Penny is a dwarf woman from across the narrow sea.

Appearance

Penny has smooth pink cheeks, thick curly warm-brown hair, a heavy brow and a squashed nose. Her brown eyes are large and trusting.[3] Tyrion has thought of Penny as being ugly and also almost pretty - if you can forget that she's a dwarf.[4]

History

Penny and her brother Oppo are trained by their father, Hop-Bean, to mock-joust on a pig and dog to make their living.[3]

Recent Events

A Storm of Swords

While in Pentos, Penny's brother Oppo meets with a man Penny recalls as Osmund or Oswald, who hires them to entertain the guests in King's Landing during King Joffrey Baratheon's wedding to Margaery Tyrell. During their act, they ride their pig Pretty Pig and their dog Crunch while in painted wooden armor. Oppo rides the pig while dressed in grey and white with a House Stark sigil shield, and Penny rides the dog[5] while dressed in black and gold with a House Baratheon shield. The performance mocks the late Robb Stark as well as Renly and Stannis Baratheon, and Joffrey finds it hilarious. Prince Tommen Baratheon also laughs, while Queen Cersei Lannister and Lord Tywin Lannister are amused. The only ones who do not laugh are Sansa Stark, Robb's sister, and her husband Tyrion Lannister, a dwarf. Tyrion decides it is not the dwarf entertainers' fault, and plans to compliment them and pay them well, but also find out who hired them and arrange for a different kind of thanks. However, Tyrion's plans are interrupted when Joffrey dies of poison during the wedding feast, and he is arrested for the crime.[6]

After Sansa Stark escapes from King's Landing, Lord Petyr Baelish tells her that he had arranged for the comic dwarfs at the wedding, to provoke a quarrel between Tyrion Lannister and Joffrey, in order to add further false evidence against Tyrion when he would be accused of Joffrey's murder.[7]

A Dance with Dragons

Penny and Oppo travel to Volantis, where they are seen performing by Prince Quentyn Martell.[8] While at Volantis, Penny's brother is murdered by sailors who falsely believe him to be Tyrion Lannister.[5]

After Oppo's death, Penny spots Tyrion Lannister and Jorah Mormont when they visit the widow of the waterfront. Full of grief for her brother's death, she attacks Tyrion with a knife, but is restrained by Jorah. She is given a room at the inn by the widow,[5] and two days later boards the Selaesori Qhoran together with Tyrion and Jorah, which sets sail for Qarth.[3]

While aboard the ship, Penny befriends Tyrion.[3] When the ship becomes stranded for twelve days in the Gulf of Grief, the mood of the crew turns ugly, and Penny pleads with Tyrion to joust with her, to win the love of the crew. Tyrion eventually agrees, and they joust for the crew. When the ship is caught in a storm, Penny allows Tyrion to wait it out in her room. There, she kisses him, fearing that she will drown without ever having kissed a boy should the ship go down in the storm. Tyrion kindly rejects her, telling her he is still married. After the storm passes, the ship drifts for nineteen days, until they are caught by a slaver.[9]

Penny is sold together with her pig, dog, and Tyrion, at the slaver's auction held outside the walls of Meereen. They are bought by Yezzan zo Qaggaz, together with Ser Jorah, who Tyrion claims is part of their act.[10] Penny and Tyrion are made to entertain the crowds in Daznak's Pit on the day the fighting pits of Meereen are reopened. Unknown to them, the slavers intend for lions to be released after they finish their mock joust. When Queen Daenerys Targaryen learns of this plan, she orders the lions not to be released.[11]

When their master lies dying of the pale mare, Tyrion and Jorah escape to the Second Sons, taking Penny with them.[12] Although Penny, unlike Tyrion and Jorah, is not allowed to join the Second Sons, she is allowed to remain at the camp. There, she stops speaking to Tyrion for a while, saddened that they abandoned her animals in Yezzan's camp. Tyrion wonders whether she is sick with the pale mare, but does not voice his suspicions out loud, out of fear that the Second Sons will drive her off. Although Tyrion knows her animals most likely have been killed by Yezzan's men, he lies when she asks whether anyone has seen them. She goes with Tyrion to search for armor, and tells him she dreamed about jousting with Oppo. Tyrion slaps her, and reveals that her animals are dead. Penny, however, insists that they had been better off with Yezzan, leaving Tyrion to realize that Penny has been searching for a new master since her brother's death.[1]

As the Battle of Slaver's Bay is about to begin, Tyrion finds Penny in their tent, clad in the company's steel armor. She helps Tyrion put his own armor on. As Tyrion is reminiscing to her about his father during the Battle of the Green Fork she kisses him quickly, leaving him at a loss for words. Tyrion asks her if she can hear the sounds outside, and tells her they are the sounds of war, the sounds of death, frightening her. Penny insists that Tyrion is brave, but her words remind him of Shae. When the dragons appear, Tyrion departs to see what is happening outside, leaving Penny alone in the tent.[13]

Quotes about Penny

She looks so young, he thought. A girl, that's all she is. A girl, and almost pretty if you can forget that she's a dwarf. Her hair was a warm brown, thick and curly, and her eyes were large and trusting. Too trusting.[4]
