Alice in Wonderland 'Eat Me' Cookies

These Alice in Wonderland 'Eat Me' Cookies come in a variety of shapes and sizes, and each has a unique flavor. Be very careful in choosing which one to eat first, you might find yourself taking on a variety of shapes and sizes as well!

Things you'll need

Ingredients Vanilla Sable
  • ¾ cup butter
  • ¾ cup sugar
  • 2 egg yolks
  • ¼ teaspoons fine sea salt
  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
Chocolate Sable
  • 1 cup all purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup cocoa powder
  • 1/8 teaspoon baking soda
  • 10 tablespoons sugar
  • ¾ cup butter
  • ¼ teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 1 egg yolk
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla
  • 3 ounces chocolate, ice cold and grated
Equipment
  • Electric hand mixer
  • 2 large mixing bowls
  • 2 medium mixing bowls
  • Rubber spatula
  • Whisk
  • 2 cookie sheets lined with parchment paper
  • Plastic wrap
  • 10 royal icing colors in decorating bags fitted with #2 tip: white, coral, sky blue, yellow, dark purple, purple, lavender, red, fuchsia, dark brown
  • Rolling pin
  • Cutting board
  • Cookie cutters: small star, fluted round, 3-inch round
  • Sharp Knife
  • Small brush
  • Plastic wrap

Let's get started!

Vanilla Sable
  1. Preheat oven to 325ºF.
  2. In a medium mixing bowl, whisk salt and flour until well combined.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, use a hand mixer to cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in egg yolks and vanilla extract. Combine wet and dry ingredients.
  4. Form the dough into a disc and wrap in plastic. Refrigerate for an hour.
  5. Roll out dough to ¼ an inch thick and cut out circles (PICTURE at 6:02).
  6. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes.
Chocolate Sable
  1. Use a cheese grater to grate 3 ounces of a frozen chocolate bar and then freeze the grated chocolate.
  2. In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder and baking soda.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, use a hand mixer to beat butter and salt until light and fluffy. Beat in egg yolk and vanilla.
  4. Combine the flour mixture and the chocolate with the butter mixture and mix until well combined. Form the dough into a disc and wrap it in plastic. Refrigerate until completely chilled.
  5. Roll out dough to ¼ an inch thick and cut circles and stars (PICTURE at 6:15).
  6. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes.
Checkerboard
  1. Create a template by drawing a 5-inch by 15-inch rectangle onto a piece of parchment paper.
  2. Shape the vanilla dough neatly inside the rectangle and then gently flatten with a rolling pin. Wrap with parchment paper and return it to the fridge.
  3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 with chocolate sable.
  4. Remove vanilla dough and use a ruler to measure out ½-inch markers on the short sides of the rectangle (PICTURE at 4:22).
  5. Use a sharp knife and a ruler to draw a line across each half-inch mark. Use these scored lines as guides to cut the rectangle into strips (PICTURE at 4:27).
  6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 with chocolate dough. Remember to save your excess cookie dough!
  7. Use egg wash to paint the insides of each strip of dough and then glue the strips together, alternating chocolate and vanilla (PICTURE at 5:16). Wrap in parchment and freeze for 20 minutes.
  8. Cut cookie squares about ½-inch thick. Place cookies about an inch apart on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake for 12 to 15 minutes.

Time to decorate!

  1. Prepare the royal icing and scoop each color into its own piping bag fitted with a #2 tip.
  2. Pipe an outline on each cookie and allow to dry before flooding (PICTURE at 6:50).
  3. Use the various colors to pipe on the details of the cookies to make them look like the ones in the movie (PICTURE at 7:09).
