The food, price and local vibe were good. The service was friendly and good value for money. There was no pressure to get anything and they were helpful when we shared our entries.

We walking around looking for a place to eat good local food. Stumbled upon this place and realized that we had eaten here on our second trip to Buenos Aires a number of years ago. We were pretty happy to find the place again. Greal...local food, popular with the locals so not a lot of English spoken (but thats part of the fun). Good food and great beer.More
Everything was great. The chicken breast was cooked so well super juicy. Empanadas were fantastic. Service was friendly.
We came here twice for dinner during our week in BA but could have easily come here more. We found this restaurant during our research for trip but I can’t remember where I read the recommendation except I did take note that their empanadas are...highly recommended and the review is absolutely correct. We tried the baked and fried empanadas and both were juicy and flavourful but I’m partial to the fried one (Sanjuanino). We ordered fernet with Coke on both visits and we had a generous pour each time 😊 On our first visit, my husband ordered a choripán. As soon as I saw modongo (tripe stew) on the menu, I looked no further. I loved loved my big bowl of tripe. The organ pieces were tender but still retained their gummy texture and the flavour of the stew base was very pleasant. My husband said his choripán had very good flavour but was a bit dry (could have used a little more grease). On our last night in BA, we wanted to go somewhere homey with hearty dishes so came here again. My husband had a milanesa and fries and I went for the steak and fries. The attached pictures say it all and I don’t think I need to put words to describe them. As a visitor, you will probably want to dine at Don Julio like everyone / every travel website suggests. However, if you aren’t able to make a reservation there, you won’t miss out much. El Sanjuanino will give you a more leisurely neighbourhood dining experience with equally good and authentic Argentine asado menu. Besides, El Sanjuanino will not burn a hole in your wallet. Some of the wait staff are more comfortable conversing in English than other but if you will be fine even if you have a very limited Spanish vocabulary. The patrons were about 50/50 locals and English-speaking expatriates.More
A simple place but delicious empanadas. We also had a very filling and equally delicious lentil soup. Good service and busy little place. Loved it.
El Sanjuanino is touted as a restaurant by and for locals, but they welcome travellers. Don't be put off by being asked to sit in the basement since it's quite comfortable! Entrees are such as you will find at many area restaurants, but portions are...HUGE! If you're smart, you'll plan to share. The grilled provoleta is delicious, as is the milanesa and the steak. They are also open for lunch. Prices all over BA are terrific now, but they are great here. I will say that their wine selection leaves something to be desired, but it was okay.More
This restaurant is very popular and when you try their food and receive the bill, you will quickly understand why. Their empanadas are famous and most people order some for a starter but all dishes our group of five tried were great, with generous portions....I can only assume that they make good money because of a quick turnover as the prices are really cheap.More
Had a light lunch here today and split one empanada and one beef tamale. Both were good, with the empanada bordering on great. The restaurant has some nice outdoor seating and a very autentico vibe, both of which we appreciated. Inexpensive and good.
Probably the best place in BA if you want to try regional food such as empanadas, tamales or other! A must if you are in town.
Empanadas both baked and fried. Ham & cheese and beef were out choices. I prefer the baked but ymmv. Wonderful service on a beautiful spring day.
Recommended by our taxi driver. We tried to go as soon as we got to our hotel as we were hungry after international flight. Had to come back at 12:00pm. Already crowded at 12:10pm. Great empanadas and great atmosphere.
We had a lovely meal here on our first night in Buenos Aires. Our waiter was so lovely and we managed to get by with our very limited Spanish. The food was simple, but hearty; they offer something for everyone. It felt like we were...experiencing a more traditional, less modern side to Buenos Aires. It was full of character and the prices were very reasonable. I would recommend.More
What a wonderful and authentic porteño experience we had at Sanjuanino Restaurant. They have an outstanding cuisine along with great and fun service. Clientele is lively. It is quite a busy place regardless of meal time. We shared an Ojo de Bife and lettuce, tomatoes...and onions, the house salad… fantastic!!! And of course for dessert, we had flan with dulce de leche and cream. This is a must visit place to have a meal, transport in time and enjoy good company.More
Great place a short walk from Recoleta Cemetery. We were hoping to get a seat outside but went into basement area and so glad we did. We sat next to some local older gents and had an unforgettable afternoon sharing stories and food. By the...way the food was good too. Empanadas, Humita and Chorizo A La Ponarola. The staff were also very friendly, happy and jovial.More
El Sanjuanino is worth a visit if you are close by, but nothing I would necessarily seek out. As usual we ordered too much food, with the most memorable dish being the Proveleta. Empanadas are fine, but have had better at plenty of other places.
