John Woo options Metroid movie

Director John Woo confirms that he has optioned the movie rights to Nintendo's popular Metroid series.

According to a recent Reuters report, director John Woo has optioned the movie rights to Nintendo's popular Metroid series. Details on the movie are scarce at present, but it's believed that the storyline will focus on Samus Aran's origins, as well as her subsequent battles with the Metroids and Mother Brain.

"We are very fortunate that there is such an extensive amount of material to draw upon for the film, due to there being so many iterations of the game over the years," said Woo.

The movie rights for the Metroid series were originally optioned by producers Warren Zide and Craig Perry in January of last year but were allowed to expire. Woo's game studio, Tiger Hill Games, stepped in to option the rights from Nintendo when they became available again.

"We have to assume the mainstream audience is unfamiliar with the property," said producer Brad Foxhoven. "As for the rest of the film, we will stay true to the game and [will] have Samus battling the Metroids and Mother Brain in a fight for control of the galaxy."

We'll bring you more information on Woo's Metroid movie plans as soon as it becomes available.

I Can't wait to see how well this "GAME to MOVIE" conversion will be when it releases...I AM A HUGE FAN OF METROID GAMES...the metroid games have lots of science-fiction elements which includes strange outer worlds atmosphere, great soundtracks and suspense to make a great film...

Hate to burst peoples bubble, but this news is already 2 years old. No news of it has come out in those 2 years, so I doubt it's still on.

Kiera Knightly IS Samus, she's got the look in my opinion. Uma is kind of ugly.

I hope it turns out good... I don't want to see a movie like Resident Evil. (Oh yes, I like the series, just not the movies)

Why?! Why would you desecrate a solemn character like Samus? What would you have her say? "Time to rid of some 'roids"
    Enough already!

    Tarantino did Kill Bill.

Woo is big on HK gangster flicks. They're all superb, and he's a wonderful director.

Well, to add to my last comment, if Woo was the guy who did Kill Bill, the acting in that really stunk, i hope this movie isn't like that...see, that's what i was wondering about, the acting and directing.

Dude, I bet you this is going to be one of those movies where only, like, nine people go to see it or something, but I might be one of those nine...don't get me wrong ,I like Metroid, or I wouldn't be on this page! It might or might not be good. And yes, I DO like to spell correctly.

Woo optioned the movie, which means next to nothing beyond that his company has the right to make it if it wants to. There's no sign of any actual production as far as I can tell.

Now I'm replying to myself. Time to take a break.

Is there any more news on this? IMdB has an entry for 'Metroid (2006)' but there's nothing in it…

Ah sure hope it will be a good movie. We all know what happens when a superhero or a game comes to the silver screen... (thinking of Fantastic 4 and DOOM, here)

Same here I only heard about it from the rumors page.

When this game was on the SNES I thought then it should be a movie, took them long enough.
