Why We Like The Fjallraven Expedition Down Lite Jacket

Simply a lighter version of Fjallraven’s classic down-filled design, the Men’s Expedition Down Lite Jacket is best for milder winter climates. Naturally insulating goose down has been strategically distributed in large baffles to help the feathers loft and trap in body heat. The outer nylon fabric bears a water-resistance treatment for when you do get trapped in an unexpected hail storm or light snowfall. Hem and cuff adjustments allow you to bundle up tight when the wind starts to blow, or the sun goes down. And the rest of the jacket’s features, like the protective hood, two large hand pockets, and longer cut, keep in tune with the heftier version’s no-frill design.

Really warm but not for daily use

Now 2 months in my possession. Without any doubt a really warm jacket. But be aware: it’s rather bulky and not a slim fit jacket. If you are looking for a really warm jacket, it’s your choice; if you are looking for a warm jacket for daily use, you better make another choice..

An impressive jacket for the extreme cold

I recently bought this jacket in response to the upcoming cold snap in Edmonton and it performs extremely well! For reference, the temperatures during the cold snap can range from -30 to -45 degrees Celsius and this jacket kept me warm through all of it (with a few layers, of course). Definitely recommend it to those who want an extremely warm, light, and durable jacket!

Complete Winter Immunity

I've owned warm winter coats before, but nothing comes close to this marshmallow of a jacket. I tend to run pretty cold and the 415g of down has kept me toasty and smiling during frigid winter days and sub-zero midnight astrophotography shoots. The bulk is absolutely worth the comfort, and I appreciate the large zipper pulls and snaps that make it easy to operate with mittens on. I can't even imagine how much warmer the big brother to this jacket is (Expedition Down Jacket - 680g fill weight). For size reference, I am 6 ft. 4 in. 190lbs. and the size Large fits me perfectly - just enough room to layer while still not inhibiting movement.

This is my first Fj°llr°ven coat and subject to a number of drawbacks, I have to say it?s a really nice jacket. A bit heavy (2.75 lbs) but still less than comparable coats by other manufacturers and still light enough and non-bulky enough to hike in.. The workmanship is superb and the coat looks great, fits almost perfectly (a bit baggy in the torso, easily rectified by layering), and is fairly (but not super) warm with 15 oz of 700 fill power down (M). The coat?s rugged fabric feels like it should be waterproof but it?s only water resistant. The hood fits very snugly except that there?s an opening at the neck and collar which lets cold air in. However, cinching the hood draw strings tight makes for almost an airtight sealed hood around your head, leaving only a small portion of your face exposed, a very nice design for sure. A neck gaiter would also address this issue. The pockets are adequate, nothing special. Some cons: the snap buttons that lock the zipper flap in place, tighten the cuffs very snugly around your wrists, and hold the pocket flaps down, can be hard to operate; the zipper, although substantially-sized, is fairly hard to engage; the retro-style hem and hood cinch strings dangling down are not particularly attractive (although the hood strings can be hidden inside the collar). The coat?s 15 oz of down is substantial but since it?s only 700 fp, there?s a limit to how much cold (absent layering) this coat will protect against. Compared to some comparable coats, the warmth of this jacket is not at the top. However, on balance, this is a meticulously-crafted jacket with a cool retro look that should last a long time and keep you reasonably warm in harsh conditions. Any coat the heavier predecessor of which was conceived in a snow cave bivy in bitterly cold Northern Sweden in the early 1970s has got to be a great coat! Recommended for sure.

Excellent - very cozy

A reliable, comfortable, and warm down jacket. I use this down jacket in Arctic tundra settings around Baffin Island, and find it best for warmth with low exertion activities (i.e. life around tent and cabin, as an emergency layer on expedition travel, or for everyday errands around town). At 6'5" and 260lbs, I found XXL a perfect fit, with lots of room for layering and loft to spare. Recommended.

Great but big

Excellent coat, very warm as you would expect. I am 6 ft (183cm) and 80kg and take a medium in pretty much everything, but the medium in this coat completely swamped me and was far too big. I exchanged for a small (I would not normally wear small in anything!) which is a much better fit.

Like a Canada Goose but better

I froze this winter in Park City, UT especially when the temp was hovering around zero. This parka changed that all. It is big and bulky but does not feel like that at all, it sits and wears no bigger than a standard puffy down coat. The fact that it is basically two down coats sewn together creates an air pocket in between them that will keep you warm in the coldest of temperatures. Another plus is that it is available in a heavier version for colder climates and it is about half the cost of a bougie Canada Goose, so save some money, stay warm, and look good in this bad boy.

Super warm, super cool

I live in Chicago and this jacket is Polar Vortex proof! It's incredibly warm. I typically get cold very easily and find myself layering with every jacket I own until I picked up THIS beast. I now often wear just a shirt under the jacket or a light layering piece when the temps drop to single digits. Buying items insulated with goose down is also out of my norm because I intend on spending considerable amount of time outdoors and I worry about the fill getting wet but Fjallraven ingeniously designed the jacket with synthetic fill reinforcements at the shoulders so it keeps me warm when I'm caught in a wet snow. It's also super stylish and I get a lot of compliments, win-win.
