Max throws a snowball at Ruthie.
Play Audio

One morning in December,
Ruthie and I went out to play.
It snowed the night before;
School was canceled for the day.

The Snowball

Play Audio

I made three perfect snowballs,
They were big and smooth and round.
I threw the first one at a tree
It made a funny sound!

I took the second snowball,
Tossed it in the air.
When it almost hit Ruthie's head,
She said "QUIT IT OVER THERE!"

"I'm sorry," I said to Ruthie.
But she turned her head away.
So I gave her my third snowball,
Hoping she would stay.

Ruthie took the snowball
And made a sneaky smile.
"I have a cool idea," she said.
"Let's keep it for a while."

We ran inside and found a plate
To put the snowball on.
"It's 9 o'clock," said Ruthie,
"Will it melt and soon be gone?"

We played a game of hide-and-seek
And found a silver dollar.
When we came back at 10 o'clock
The snowball looked much smaller.

After that we read a book
And took Ruthie's dog for a walk.
The next time we saw our ball of snow,
It was exactly 12 o'clock.

We drew pictures until one
And climbed our favorite tree.
When we ran to see our snowball
It was no bigger than a pea!

Next we ate a snack
And practiced tying shoes.
We forgot about our snowball—
By then it was half past two.

"I'm afraid to look," cried Ruthie.
But it was just too late.
There was nothing left of our snowball,
But a puddle on a plate.

So now we have no snowball.
It's gone, to our great sorrow.
Perhaps we'll make another
And let it melt again tomorrow!
