This is my 2nd S1 Pro speaker. I'd been researching online for a while before deciding to buy the first one a couple of years ago. This one I just bought makes it a complete pair of speakers that deliver stereo sound for my karaoke system at home. Great sound from a compact, mobile speaker!

There is a lot to like about the Bose S1 Pro from its lightweight 13.5 lb adaptable form-factor, durable construction, and its built-in 3-channel mixer. This specific version does not include the rechargeable lithium-ion battery pack, reducing the upfront cost and weight of the speaker, but limits you to spaces where you can plug the speaker into an outlet 6 feet away to use it. A battery can be purchased separately or you can opt for the bundled version for on-the-go use. Thankfully, a battery is trivial to install in the bottom of the speaker beneath a panel attached with two easy-to-remove screws, if you decide you need this feature, and I like that this design allows you to easily replace the battery, if needed. There’s a chunky handle inlaid on the top of the speaker so that it sits flush with the body, allowing you to carry and move it around easily.
This speaker can be used in a number of orientations including upright, horizontal, tilted back, and stand mounted (35mm), each providing a different sound profile that automatically adjusts EQ to achieve optimal projection. There are rubber non-slip pads on all the surfaces that you can use when the unit is freestanding. While it seems a small bother, the logo on the front of the speaker can be rotated 360° in 90° intervals (counter-clockwise only) in order to match the orientation of the speaker as well.
This speaker has 3 input channels, 2 XLR and one 3.5mm AUX/Bluetooth combo channel. The two XLR inputs also accept ¼” jack inputs and can be used with any powered input device, like a microphone, mixer, looper, or instrument, for example a guitar or keyboard, but neither channel offers phantom power so would not be suitable for condenser microphones that require it. There are individual volume controls for each channel, though only the XLR channels have EQ adjustment dials: treble, bass, and reverb. Additionally, you can enable ToneMatch for mic or guitar input, which applies additional presets accordingly like a low-cut filter. Setting ToneMatch to ‘off’ is equivalent to line level input.
The PA system can pair with a Bluetooth audio source by pressing the Bluetooth button for several seconds to enter pairing mode. Note that if AUX input is used, Bluetooth input will be overridden even if a Bluetooth source is paired with the speaker and transmitting audio. When paired with a phone, you can receive notification sounds through the speaker, but if you receive a phone call, ringing and call audio will not be played through the speaker. With my Android phone, I had to download the Bose Connect app in order to pair to the S1 Pro, though I was able to directly pair an iPhone to the speaker without the app.
The Bose Connect app does offer more functionality for you to manage the speaker’s settings like paired Bluetooth devices, enable ‘Party Mode’ to sync audio output to other Bose SoundLink Bluetooth speakers for multi-speaker playback, toggle on/off ‘auto-off’ (to save battery power), and check remaining battery life (if installed). If you do have a second speaker paired in Party Mode, you can subsequently switch to ‘Stereo’ mode for left and right track separation on each speaker rather than playing the same audio in unison. You can also daisy chain a second S1 Pro with a ¼” TRS cable using the Line Out port, however, it is not possible to achieve true stereo output with this method.
In terms of audio quality, the sound is very good. While mono only, it’s clean and balanced with a decent amount of bass reproduction; however, I felt channel 3 lacked a little bit of treble depth both over Bluetooth and via AUX input, and unfortunately it’s the only channel that doesn’t allow for onboard EQ adjustments, so you’ll need to set the EQ from the source device when possible. The other thing to keep in mind is that at high volumes, it is possible to experience some clipping and distortion, and the LED next to each channel’s volume dial will display red when the input signal exceeds the limiters, indicating the volume should be reduced in order to protect the speaker from damage and improve sound quality.
Performance of my dynamic microphone with the S1 Pro was awesome. The audio is clear and very crisp, but keep in mind the ToneMatch Mic mode is optimized for close usage with your mouth nearly touching the mic. The reverb controls are also nice for creating a sense of space and dimension without muddying the sound too much, depending on the experience you’re going for. The PA system is perfect for both solo and duo singers/musicians. We love using it for karaoke since we can have two mics attached for duet numbers and the music input on channel 3.
The one thing I don't recommend the speaker for is pairing over Bluetooth with a video source, for example to watch video on a mobile device or stream audio from a movie projector because there is a miniscule but noticeable (to me) amount of lag/delay between the audio and the image on the screen when used this way. It's just not designed to be used as a soundbar. Overall, the Bose S1 Pro is a powerful, compact speaker with great sounding audio designed for PA system use. It has a few onboard essential EQ controls and 3 flexible input channels which are expandable, so whether you are a professional musician, performer, or a casual home user, you can start small or incorporate it into a larger setup to fit your needs.

