten and their imprisonment, maybe it wasn't the best time for someone to decide that we should sing a radio host the birthday song.

    Activists without a clear agenda

by UCTAlum on 6/8/15Wilbur Theatre - Boston

Pussy Riot deserves credit for their willingness to stand up to the authoritarian rule which has become Putin's Russia. However, I was disappointed in the "conversation". Little context or background was given to describe how Russia has reached its current situation. Nor, when directly asked, what we (the people of Boston and the West at-large) could do to support the aims of Pussy Riot, was there a clear answer given. To paraphrase, the answer given was: write more comedies. By way of constructive criticism, I would suggest Pussy Riot take 30 minutes prior to their next conversation to make a couple of lists and bring these lists within them to the next event: 1. Top 5 things they want to see changed in Russia (and how realistic each of these goals are) 2. Top 5 things their audience can do to support peaceful, positive change in Russia
