About

FUJIYA & MIYAGI IN CONCERT:

British trio Fujiya & Miyagi have always been more concerned with the quality of their sound than with the meaning behind it. Take, for instance, the band's moniker -- at face value, you'd probably expect them to be a Japanese duo, but the trio has said they simply picked the name because they liked how it sounded. Their focus on sonic detail carries over into their soaring electro-pop tunes, which layer lead singer David Best's whisper-like vocals over entrancing, experimental sounds. The result is a catalog of synth-heavy jams that, when performed live, emphasize the band's finely-tuned craft over showmanship. Fujiya & Miyagi's recent gigs have been heavy on tunes from their dance-centric 2014 album Artificial Sweetness, giving concertgoers a unique sensory experience that puts strong, rattle-to-your-bones grooves front and center.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Founded in 2000 in Brighton, England by keyboardist and programmer Steve Lewis (Fujiya) and guitarist and vocalist David Best (Miyagi), Fujiya & Miyagi have dazzled electro pop fans with their unique blend of brooding lyrics and slick sounds. The duo released their first album, Electro Karaoke in the Negative Style, in 2003, before recruiting bassist Matt Hainsby in 2005 to round out their sound. Their first album as a trio, 2006's Transparent Things, earned them critical success, landing on several year-end lists including Pitchfork's Top 50 Albums of 2006. For 2011's Ventriloquizzing the trio delved into darker trenches, as Best channeled his inner thespian to deliver haunting, moody vocals. With their latest studio success, 2014's Artificial Sweetness, Fujiya & Miyagi have unearthed their knack for dancey tunes, treating fans to a delicious blend of clever wordplay and zappy grooves. The album is a sweet sensation in itself, only made better by the ecstasy of their live performances.

Aimes was AAAAWWWEEESSSOMMMMEEE. The second act, Dinowalrus made me uncomfortable, so I left. The third was quirky fun, ego-driven hipsters with quite the cult following of men. But Fujiya & MIyagi was by far the most professional, rocking, funky, amazing act of all. I'm a fan of their music, and was blown away by their live show. I have to admit, I had my doubts at them being fun live with their low key music, but they really kept the audience dancing the whole time. They didn't pause long between songs. The sound was impeccable. And the energy was HIGH. Love them.