Versatile and powerful speaker that does it all

Verdict. It is a small speaker with a big sound and powerful bass. With a Bluetooth input and two combined XLR inputs (with adjustable reverb, gain, bass, and treble), this speaker is versatile enough to use as a PA system, instrument speaker, music playback speaker, or all of these at the same time! The optional rechargeable battery allows for music and playing guitar for up to 11 hours without access to power.
First impressions. I expected the Bose S1 to be bigger. The fact that it’s a smaller speaker with a big sound and tons of versatile features makes it even better as a portable solution for most sound needs. The speaker build definitely conveys quality and ruggedness. The handle at the top is very convenient, and the shape of the speaker allows for multiple speaker positions to fit your needs.
Setup. The Bluetooth setup was very easy: hold the Bluetooth button for two seconds, and then connect through your smartphone Bluetooth settings. You can also connect through the Bose Connect app. The two XLR inputs work as expected; no setup required.
Sound. The speaker is quite capable for its size. It’s certainly loud enough for our needs. The lows are fantastic, and mids and highs are very nice. Of note, playing music from the Bluetooth channel has been a mixed experience, depending on genre. It would have been really nice to have physical adjustments for Bass, mid, and treble to maximize the sound quality of this speaker for simple Bluetooth music playback, or when using the third channel for a base track to play and sing over. Chanel 1 and 2, which also include “Tone Match,” are fantastic. I tested the speaker with a nice acoustic-electric guitar and a decent condenser mic, and the sound was excellent, with sufficient adjustments options to dial-in a quality experience. I love this speaker as the perfect acoustic-electric guitar companion. Throw-in a microphone and you can jam anywhere, with a crisp and clean sound.
Things I love:
- Small size but powerful sound
- Excellent overall sound, with great lows
- Versatile and capable with two combo XLR inputs and one Bluetooth / AUX input
- Rugged build, and convenient handle at the top
- The speaker has a whole for mounting on PA speaker stands
- Optional rechargeable battery, so you can play music and instruments (like an acoustic-electric guitar) without any power
Things I don’t love:
- I wish channel 3 had physical adjustments for bass, mids, and treble.
- Master volume would be great so that you raise or lower overall volume without impacting the mixer setup between the three channels.
- A longer power cord would have been great
- The Bose Connect app adds a few more features, but it could do more. In this case, the app could have provided a software solution to the lack of physical adjustments on Channel 3
Conclusion. The Bose S1 provides a powerful portable solution for music playback, instrument-playing, singing, and PA. I am very impressed with this speaker, all of its capabilities, and its price point. It is not quite perfect, but it’s pretty close! I highly recommend this speaker.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, events are becoming smaller and more intimate which means that bulky equipment is often no longer necessary. Bose has always been known for producing high quality sound from small devices and the S1 Pro is no exception. Though it is quite small (13" H x 9.5" W x 11.2" D) it produces powerful audio that is crisp and vibrant (even at impressively high volume).
The speaker is easy to carry thanks to the built-in handle and at 15lbs it is easy to transport or take on the go. The S1 Pro is primarily plastic though the build quality still feels top notch. Unfortunately, there is no IPX rating for dust, water, or impact resistance making it best suited for the indoors (or dry conditions). The field of sound that is produced is slightly narrow, so it doesn’t impress quite as much in large open spaces. For any event larger than 50 people, you will want at least two speakers and for outdoor events - additional speakers are an absolute must. (...And, of course, two speakers are needed for true stereo sound.)
There are 3 audio input ports - although sadly an RCA input is not included. Instead, there are two ¼" / XLR inputs as well as an Aux Input (which is either Bluetooth or a 3.5mm jack). Each source has Reverb, Bass, and Treble controls as well as a light to show input level - making it easy to adjust on the fly without reaching for the wrong knob.
What I find most impressive about the S1 Pro is that Bose has taken time to perfect all of the small details. The speaker can be set up in 3 positions each with a specific purpose in mind, the knobs are rubberized, the handle makes it easy to carry, and even the logo can be rotated so that it is always right-side-up even when the speaker is on its side. The speaker is small enough to mount on a wall, or mounted on a speaker stand via the 35mm pole cup.
I believe that the Bose S1 Pro is especially well suited for home musicians, singers, and for professional vocal amplification / presentations. If the rechargeable battery is added (which costs an extra $99) the speaker becomes even more useful as it has superior sound for its small size. Bose has truly hit a home run by making the S1 Pro perfect for nearly any use. Plug in a mic and your guitar and jam, or use it to party! It's perfect either way!
Cons:
No IPX rating for dust, water, or impact resistance
No RCA input
No EQ customization either on the speaker or within the App
Bluetooth connection requires a mobile app
Rechargeable battery is sold separately
Battery compartment cannot be opened without a screwdriver
Does not include a cover (instead the S1 Pro Slip Cover is sold separately)
Narrow Sound Projection

