The WWE, short for World Wrestling Entertainment, is a staple sports program in the United States and beyond. Since its debut in 1952 as Capitol Wrestling Corporation, WWE has become the world’s premier professional wrestling league. Combining sheer athleticism with outrageous entertainment, WWE offers fans an experience unlike any other. Many superstar wrestlers made a name for themselves in the WWE ring, including Hulk Hogan, Andre the Giant, The Rock, and Rowdy Roddy Piper, leading to much success for the brand. With its live events, products and fan engagement, the WWE creates an air of nostalgia for long-time fans and generates new fans among children because of its family-friendly environment. SmackDown is one of its longest-running recurring events. Since its debut in 1999, SmackDown has been broadcast in over 1,000 episodes from a total of 162 different arenas across the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Iraq, Japan, Italy and Mexico. Before the brand became known as the WWE, it was known as the WWF, an acronym for the World Wrestling Federation. The name change officially came in 2002 after WWF owner Vince McMahon purchased World Championship Wrestling for a whopping $4.2 million. Business mogul McMahon had originally purchased the WWF brand from his father in 1982 and set out on a mission to make the brand a world-recognized phenomenon. McMahon created a wrestling empire for the WWE, which continues to dominate the field of wrestling entertainment.
For SmackDown’s primetime television debut in 1999, superstars Kane, the Undertaker, Chyna, Triple H, The Rock and Chris Jericho were all introduced to the public via television screens across the nation. Later that year, Arnold Schwarzenegger became the first of many celebrities to appear on SmackDown, unleashing harsh commentary on Triple H and earning himself a spot in the WWE Hall of Fame as a celebrity guest. Fans were pleasantly surprised in March 2018 when world champion Daniel Bryan returned to the ring after fighting injuries for three years on the sidelines.
WWE puts on a total of roughly 320 events per year, which are aired in 150 countries. SmackDown is currently in its 20th season of events and has become one of the most popular shows within the brand. Early on, WWE wrestling matches were structured and serious. These eventually evolved into matches involving more wild entertainment, weaving various actors, special effects and story lines into each event. In order to offer even more entertainment to consumers, the WWE brand now includes reality shows, merchandise, songs, videos and more.
