Active Ingredients

Repellent Active Ingredients

Although using any repellent is most important, choosing the right active ingredient for your individual needs can make repelling bugs a painless process. Consider the length of time you’ll be outside

and the type of activity you’re planning.

  • Deet has been used in the U.S. for more than 50 years and continues to be an effective option for consumers. DEET-based products are recommended for those who plan to spend longer periods of time outdoors in more heavily infested conditions.
  • Picaridin (pronounced “pick-CARE-a-den”) became available in the U.S. in 2005. Clean, odorless and effective, this active ingredient provides the long-lasting, effective protection consumers have come to expect from DEET in a formula with a light, clean feel.
  • Oil of lemon eucalyptus is the only plant-based active ingredient recommended by the CDC. Derived from oil obtained from the leaves of the Eucalyptus citriodora tree, this active ingredient repels mosquitoes and deer ticks for up to six hours.

Mosquito

Zika virus outbreaks have been detected in Africa and southeast Asia for decades – but only in recent years have scientists detected transmission elsewhere. The virus causes mild, flu-like symptoms – like low-grade fever, rash, fatigue and muscle pain – that last about a week, but can cause a birth defect called microcephaly and other severe fetal brain defects.

West Nile virus is the most commonly reported mosquito-borne disease in the United States. Although only one in five people who contract the virus develop symptoms such as fever, headache, body aches or vomiting, the virus can cause serious neurological illnesses that can be fatal, such as encephalitis or meningitis.

Dengue fever is primarily thought to be a tropical disease, but occasional cases have been detected in southern states, including Texas and Florida, in recent years. Symptoms include high fever, severe headache behind the eyes, rash and muscle pain.

This is on me for not looking more closely when purchasing, but I thought I'd share a photo in case it helps someone else. I have used REPEL before, and I'm sure it works adequately, but for those who are needing the individually wrapped packets for your purse or backpack, I'd recommend looking elsewhere.

I live in the South and have always been eaten alive by mosquitos and fleas. Their bites leave large welts and last for days. I have 2 large, highly active dogs that require I take them outside multiple times a day to chase balls and/or frisbees. This is the best repellent on the market for me. I use (and can reuse) these wipes every day from my face down to my feet. If I forget to put the wipe back in the resealable package I have found that I can sprinkle a little water on it and still wipe small areas of exposed skin effectively. I had an unopened package from last year and they were still moist and effective enough to start off this summer with. I can keep these flat packages in a kitchen drawer, pocket or purse. The scent is mild and not unpleasant, even my grandchildren use these wipes without complaint! Who could ask for anything more?

These repellant wipes work amazingly well. My husband gets bombarded by mosquitoes when he's outside and they leave huge, horrible bumps that are extremely itchy. He has tried many sprays but nothing has worked as well as these wipes.

Glad I found these! We rubbed them on exposed areas not covered by clothing and shoes to keep the mosquitos and no-see-ums away. In addition to being very effective repelling bugs, they were perfect for airplane travel. We flew to Florida to do a week-long backpacking camping trip in the Florida Keys. We traveled with backpacks as our only luggage and the backpacks were our carry-ons. Because the wipes are not considered "liquid" by TSA, i was able to pack several packages in my carry-on without having them take up room in my liquids bag. The packages are flat and fit easily into side pockets for quick access. They are also lightweight, and did not weigh down our backpacks. Great for camping, hiking, picnics, and other outdoor activities.

These wipes are the real deal. Living and camping in Florida means bugs, lots of bugs. These wipes deter mosquitoes, ticks, and chiggers. They’re stronger than Off spray (which has 20% deet). Keep in mind, the wipes leave an oily residue (assuming b/c they’re 30% deet), but not a deal breaker….just have to plan accordingly.

These work great and are my go to for travel. Took these on a trip to South Africa and didn’t have a single bug bite.

I just came back from a week in the lowlands of Bolivia. On the first afternoon there, I hadn't applied any repellent, since I was coming from the airport, and mosquitoes descended in a hungry cloud on my friend and me. Twenty minutes later, we leave our rooms after having used these wipes, and not a single mosquito bothered either of us. Several days later, there was a city of ants crawling in my room under the door. I took a used wipe and drew a semicircle on the floor around the threshold, and nothing crossed it all night. This really does repel insects of multiple types!

I apparently have a body chemistry that attracts mosquitoes. I can be around multiple other people who are unbothered and leave with a dozen bites. Not with these wipes, though.

I don't use lotions or body creams because I don't like the greasy feel they can leave, so I was dreading having to use the wipes, but they really aren't unpleasant at all. Yes, there is a *slight* greasy residue, but that soaks in after about 20-30 minutes. Yes, there is a *very* slight smell, but it's not unpleasant and that seems to fade quickly, too.

I wish I had discovered these years ago. They would have made so many trips so much more comfortable.

First, really like the product. Short bad part, I for some reason thought they were small individual wipes in their own container. It is one container with wipes and that container/bag is resealable.
Super easy to apply and really great for applying to sensitive areas near eyes, ears and things like that. One wipe was plenty for us for hiking (in Canada!) Great product. Would definitely use again.

We purchased these for a recent trip to Argentina where dengue and mosquitos are an issue. We had read that there was a scarcity of big spray and since we couldn't pack any, we thought these would be a great option to just throw in you bag, since you can pack them. They worked great, but stupidly didn't think about the fact that you have to apply them with your hand so once it's done, your hand stays smelling of the repellant. I ended up applying them to everyone so that only one of us had a smelly hand but had to either find a place to wash my hands or remember not to rub my eyes. Just keep that in mind. Otherwise a good alternative.