Great sound overall, I got this for home music playing but also for use as a small stage monitor when I perform with certain bands. I was introduced to these on a gig actually and was blown away by it’s powerful sound from such a small package. I do wish the Bluetooth input channel had EQ controls on it. My only criticism….And found a speaker stand for it on Amazon for just $18 on Prime day!!

Hosting raging parties, practicing my karaoke, or rocking out with my guitar has never sounded better, and louder, thanks to the new Bose S1 Pro floor monitor speaker designed for just that. Well, it may be a stretch about the raging parties due to the pandemic and me getting too old for that but it’s still an incredible speaker. In any case, this thing was designed just for us audiophiles who love loud, clear, crisp sound even if you’re not entertaining.
Out of the box, the S1 was very easy to set up; simply plug it in with the included power cord, download and set up the speaker in the Bose+ app and you’re ready to rock out… or listen to smooth jazz via a Bluetooth connection and your smart device, plug in that acoustic guitar and a microphone for you entertainers, or basically this thing can handle whatever you throw at it. Having been a loyal and repeat customer of anything Bose, it is a simple set up and easy app to control even for those new to their products. I would like to see more options like syncing streaming services and EQ settings in the app similar to the Bose Music app but clearly that’s not what this speaker was designed for. The app does give you the option for Party Mode which you can connect multiple other compatible speakers to.
On the speaker itself, which has a convenient handle on top and was surprisingly lighter than other PA monitor speakers I have used in the past, you will find two combo-XLR inputs to connect your instrument and/or microphone. For those musician/singers, Bose uses dedicated ToneMatch processing and Auto EQ to ensure you and the speaker sound the best. There are gains for each of these inputs which let you adjust the reverb, bass, treble and volume. There is a smaller 3.5mm auxiliary input for any other audio devices such as smart phones or MP3 players with a headphone jack which also has a volume control. There is a dedicated line out to connect to other systems. The S1 has built in sensors that know how you have the speaker set up, whether straight up, on its side, elevated or tilted to ensure sound is being distributed appropriately. For those that would like to listen to music or perform where there may not be a power source, Bose added a rechargeable battery option to allow portability.
The Bose S1 Pro monitor speaker is a great option from one of the best names in the business. Offered at a reasonable price considering the specs, options and sound this speaker creates you won’t be disappointed.
