New Orleans’s French Quarter: Let the Good Times Roll

"Stop thinking of New Orleans as the worst-organized city in the United States," writes author Dan Baum in Nine Lives, his post-Katrina book. "Start thinking of it as the best-organized city in the Caribbean." Some folks think there is something distinctly foreign about New Orleans, a place where people’s priorities seem inclined toward enjoying life and relishing the moment at hand. Nothing says it better than the town’s unofficial Cajun creed: “Laissez les bons temps rouler,” or "Let the good times roll."

Historical buildings with intricate wrought-iron balconies line the narrow streets of New Orleans’s French Quarter. Here, street musicians often fill the air with jazz music, their trombones and tubas swinging back and forth. Just off the Jackson Square park and near the towering St. Louis Cathedral, the legendary Café Du Monde serves beignets under heaping piles of powdered sugar. The nearby Frenchmen Street, just north of the Quarter, provides a slightly less touristy taste of New Orleans nightlife. Some of the city’s most popular live jazz and blues bars dominate this historic two-block district, with each venue hosting world-class musicians nearly every night of the week. And then there's Bourbon Street, where neon lights advertise frozen cocktails and crowds gather along 13 city blocks.

I asked for a room with a view but the window was so tiny you could barely fit a flower pot in it. Other than that the room was great

Great Hotel in the French Quarter Perfect location in the French Quarter. The hotel staff were very accommodating, especially Byron. The beds are outstanding and comfortable. The Astor Crowne Plaza is my first choice when I visit New Orleans. Great restaurants within walking distance. Great job!

Nico made me feel at home! Nico was an absolute wonderful host! We so enjoyed our cocktail hour in the Executive Lounge on the 4th floor IHG Suite Can’t wait to come back again soon! We visited the WORLD WAR II Museum and was so proud of that magnificent place! Riding the trolly was so easy…cannot stop telling everyone about the great food that we enjoyed in New Orleans! Never disappoints!

The kind of seedy rooms you'd expect to find on a random stretch of I-40 This was probably the worst hotel experience in my life. As someone who previously lived in New Orleans and has friends who've held management positions there, I know they stint to which this hotel has gone in both quality and service. From obvious carpet stains that looked like dried vomit and watered down shower gel, to TWO non-working safes and antiquated CD alarm clock that hasn't been manufactured since the early 2000s, my room was on par with the kind of place that rents rooms by th hour. Speaking of renting rooms by the hour, the long hairs I found between the sheets and half-stocked bathroom towels suggest that my room may have been occupied for a "brief stay" that housekeeping didn't feel warranted a cleaning and restocking. Of course, my repeated room service requests went unanswered. For the four nights I stayed there, no one changed my bed linens, which was only exacerbated by the fact that the pillows only had pillow protectors and no pillowcases and there were long hairs on the sheets. When I complained to the front desk, the night manager snapped at me and claimed that they only change bed linens on the third night of your stay. As someone with chronic allergies, I was constantly sneezing and eventually had to go to CVS across the street and pick up some allergy medicine. Unfortunately, I was unable to get another hotel room, so I wound up sleeping on coat on top of the bedsheets. The only other time I have stayed in a hotel this bad was when I returned to New Orleans after Katrina to meet with my insurance adjuster and the only room I could get was in a motel near a truck stop outside of Jackson that rented rooms by the hour. In all fairness, the Crown Plaza only beats that place because it's in a better location.
